Confessions of a Comcast customer service rep: ‘I don’t personally care.’

Comcast’s customer service has been having a rough time lately. What’s it like on your end when cringe-worthy calls go viral?
We want to keep customers, but if someone says they want to leave, I don’t personally care. The one call that went viral [last summer], I don’t even know how that would happen; that’s just not how the conversation goes down when a customer wants to cancel. You try to offer them a good deal, but you don’t try to force them to stay.

People need to understand, you’re getting beat up all day, everyday. You have to stay on the phones, you definitely can’t hang up. And a lot of times people are screaming at us when we have no control over what’s happening. You can’t blame us.

Do you feel motivated to do a good job?
Not always. There are people there who care about following up with customers, and I do too. But if you’re an asshole to me, I don’t care. If you’re degrading me and being awful to me, why would I want to go above and beyond to help you? We have sales goals and incentives, and I try, but I don’t know if I’ll be there long enough to get promoted anyway.

What are your sales incentives?
A lot of times it’s an hour or two off the phone during work. We’re grown-ups, but it feels like we’re being treated like children. Sometimes we’ll get candy or have raffles. I won something small once but then had to pay taxes on it anyway. That got taken out of my paycheck.

How involved is upper management in your day-to-day?
If you need help with something during a call – there are certain actions that a manager has to approve – you have to put the customer on hold, and sometimes it takes a while. You get stuck and you have no other option but to put people on hold if you’re waiting on a supervisor. The supervisors don’t want to take the calls either. If a customer is asking for a supervisor on the phone, 99 percent of the time, they’re just talking to another customer service rep who’s pretending to be a supervisor. It’s because the customer doesn’t actually need to talk to management; they’re just yelling at you and demanding to speak to someone above you. You also rarely speak with your supervisor directly – it’s all through an office chat and email. I only see them and talk to them in person once a week to review my calls. It’s very impersonal.

What do you wish Comcast customers knew about your job?
I’d tell them to just recognize that we are people on the other line. We’re doing all that we can; anyone who’s calling in, I never want to do them wrong. I want to help them. I don’t want their TV to be broken. I want to fix it, and I’m never trying to make their lives harder, but a lot of times it’s out of our hands. We’re just people trying to do our jobs. But people will scream at you, then say, “I know it’s not your fault, but…” and then continue to scream at you. Just remember we’re people working crazy schedules – it’s a 24/7 call center that closes for nothing. I might be on the phone with you holding in pee because I need to go to the bathroom and you won’t stop yelling at me. Again, it feels like I’m back in school and it’s very strict – they use a lot of scare tactics, and you’re just so afraid all the time that you’re going to get in trouble for something.

Scare tactics?
Basically to make you think that you’re going to get fired. You can’t have your cell phone out; you can’t go on the Internet if it’s not Comcast-related. They monitor your computer screen constantly. If you don’t meet your sales, you get fired. They record every call, and they really do listen to them. If you’re mean to someone on the phone, you can’t get away with it. Comcast customer service has such a bad reputation, but you will get caught if you pull anything on the phone with a customer. Even someone I know who has worked there for years is still afraid. It’s not laid back whatsoever.

How’s the office culture?
You really can’t talk to anyone that much. Sometimes, very few times, there will be breaks between calls and you can talk to your desk buddy, but you’re not supposed to. They don’t encourage you to be social. You can exchange looks with people across from you if you’re both dealing with someone awful. You’re just in agreement like, “this sucks.” But it’s not a very social environment.

There are also a lot of age differences, but we’re all working in the same role, which is a little bit weird. You do have benefits: After three months, you can get health insurance, 401K, or they’ll pay for part of your school. Everyone gets free cable, too, which is nice. But I’m embarrassed of the job itself. I do everything I can to not tell people what I do. I don’t think everyone else there feels that way, though.

Have you ever had an out-of-the-ordinary, positive experience with a customer?
A woman called in and she needed to have her box reset and pay her bill. We got to talking and she was telling me that she was single with a newborn and just having a hard time all around. Some people will tell you a lot of personal things. Normally, there’s a surcharge for people who pay their bill over the phone, but since we were talking and she was a good customer, I waived the fee. It was just a courtesy gesture, but she was so thankful for the extra money, she got emotional over the phone and eventually we were both crying on the phone together.

I felt really good after that. You’re helping people, in a small way, but you’re doing something. It seems silly, but people are really serious about their cable.


How to Negotiate a Lower Comcast Xfinity Bill

Comcast, or “Xfinity” as they like to call themselves these days, had thrown me for a bit of a loop lately. The live-chat method had always worked for me in getting discounts and promotions on Comcast services, but lately they’ve been sticklers.

I had written a very old post on Get Rich Slowly in the past that highlighted how to cut your Comcast bill – and gave the actual chat transcript that cut my cost by 33%. That post is outdated, as nobody has had much luck with their live chat team in recent years. Maybe Comcast management read that post and decided to “toughen up” the live chat team?

Sure, I could get rid of cable completely. But I love live sports and find enough educational value in other programming. So I decided to go back to my old method of getting a Comcast discount – a good ole’ fashion phone negotiation.

Before I go into the negotiation and what the result was, I’ll first highlight what my package and price was (post 2-year contract expiring):

  1. Digital Basic Cable with HD DVR: $90/month (full price)
  2. Blast Cable Internet (250 Mbps): $40/month (discounted)

Total price: $130 per month (+ another $10 or so for other related fees).

Note: Comcast frequently changes their speeds and package pricing, so research what the current offerings are in your area, and substitute in the script. It’s the technique that works, not the pricing specifics.

How to Cut your Comcast Bill: Step-by-Step Script

I’ll now walk you step-by-step how I was able to get that down to $90 per month.

1. I picked up the phone and called Xfinity customer service number @: 1 (800) 934-6489.

2. I state (“disconnect service”) when prompted by the automated voice prompts.

This should get you connected to an Xfinity loyalty or retention specialist, who have a little more power to offer discounts than other customer service reps.

3. I lead my negotiation with the competition.

Comcast fears merrimack county savings bank jobs customers to AT&T U-Verse, who is offering up some great discounted packages to new customers.

My discussion was almost identical to this – and this Comcast script has reportedly worked well for hundreds of readers:

  • Me: I’d like to discontinue my service.
  • Comcast Rep: OK, may I ask why?
  • Me: Because I need to lower my bill and Comcast xfinity pay bill phone U-Verse is now available in my neighborhood and has some great offers for me, including fiber internet and cable for under $90.
  • Comcast Rep: OK. Well AT&T doesn’t offer as many HD channels, but I can look to see what kind of package we may be able to offer you.
  • Me: OK, I’ll hear you out.
  • Comcast Rep: OK, so we have a new offer where you can give you the same price as a new customer, with a 2-year contract: $79.99 for Blast 250 Mbps and Starter cable with 140 channels. There is also a $10/month DVR fee.
  • Me: Are you able to cut the DVR fee?
  • Comcast Rep: Now you can cut the Xfinity HD DVR and set top box fee, but you need to stay under 20 hours of programming recorded. If you don’t want a DVR, there is a corleone pizza san jose del cabo set-top box fee, but you can get rid of that by using a Roku with the Xfinity Stream app, Amazon Fire, or certain smart TVs. You can also sign up for eco-bill and get a discount there. After all of that, your price would be $93 with a 2-year contract.
  • Me: Are you sure you don’t have any cheaper packages?
  • Comcast Rep: Yes.
  • Me: OK, please make the switch.
  • Comcast Rep: OK, should we add on Xfinity Voice too?
  • Me: No thanks (I have Ooma digital phone service, and it’s free).

Score another one versus Comcast’s dreaded customer service.

4. I Saved 34%!

I was able to cut $47 (34%) off my cable/internet package, while getting the same channels and same internet speeds. Over 2 years, this will save me $1,128, and then I will negotiate a new 2-year contract again, or switch to U-Verse.

5. Stay Congenial

I want to point out that I was friendly, yet confident with the service rep. It may sound cliche, but treat others as you would want to be treated and you will get better results. Act like a jerk, and you’ll strike out.

Note: I also previously got rid of the Comcast modem fee by purchasing my own modem and key2benefits debit card account – saving me another $14 per month (yes, Comcast has recently raised their modem rental price). This is something you 100% must do too.

I bought an Arris SB6190 cable modem and paired it with a NetGear AC1200 router. This setup pays for itself in less than a year (saving $168 per year), and then it’s free for life! Both were top sellers in the cable modem and router categories on Amazon and had outstanding reviews. I paid a total of $120, which means the devices will pay for themselves in less than a year and then are free for many years to come, with no Comcast modem rental fee!

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – August 3, 2016 – Comcast announces a new payment option for customers who prefer to pay their TV, Internet or phone bills with cash. Through a partnership with PayNearMe, Comcast has launched a new feature on the XFINITY My Account app which enables customers to pay their bills using cash at more than 7,700 participating 7-Eleven stores. Combined with the more than 500 XFINITY stores, Comcast customers will have access to over 8,000 cash payment locations across the country.

“About five percent of our customers prefer to pay their bills in cash each month. This new partnership gives those customers a payment option that is convenient and simple.”

With most 7-Eleven stores open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, cash-paying customers now have an around-the-clock option to pay their bills close to home. A list of participating 7-Eleven stores can be found here.

Here’s how it works:

  • Go to the ‘Pay Bill’ section of the XFINITY My Account app and select the new ‘Cash via PayNearMe’ option.
  • Choose the amount you want to pay and follow the instructions provided by PayNearMe until you receive a barcode.
  • Head to a nearby participating 7-Eleven store, scan the barcode on your phone and pay the amount you selected. There is a $1.25 PayNearMe convenience fee per transaction.

Customers who are not already using the XFINITY My Account app can download it for iOS and Android.
