How to Cancel Optimum Service in Three Steps

1. Plan Your Optimum Cancellation Date

The good news is Optimum doesn’t have contracts or early termination fees, so you’re free to cancel anytime. However, there is a problem:

When Altice bought Optimum in 2016, they made a really shady change to their cancellation policy. When you cancel Optimum service, you still have to pay for the full billing cycle, not just the days you actually used. Even if you cancel Optimum just one day into the new month, you owe for the rest of the month—even if that’s hundreds of dollars. The process is so scummy that there is a lawsuit against Optimum, Cablevision, and Altice for unfair billing practices.

To avoid overcharges, you want to schedule your cancellation for just before the end of your billing cycle. Your billing cycle begins on the first date under “Billing Period” on your Optimum bill. Ideally, you want to cancel the exact day before the new period starts. However, it’s often a good idea to give yourself a couple of days so you have time to confirm the cancellation and return your equipment.

Of course, often it’s not practical to cancel Optimum service on exactly the right day. If you’re moving in the middle of your billing cycle, ally financial dealer services phone number need internet before you move. When that’s the case, you can try calling the month before the move to request Optimum adjust your billing cycle to end the day before you move. It’s possible they’ll be willing to help with this, but not necessarily. Either way, once you know when you want to cancel, it’s time to call.

Tip: Negotiate Instead of Cancelling

If you’re leaving Optimum because of pricing, consider negotiating your bill instead. You can have a experts from a bill negotiation service like BillFixers lower your Optimum bill without having to lose services or switch providers.

2. Call Optimum to Cancel

The best method for how to cancel Optimum is to call their retention department on the phone. They don’t offer the option to cancel online. You can also only call during certain hours. To make things more dfficult for you, Optimum / Altice has broken out their customer service numbers by region. Here’s the info you need:

Optimum Phone Numbers

New York (Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester): 718-860-3514

New York (Long Island): 631-393-0636

New Jersey: 973-230-6048

Connecticut: 203-870-2583

Business: 888-276-5255

Optimum Retention Hours

Monday-Friday: 8:00 AM-7:45 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Sunday: Closed

From there, you want to navigate straight past customer service to the Optimum retention department. Fortunately, that’s pretty straightforward. Tell the Optimum phone system you want to cancel or disconnect service. If there’s a hold time, you can use GetHuman to have Optimum call you back and skip waiting. Their phone tree changes, but here’s what it is (as of 2019)

Optimum Phone Tree

  1. Press 1
  2. Enter phone or account Number
  3. Press 1 to confirm
  4. Say “cancel service”
  5. Answer “Yes” – are you calling to cancel service?
  6. Say “Yes” – are you calling to remove internet or phone service?
  7. Say “Yes” – are you cancelling service because you are moving?

Once you get to a human, tell them you need to cancel Optimum service. We recommend saying you’re moving service to outside Optimum’s service area. That’s the easiest way how to cancel Optimum without them trying to convince you to stay. Optimum’s retention department’s job is to offer you promotions to get you to keep service. If you want to save money, it’s a great option. But if you want to cancel, it’s a waste of time. Because Optimum only operates in the Tri-State area, they can’t try to convince you to stay if you’re moving out of that chase bank replace debit card area.

To be safe, it’s easiest to say you’re moving somewhere like Minnesota or Florida without Suddenlink. Altice is planning to consolidate under one Altice brand. You want somewhere Altice doesn’t offer service under the Suddenlink brand either. Of course, if you’re not moving, you can be honest about the reason for cancelling. Optimum will still let you disconnect. It will just require getting through their retention department trying to convince you to stay.

Tip: Stay firm, but be friendly.

It never helps to yell at a retention rep. For one thing, it’s not nice and they have a hard job. It’s also very common for them to “make a mistake” and leave your account open or apply additional charges. If you are friendly and ask about their day, they’re more likely to make sure they do everything right.

Of course, that doesn’t mean being a pushover. Don’t let them talk you into staying if you don’t want to. A simple “No, thank you, I just need to cancel the service” goes a long way.

They’ll try to talk you into staying, but continue telling them you want to cancel service. Eventually, they’ll put through a disconnect order. Make sure they schedule it before your billing date. Ask them for a confirmation number and write it down. Before you hang up, confirm that the account is set to disconnect and the disconnect date. Then, you’re done with the hard part! Awesome work! You cancelled Optimum. But if you have any Optimum equipment, you’ve just got one step left.

3. Return your Optimum Equipment

The best method for how to cancel Optimum is to call their retention department on the phone. They don’t offer the option to cancel online. You can also only call during certain hours. To make things more dfficult for you, Optimum / Altice has broken out their customer service numbers by region. Here’s the info you need:
How to Return Optimum Equipment Via Shipping

1. Get a box and put your equipment in it. Don’t forget to include things like power cords or remotes that they’ll charge you for if you keep. You also need to let them know who you are—the best way is to make a copy of a bill and include it. If you can’t do that, just write your name, address, and account number on it. The account number is on your bill.

2. Print a free FedEx shipping Label. You can request and print one here. Then, print it out and tape it to the outside of the box.

3. Drop off the box. Optimum recommends dropping the box off at a FedEx office or authorized FedEx location, including Walgreens. When you drop it off, get a confirmation receipt. Taking a picture is also a good idea. It’s not uncommon for equipment to be lost in shipping and you’ll need to prove that you actually dropped the equipment off.

How to Return Optimum Equipment to the Optimum Store

1. Locate your nearest store. Here’s a link to the Optimum store map.

2. Drop off all your equipment. Anything you got from Optimum you have to return, like modems or cable boxes. Don’t forget things like remotes or cables.

3. Get a receipt and take a picture. Again, Optimum might lose your equipment or the store employee might not put it in the system. Make sure you have proof you dropped it off or Altice pay optimum wifi bill charge you.

Once it’s returned, you’re done! If you want to be safe, call back Optimum after your new billing date and confirm that they cancelled the account and marked the equipment returned. It’s not likely you’ll receive a confirmation letter about the cancellation, so it’s up to you to double check. If you’re at the same address or have mail forwarding at your new address, you should receive a final bill. Then, that’s it! You figured out how to cancel Optimum service!

Can you cancel Optimum Online?

In general, no. Optimum and Altice don’t offer the option to cancel Optimum online.

Optimum’s website doesn’t have a button in your account to let you cancel at all.

Optimum Live Chat will let you message with an Optimum agent. Unfortunately, their chat agents don’t have the ability to cancel service. By default, an automated chat will tell you to contact their customer loyalty team. Even if you push through to an Optimum live chat agent, they’ll tell you they don’t have those permissions.

@OptimumHelp on Twitter can talk to you about your account. It’s possible they could help with a disconnect request, but they’ll tell you to call retention first. It would require extraordinary circumstances like a disability for them to cancel online. If you want to try this, tweet them first and then DM. Please report back in the comments below if it works!

Can you cancel Optimum Business Online?

Fortunately, cancelling Optimum Business by Altice is really similar to the methods above. Optimum Business doesn’t have contracts or early termination fees, so you can cancel any time.

Contact Optimum Business support via phone at (855) 276-5255 or (866) 209-1099 to cancel. Optimum Business support is open 24/7. In some cases, you may have to speak directly to an account manager.

Make double sure to return all equipment when you disconnect Optimum Business or Altice Business services. The fees for unreturned equipment can be very steep.

If you’re only cancelling because the cost of Optimum is too high, consider negotiating your rate instead. We have a team of experts who can negotiate with Optimum Business to save you money. You can learn more about saving money on Optimum Business here.

What if my Optimum price is too high but I don’t want to cancel?

Cancelling isn’t your only option! You can also negotiate with Optimum to get the lowest rate available rate. Here’s our guide to negotiating your own bill, but we can also have an expert negotiate on your behalf to save you money! The process is really easy and we charge by splitting the savings with you, so if you don’t save, it’s free.

How Not Paying Cable Bills Could Hurt Your Credit Score

Some of the bills you pay are reported to credit bureaus and others are not. Your payments on credit cards, mortgages, and other loans, for example, are reported each month, so paying them on time can help boost, or maintain, your credit score.

Utility bill payments, including those for cable TV and cell or landline phone service, generally are not reported unless they become seriously delinquent and are sent to collections—a move that can have a serious negative effect on your credit score.

Key Takeaways

  • Cable TV, phone, and other utility bills usually aren't reported to credit bureaus or reflected in your credit score.
  • However, if you are seriously delinquent in paying your cable bill, pay optimum wifi bill may show up on your credit report.
  • You can ask to have your utility payments included in your credit report if you want to show you pay your bills on time.

Exceptions to the Rule

There are, however, a couple of exceptions. FICO, the company behind the most widely used credit scoring models, offers one score, called the FICO XD 2, that takes into account certain nontraditional data, such as utility payments. The goal is to create credit scores for consumers who might not otherwise have enough data in their records, so that potential lenders can assess their creditworthiness.

Consumers can also choose to have their utility bill payments reflected in their credit reports at Experian, one of the three major national credit bureaus, by enrolling in the American driving holidays Boost program and allowing the company to access their utility and telecom bill payment history. A person might want to do that, for example, if they don't have enough other accounts in their credit reports and are trying to build a solid credit score by showing they pay their bills on time.

What’s a Payment Worth?

Payment history is the single most important factor in your credit score. A basic FICO score, for example, is made up of:

  • Payment history (35%)
  • Credit utilization (30%)
  • Account age (15%)
  • Inquiries/new accounts (10%)
  • Credit mix (10%)

The VantageScore, a credit scoring model developed by the three major credit reporting agencies as an alternative to FICO, is based on similar criteria:

  • Payment history
  • Age and type of credit
  • Credit utilization
  • Size of balances
  • Inquiries/new accounts
  • Amount of available credit

VantageScore is opaque when it comes to the exact weight it assigns to each category. But it leaves no doubt about the importance of paying bills on time. A consumer’s payment history is the only factor the VantageScore ranks as “extremely influential.”

Late Payments and Your Credit

All creditors want to know that a borrower will pay his or her debt as agreed. They use credit reports and scores in a backwards-looking fashion to assess how much of a risk a consumer is likely to pose. If a person has established a pattern of paying their bills on time, they are viewed as a responsible user of credit and not likely to cause the creditor any financial losses. Having a history of late payments, on the other hand, signals unreliability, financial instability, and greater financial risk.

The consequences of late payments escalate in severity as the account becomes more and more delinquent. The consumer’s credit report shows payment history with degrees of lateness: on-time, 30 days late, 60 days late, 90 days late, 120 days late. Each degree of lateness causes incrementally greater damage to the credit score than the previous one.

Collection, repossession, charge-offs, bankruptcy, and other notations that signify a failure to fulfill a financial obligation may also be listed, and they result in an even greater blow to the consumer’s score than late payments.

As mentioned earlier, a cable or other utility bill will generally not be reported at all unless it is seriously delinquent and in collections. That usually happens around the 90-day mark after a missed payment. Before that, the consumer is likely to be hit with late fees and ultimately a suspension add external account capital one 360 service.

The longer you fail to pay a bill, the more damage it can do to your credit score.

How Long Do Late Payments Hurt?

Credit reports reveal the payment history on all the accounts (open or closed) that they cover, but the impact of any particular late payment on your credit score will diminish over time. Recent and multiple late payments will do more damage to your score than a single late payment that has faded from memory.

VantageScore further explains that the greatest damage comes to the consumer’s credit score in the first month after the late payment is reported. Then its impact diminishes over about two years, after which it ceases to have much effect (although the late payment stays inthe consumer’s file for seven years). If you're struggling with several recent late payments on your credit report, one of the best credit repair companies might be able to undo the damage to your credit score.

The foolproof way to lower your cable bill

OK, maybe cable isn’t as much a “necessity” as food and water—unless you really, really have to catch “Game of Thrones.” But it’s a basic household expense that can be easily bargained down with a relatively quick call to a customer service rep. I make such calls about every six months and almost always talk my way into a better deal. Not that long ago, I knocked about $15 off my basic monthly Time Warner Cable US:TWC  package, which includes cable, phone and Internet.

But before you make that call, it’s important to understand why cable providers are willing to bargain in the first place. It all has to with how the Telecommunications Act of 1996 changed the marketplace by allowing phone companies to compete with cable companies (and vice versa) and by allowing each to offer a “bundle” of services. The result? Not only are more companies vying for your cable (and phone and Internet) business, but your business is also that much larger—a $50 basic cable service bill is now probably a $100 bundled bill. So, if you move your business to the competition, there’s some serious money involved. “Today, when a customer leaves, they take everything,” says technology industry analyst Jeff Kagan.

Still, it’s not a guarantee that Time Warner—or for that matter, any cable provider—will cut you a deal. But over the years, I’ve learned how to be a better bargainer, and I’ve also talked to industry pros about what you can do to up the odds of lowering your bill.

Here are my eight takeaways:

1. Call at set intervals

Just because you get a bargain one month doesn’t mean you can ask for another one the next. You need to pace yourself accordingly. Most cable providers will offer you a deal—typically, a lower bundled price or free extras (like a movie channel)—that’s good for half a year. The bet they’re making is that you won’t remember when the six months are up. My advice: Don’t let them win that bet. (But if the deal they offer is good for, say, three months, you can adjust your call schedule accordingly.) Still, Time Warner says it welcomes a call at any time, especially given the many options and offers it almost always has on the table. “We want to hear from a customer any time their interests or budget changes,” says a Time Warner spokesperson.

2. Do your homework

Sure, you can call and play Willie the Whiner and say you deserve a better deal—just because you’re such a nice person. But you’re more likely to make an effective case if you can quote a promotion you’ve been offered by a competing company. Just save those mailers you get—or even if you toss them, just look on the competition’s website and see what they’re offering. Then, ask your provider to match the deal, or—better yet—beat it. “I think of it like buying a new car. You know the prices at different dealers so you can negotiate,” says Dan Rayburn, a telecommunications industry analyst.

3. Learn to separate the good deals from the bad

When I recently called Time Warner, the first “deal” I was offered had me paying about $15 extra each month. Granted, it was for a package that included faster Internet service and additional cable channels, but my goal was to save money, not spend more of it. Eventually, I got the savings I wanted, but it’s important to understand that deals can be deceptive: In fact, sometimes a lower-priced offer may be no bargain at all if it means a reduction in services. The bottom line: Make sure you know what you’re getting. And be aware of the fact that any time you call a cable provider about a potential deal, you run the risk of being “upsold”—it’s the telecommunications industry equivalent of being asked, “Do you want fries with that?” (A Time Warner spokesperson says the company simply wants to give customers the opportunity “to try products and services they may not have.”)

4. Know what’s important to you

As long as we’re talking about separating the good deals from the bad, it’s also important to separate the relevant from the irrelevant. A case in point: Almost every time I call my cable provider, I get an offer that involves free or low-cost HBO. There’s just one problem: I don’t watch much HBO anymore—I prefer getting DVDs of the couple of HBO series that interest me and avoiding the time-wasting trap of watching too many middle-of-the-road movies. As I’ve learned, a bargain is only a bargain if it’s something you actually want.

5. Play nice

The whole attracting-flies-with-honey thing applies to cable providers, too. If you get angry when you’re trying to negotiate, you probably won’t talk your way into a deal. (Even if your anger may be justified by past issues, such as service outages or long wait times.) And while you can threaten to leave the company as a bargaining tool, it’s a card you shouldn’t play too often, since it becomes somewhat meaningless in that boy-who-cried wolf way. If anything, you may be better off establishing that you’d like to stay with the company because you like their product. As with any service provider, cable companies often recognize the importance of customer loyalty.

6. If at first you don’t succeed…

This isn’t about calling month-after-month for a new deal when you’ve already gotten a great one. Rather, it’s about what to do when you’re flat-out rejected for any kind of deal. Sometimes, the simplest solution is to call back a few days later. A different customer-service rep may be authorized to offer a different deal. And the promotions themselves frequently change, as Time Warner itself admits, so each day potentially brings a different offer.

7. Learn to love the lock

When you call for a deal, cable providers will sometimes ask you to lock in a package, so that you’ll be unable to cancel penalty-free for a set period of up to two years. The obvious risk is that during that time you may find a better offer (or you may decide to cut the cord altogether). But experts say lock-ins can be to a customer’s advantage, since there’s a good chance that your cable bill will increase. “I’d lock in for the next 10 years if I could,” says cable industry expert Dan Rayburn. (But if you do lock in, there’s probably little point to calling back every six months—wait until the lock period is about to end.)

8. Pay your bill on time

It may be obvious, but for a cable provider to want your business, you’ve got to show that you’re a good customer. And if you can’t keep to your end of the deal going by making regular, on-time payments, you’re not in much of a position to bargain.

If you’re moving in the middle of your billing cycle, you’ll need internet before you move.

Because Optimum only operates in the Tri-State area, they can’t try to convince you to stay if you’re moving out of that service area.

Make sure you have proof you dropped it off or Altice will charge you.

If you’re moving in the middle of your billing cycle, you’ll need internet before you move.

Because Optimum only operates in the Tri-State area, they can’t try to convince you to stay if you’re moving out of that service area.

Make sure you have proof you dropped it off or Altice will charge you.

If you’re interested in saving money on Optimum, you can get started by signing up in under five minutes.

Do you have questions about your Optimum billing statement or account that were not covered in your initial contract? We suggest you visit the Optimum customer care FAQs. You also have the ability to receive additional information from customer service by calling 1-877-273-7626.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Optimum will charge consumers late payment fees if they do not remit payment by the due date listed on the bill. It is best to call the local customer service number listed in the payment section of this article for more information on fees and possible payment plans. Other fees assessed by Optimum may include:

  • Returned check free
  • Security deposit

I Can’t Make a Payment

Optimum does not discuss payment options if a customer is having trouble paying a cable bill. In some states, a partial payment will be applied to the telephone bill first because that service is considered more important than cable or Internet services. There is likely a payment plan option with Optimum. It is always best to contact customer service as soon as you realize you are financially unable to make payment in full.

Will They Work With Me to Pay My Bill?

Optimum offers very little information for the consumer looking to resolve a past due bill. Do you have first-hand experience with this company? Tell us how they work with past due account balances and help other consumers take control of their finances.
