How to embed a youtube video in your tweet -

The embed tool allows you to search for and add content from Flickr, Slideshare and YouTube to your modules/organisations.

Embed YouTube Video

  • From the module/organisation menu navigate to the appropriate content area; Learning Resources has been used for this example.
  • Ensure that Edit Mode is switched ON from the top right of the screen, if it isn’t already.
  • Select the Add Content action link and click YouTube Video.

Search & Select

Enter your terms into the search box then click Go.

Tip

You can link to Minerva support video guides that are hosted on YouTube, they can be found by entering the terms "vleservice leeds" using All of the words as the search option. Our videos are best viewed in full screen mode, see the Watch and Edit section of this guide for more information.

You will be presented with a list of search results. Preview can be used to check that you are embedding the correct video. When you have found the video you want to add click Select.

Options

You can change the name displayed
  • Name - This field is automatically populated with the video name, but you can change this to something more relevant if you wish.
  • Colour of Name - You can use the picker to alter the text colour.
  • Description - You can enter any optional descriptive text.
  • View - You can choose from the default Thumbnail, Text Link with Player and Embed.*

Embed Options

  • Show YouTube URL - Display a hyperlink to the video.
  • Show YouTube Information - This includes the video duration, the uploaders username and date published.

Attachments

Attach local file - You can add a file by clicking Browse My Computer or Browse Content Collection.

Standard Options

  • Permit Users to View this Content - You can make the content available immediately, or select No if you wish to work on the item and release it at a later date.
  • Track Number of Views - This records who and when the item was accessed.
  • Select Date and Time Restrictions - You can display the item after and until a specific time and date.

Click Submit to embed the video.

Watch & Edit

Click Watch Video to open the player window, then select the play button to start the video.

Some videos are best viewed in full screen, this can be done by clicking the full screen icon at the bottom right hand corner of the video.

To close the player window click X at the top right.

Edit

Once you have embedded the video it isn't possible to change the display options, if you want to do this you will need to embed it again.

You can still change the name, add a file or restrict who has access to it by selecting the action link to the right of the name then click Edit. When you have made your changes click Submit to confirm.

Insert online videos that you can watch right in Word without having to leave the document.

To insert the video and play the video, you must be connected to the internet.

The video plays directly from the website, and it has the site's controls for playing, pausing, volume, and so on.

Insert as Online Video

  1. In your web browser, locate the video you want. Word supports inserting videos from Vimeo,  YouTube, and SlideShare.net.

  2. Copy the URL of the web page from the Address bar of your browser. Alternatively, copy the embed code of the video. 

  3. Switch to Word and select the position in the document where you want to place the video.

  4. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, select Online Video.

  5. In the Insert Video dialog box, paste the URL you copied in step 2.

  6. Select Insert.

Troubleshooting

Not all online videos from these sites are allowed to be embedded. You should check on the video site to find out if a certain video can be embedded. 

Embed video as web content in Word for the web

If you're using Word for the web, you can quickly embed videos from several supported sources as web content by just pasting the URL in the document.

  1. Copy the URL of the web content you want to embed.

  2. While connected to the Internet, paste the URL in your Word for the web document. The pasted URL automatically becomes embedded content.

Terms of Use and Privacy policies

When you use an online video in a Word document, please be aware of the terms of use and privacy policies of the web site where the video is stored. Word supports the insertion of online videos from the following sites:

Your browser does not support video.

  1. Click Insert > Online Video.

  2. In the Insert Video window, you can search for videos on YouTube or insert a video’s embed code. (You get the embed code from the page where the video lives.)

  3. When you find the video you want, just click Insert.

The online video that's inserted can only be played when you're connected to the internet.  

If the Online Video button appears grayed out, make sure you’re not in Compatibility Mode. You know you’re in Compatibility Mode if [Compatibility Mode] appears after the document name in the title bar at the top of the Word window. To convert the document, click File > Info > Convert. To learn more about Compatibility Mode, see Open a document in an earlier version of Word.

If you want to add videos from YouTube and you don’t see it as an option, click the YouTube button at the bottom of the Insert Video window. If you don’t see a YouTube icon, make sure you’re Signed in to Office.

Note: This feature is currently being rolled out for Word for the web and will be available soon for all users.

  1. In your web browser, locate the video you want and copy its URL from the address bar of your browser.

  2. Switch back to Word for the web and select the position in the document where you want to place the video.

  3. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, select Online Video.

You’ve probably been caught off guard by videos that play automatically on Facebook, Twitter, or just across the internet in general. They begin playing as soon as you load a page or (if they’re more deviously implemented) when you start scrolling through a page.

Automatic video play is a feature that, while nice to have when it’s surfacing content that’s related to your interests, can be pretty annoying. Autoplay videos can be harmful, too, exposing you to violent, offensive, or otherwise unwanted content that you shouldn’t have to see by default.

Whether you just want to put an end to autoplay videos on social media platforms or are looking for a more comprehensive fix, we’ve got some tips. Keep in mind that you’ll need to adjust these settings for every device that you use, since your preferences on, say, your phone do not automatically push to your PC.

Facebook

If you’re using Facebook on your browser, you can turn off autoplay videos this way:

  • Go to the drop-down menu at the top right of the page.
  • Select “Settings & Privacy” > “Settings.”
  • Look for the “Videos” listing on the left-hand menu. Inside of that option is a toggle where you can turn off autoplaying videos.

Facebook has similar options available for its iOS and Android apps:

Using the iOS app

  • Click the menu button on the bottom of your screen.
  • Once you’re there, tap “Settings & Privacy,” then “Settings.”
  • Scroll down until you find “Media and Contacts,” then tap “Videos and Photos.”
  • Finally, once you find “Autoplay,” you can turn off the feature.

Using the Android app

  • Click the menu button at the top right of your screen.
  • Once you’re there, scroll down and tap “Settings & Privacy,” then “Settings.”
  • Scroll down until you find “Media and Contacts” and tap on it.
  • Tap on “Autoplay” and set it to “Never Autoplay Videos.”

Twitter

  • Click on “More” in the left-hand menu, and then on “Settings and privacy.”
  • Select “Accessibility, display, and languages” > “Data usage”
  • Click on the “Autoplay” setting. You can then switch off the autoplaying of videos on your feed.

Using the iOS and Android apps

  • Click the profile picture at the top of your phone screen.
  • Select “Settings and privacy” in the menu.
  • Navigate to “Data usage,” tap on “Video autoplay” and set it to “Never.”

Instagram

Instagram doesn’t allow for autoplay videos to be turned off, so you’ll have to tread carefully here. Videos won’t autoplay with sound if you use Instagram on your browser. Stopping autoplay on mobile devices is possible, but a little roundabout.

Using a mobile app

  • Go to your profile page and tap on the three lines in the upper right corner
  • Go to “Settings” > “Account” > “Cellular Data Use”
  • For Android: toggle the “Data Saver” on and tap on “High Resolution Media.” If you then select “Never,” then media such as videos won’t load in advance.
  • For iOS: toggle on “Use Less Data”

Reddit

Reddit, like most sites that host video, autoplays videos by default. However, it’s pretty easy to turn it off.

Using the newest design

  • Click your username in the upper-right corner and select “User settings” in the menu.
  • Select the “Feed settings” tab at the top of the page, and toggle off the “Autoplay media” switch.

Using the legacy version

  • Click “Preferences” next to your username in the top right of the window.
  • Under “Media,” look for and uncheck “Autoplay Reddit videos on the desktop comments page.”
  • You’ll need to hit “save options” at the bottom of the screen to put the changes through.

Using the mobile app

  • Tap the icon next to the search bar, then hit “Settings.”
  • You’ll see “Autoplay” near the top of the page, and you can easily choose to turn it off.

Desktop browsers

There are a variety of desktop browsers out there — some of which let you turn off video autoplay and some of which don’t.

Using Google Chrome

If you use Google Chrome and want to turn off video autoplay — you can’t. There used to be an experimental command-line flag that allowed you to turn them off (you can find the flags by typing chrome://flags/ into Chrome’s address field), but it’s disappeared.

You can turn the sound off (which might help a bit):

  • Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner
  • Select “Settings” > “Site settings” > “Sound”
  • Toggle sound off. You can add exceptions for specific sites here.

Using Microsoft Edge

Interestingly, Microsoft’s Edge browser, which is also based on the Chromium open-source design, does let you turn off — well, at least, limit — video autoplay:

  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Settings.”
  • In the left-hand column, click on “Site Permissions,” and then scroll down to and select “Media autoplay.”

You can either allow audio and video to play automatically or limit it. According to the instructions, whether autoplay will work or not will depend on “how you’ve visited the page and whether you interacted with media in the past.”

Using Firefox

Firefox has a similar feature that lets you turn off autoplay, for the most part.

  • Click on the three lines in the upper right corner of the browser and select “Preferences.”
  • In the left-hand column, click on “Privacy & Security.”
  • Scroll down to the section headed “Permissions” and look for “Autoplay.” Click on the button marked “Settings.”

A drop-down menu will let you allow audio and video, block audio, or block audio and video. You can also specify sites that you want to differ from your defaults — for example, if you block audio and video as a default, but you want to allow it for, say, The Verge.

Using Safari

Safari makes it simple to disable autoplay. In fact, it assumes that you want the feature disabled to begin with. However, if it hasn’t been disabled — or if you want to make some exceptions to the rule — here’s what you do:

  • While in the app, go to Safari > Preferences in the top menu.
  • Click on “Websites” in the top menu.
  • Look for and select “Auto-Play” in the side menu.
  • Look for the drop-down menu at the bottom right of the window and select “Never Auto-Play.”

As with Firefox, you can whitelist any sites that you want to be an exception to the rule.

How to use social media - ESRC

There are many social media tools you can use but you need to ensure that the resources you use work for you and that you have time to devote to them.

It includes:

  • social networking – Facebook and LinkedIn
  • blogging – WordPress
  • microblogging – Twitter
  • video sharing – YouTube
  • photo-sharing – Flickr and Pinterest
  • content collecting and curating – Scoop.it, Reddit.

Do not try to have a presence on every social media platform. It’s best to use one or two platforms well, rather than a large number badly.

In this guidance we will cover some of the most effective tools for promoting your research in depth.

Using Twitter

Twitter can be a very effective tool for:

  • increasing the visibility of your research
  • networking
  • keeping up to date
  • communicating with people and subjects that are relevant to you.

Twitter has become increasingly popular with academics as well as students, policymakers, politicians and the general public. It has now become the social media platform of choice for many.

What you should tweet about

The type of information you tweet can depend on whether you are tweeting as an individual or as an organisation, project or group.

If you have a personal Twitter account you may want to mix tweets about your research with other things that are of interest to you, for example, your hobbies, news and general observations.

If you are tweeting on behalf of an organisation, project or group then you may choose to only send research-related tweets.

You might want to tweet about:

  • details of new publications or resources you’ve produced
  • news items that feature your research
  • links to any blog posts or features you’ve written
  • thoughts on conferences you attend
  • questions where you want to invite feedback
  • interesting news items you’ve found
  • compelling photographs and videos.

How to use hashtags

Hashtags can be used to filter content on Twitter about a particular subject or topic. You could use a hashtag to promote an event or conference, a competition or publication.

When choosing a hashtag you should:

  • avoid using #esrc-prefixed hashtags, which we use for ESRC activities and promotions
  • double check that they cannot be misinterpreted or spell something else when the words are put together without spaces
  • be aware of any major events that happen on or near a time you intend to use a hashtag
  • check hashtags you’ve put on scheduled tweets in case any meanings have changed
  • check that any new hashtag you want to use is not already being used by someone else
  • stay consistent – it will be confusing to users to have more than one hashtag for the same event or topic.

It’s ok to piggyback on trending hashtags as long as your research is relevant to this content.

When to tweet

You should tweet at times when your followers are most likely to see your tweets.

If your academic followers are mainly UK-based then it’s generally best to tweet during daytime working hours on weekdays. However, many Twitter users also use it outside working hours, particularly on their mobile devices.

If there is a tweet that is particularly important to you, you could tweet it at several different times and on different days. This could also help to reach more of your overseas followers and anyone who missed it first time.

You should aim to tweet frequently – but do not tweet for the sake of it. Always try to ensure that your tweets are interesting. If you are perceived as boring or a spammer then you may lose some of your followers.

Tools such as Hootsuite or TweetDeck allow you to manage your tweets and followers more easily. You can also schedule tweets in advance, which is useful if you want to tweet after normal working hours or so that tweets get picked up in another time zone.

Building and strengthening your Twitter presence

It may not be as difficult as you think to attract followers on Twitter. However, you will have to put some effort into making your Twitter account attractive to other users. They will only follow you if you appear interesting and relevant to them.

You should:

  • tweet interesting information. Before you start chasing followers it’s a good idea to have already tweeted relevant content. This will give other users a taste of the sort of tweets they can expect to see from you
  • ensure that your Twitter profile provides clear information about you and your interests. Blank or poorly written profiles make it difficult for anyone to know if you are worth following. If you have a blog or website include the relevant link in your profile
  • include a profile picture – this could be a logo or a photograph of you. Avoid leaving the default egg icon in place for too long
  • follow people you know and are likely to follow you back. The big challenge is to attract people who do not know you but who share similar interests.

Once you get started you can strengthen your Twitter presence by:

  • following people who share similar interests to you
  • retweeting other people’s content – most Twitter users appreciate this
  • providing feedback on tweets and answering questions that have asked
  • tweeting links to interesting articles or news items and including the author or publisher’s Twitter handle
  • including relevant hashtags in your tweets to attract people with an interest in your subject
  • ask questions and reply to responses
  • mix your research-related tweets with interesting or amusing posts about other aspects of your life
  • subscribe to relevant Twitter lists
  • promote your Twitter account at every opportunity, including it on your email signature, blog and conference slides
  • tweet regularly, but be careful not to spam or annoy your followers.

Hosting a Twitter chat

Twitter chats can be a useful way to connect with your audience and build relationships.

A Twitter chat happens in real-time and is usually centred on a unique hashtag. Ideally the chat should last no longer than an hour.

When planning a Twitter chat you should:

  • arrange a suitable time. You may need to consider things like whether the chat will include participants from different time zones
  • if the chat is about discussing a particular issue, such as a new call, give participants a few days to digest any information beforehand
  • if the chat is after an event, try to hold it as close to the event as you can, while everything is still fresh
  • avoid lunchtimes, afternoons that are followed by public holidays or other major national events
  • schedule enough time to set up the chat and to respond afterwards
  • consider co-hosting if there are other organisations involved in your project – it can open up the chat to a wider audience
  • check you have the correct equipment. You’ll need at least one internet-connected device, ideally a PC or laptop. Make sure you know the wi-fi password at the location you’ll be tweeting from
  • check the hashtag you want to use is available and suitable
  • make a list of filler tweets that can be used during a lull in the conversation – if you’ve been receiving questions via email prior to the chat, you could use your answers to these
  • promote the Twitter chat in advance with what the chat is about, when it is happening, who else will be involved, the hashtag to use and links to relevant resources
  • consider other channels for promotion, such as an event page or your email signature.

During the chat you should:

  • welcome the participants and remind them of the topics you are there to discuss
  • think carefully before answering any questions while keeping the conversation flowing. If you are unsure of an answer or need to source some more information, let the participants know you will come back to them and move on
  • if an answer is longer than the character count, you can spread it over tweets using numbering to indicate a Twitter thread. Try to do this sparingly so answers do not get confused
  • if a participant  is taking over with questions only relevant to them, suggest they direct message after the chat. This will allow you to give tailored responses to that individual and free up time to respond to other participants
  • keep the chat on topic and do not start any off-topic conversations. If a participant asks an off-topic question that you are happy to respond to, you can, but do not use the hashtag.

At the end, thank the participants and officially end the chat. If you plan to summarise the discussion, let participants know when and where this will be available.

Creating a blog

Blogging offers an effective and inexpensive way to disseminate and publicise research, as well as involve research participants and end users. It allows an online community to share thoughts and opinions, and debate a subject.

There are several ways of creating your own blog, including using blogging platforms such as WordPress or setting one up on your website.

How to write a good blog post

You should:

  • focus each blog post on a single topic
  • develop a writing style and tone appropriate to your subject material
  • post often, even if your posts are short
  • allow readers to comment on your posts
  • develop a distinctive voice.

Attracting interest in your blog

If you go to the effort of creating a blog then you probably want to ensure that you attract as many relevant visitors to it as you can. You can do this by:

  • making your blog posts interesting – they are more likely to be shared and will also encourage return visits
  • writing well and often
  • promoting your blog through your own channels, on your website, in email signatures and conference presentations
  • using other social media, such as Twitter, to share details of latest blog posts to your followers
  • adding links to other relevant blogs within yours – the authors of these blogs will appreciate this and may provide a reciprocal link
  • encouraging readers to make comments, and reply in a timely manner
  • setting up an RSS feed, which will let RSS users know when you’ve published a new post
  • tagging your posts with categories. This will improve the chances of your posts being found by search engines and readers
  • using high quality, relevant images.

Social media for video

Videos can be a useful and innovative way of getting your message across, but they must be appropriate for the target audience.

They can be relatively expensive. However, there are free apps that make videos easier than ever to produce.

If you do decide to produce a video you should find a unique angle and avoid the typical corporate video.

Sharing videos on YouTube and Vimeo

Among the most popular video-sharing sites are YouTube and Vimeo. You can also embed YouTube and Vimeo videos on your own website.

Many users will find videos through searching using specific keywords. You need to make sure that your videos have clear and meaningful titles and descriptions. These will affect how a video performs on social media sites as well as in search engines like Google.

You must:

  • get the title right. Use descriptive titles that summarise what the video is about and include keyword phrases that will perform well in search. You can also edit titles of older videos if they are not getting many views
  • use clear and meaningful descriptions that describe what the video is about. Again, these can be refined for older videos
  • before uploading the video, ensure that the filename includes keywords and phrases. Also include relevant tags, using spaces and commas, for example – social science, ESRC, impact, research, research impact. You could look at what tags similar videos use.

Promoting your videos

To help  increase traffic to your videos, you should:

  • after uploading a video, use the social share buttons to promote through other social media channels
  • post videos in response to other people’s videos
  • look for related videos – particularly ones that are popular – and create a response that references them
  • include a relevant URL at the end of your video back to your website, and vice versa.

Creating podcasts

Podcasts provide a cheap and effective way to deliver audio content to your audiences. They are particularly useful for broadcasting interviews, debates and lectures.

You can also record podcasts remotely, via Skype or telephone, with people that you cannot meet face to face.

The benefits of podcasting

Podcasting is a way to:

  • present your research and share ideas in an interesting format
  • raise your profile
  • add a different type of content to your website or blog.

Planning a podcast

Before you create a podcast you should:

  • define what the podcast is about and what topics you want to cover
  • identify who you would like to take part in the recording and invite them to participate
  • prepare a script that covers any questions you want to ask or points to get across
  • ensure that you find a quiet room where you can record the podcast
  • test all equipment and ensure that any battery-operated devices are working and fully charged
  • turn off your mobile phone
  • practise recording in advance.

When recording you should:

  • make sure your podcast is enjoyable and interesting for your listeners – be enthusiastic and engaging
  • ensure that the language you use is appropriate for your target audience
  • consider what length you want it to be and whether something needs to be split into several episodes
  • ensure everyone speaks clearly and not too fast
  • try not to  sound like you or other participants are reading a script
  • be yourself.

Before publishing your podcast you should ensure that anyone who participated in the podcast is happy with it.

You should also produce podcasts regularly – your audience will expect them.

Podcasting equipment

The technical side of producing a podcast can seem daunting but it is usually a relatively straightforward process.

You will need:

  • a voice or call recorder that provides good sound quality – you could use a voice recording app on a smartphone
  • editing software – there are free services including Audacity and GarageBand for Mac
  • a platform to host the podcasts, such as iTunes, PodBean, your website or blog.

Promoting your podcast

To increase the number of listeners, you should:

  • use clear titles and descriptions to help tell people what the podcast is about and increase the likelihood of people finding it through search engines
  • share your podcasts through other social media accounts
  • add your podcasts to your website or blog setup
  • an RSS feed so that people can easily subscribe to your podcasts.

How to embed a youtube video in your tweet -

Avoid extra tap to play a YouTube video that appears in an embedded tweet in WKWebView

OK, I realise I'm asking a pretty specific question here, but I haven't been able to crack this one on my own.

I have a WKWebView and I'm using it to render an embedded timeline of tweets from a single account. So the HTML loaded into the webview looks like:

It all loads just great and I've even implemented the so links open up in Safari.

For tweets that include a YouTube link you get this poster image of the YouTube video with a blue button with a white border and triangle. You tap that button and then the element reloads with an embedded YouTube player. Now you have to tap again to actually play the video.

I've tried changing the property to (also the deprecated property), but neither change the behaviour.

When these tweets are loaded in a desktop browser, they look similar but then YouTube videos start auto playing after the YouTube player loads (so just one click). If I load Twitter on Safari on my phone, I still need 2 taps (like the embedded version), but I'm assuming that's because Safari prevents videos from auto playing without user action.

If ever there was a perfect pairing of two different media platforms, it's YouTube and Twitter. The former makes it easy to upload all sorts of video content, while the latter makes sharing it with your followers as simple as a few clicks. 

And who knows — your followers might just retweet the video and make it go viral.

Before that can happen, though, you need to know how to share YouTube videos to Twitter. There are two ways, and they're both pleasantly simple.

How to share a YouTube video on Twitter from YouTube's sharing menu

1. On a desktop browser, while logged into both your YouTube and Twitter accounts, go to the YouTube video you want to share.

2. Click the word "SHARE" underneath the video, and then hit the Twitter icon to draft a tweet with the video link embedded.

Embed YouTube Videos in Moodle

Embed YouTube videos into Moodle webpages so your students can watch without leaving Moodle.

Step 1: Get YouTube Video Embed Code

  1. Go to the YouTube video you would like to show your students.
  2. Under the video, click Share. A box with a link to the video will open.
  3. Under the link, click Embed. A box with the embed code will open. (Note: below the embed code, you will see additional options for customizing the display of the video. If you select one of these customizations, the embed code will change accordingly.)
  4. Making sure all the embed code is selected, copy the code.

Step 2: Embed the YouTube Video in Moodle

  1. Go to your course in Moodle.
  2. From the upper right of the Moodle course, click Turn editing on.
  3. In the section from where you would like to link your file, from the Add a resource drop-down menu, choose Compose a web page. The Adding a new Resource screen will open.
  4. Give your webpage a name (this will be visible to students).
  5. Optionally write a short summary to describe your page. This summary appears in the list of Resources.
  6. Under Compose a web page, under Full text, in the toolbar, click on the HTML icon (looks like a pair of angle brackets).
  7. Create Moodle Webpage
  8. Paste in the YouTube embed code.
  9. If you like, you can add additional text, images, or videos to contextualize the YouTube video.
  10. At the bottom of the screen, click Save and return to course. The link to the web page will now appear in the course section.

To insert the video and play the video, you must be connected to the internet.

The video plays directly from the website, and it has the site's controls for playing, pausing, volume, and so on.

Insert as Online Video

  1. In your web browser, locate the video you want. Word supports inserting videos from Vimeo,  YouTube, and SlideShare.net.

  2. Copy the URL of the web page from the Address bar of your browser. Alternatively, copy the embed code of the video.

  1. Copy the URL of the web content you want to embed.

  2. While connected to the Internet, paste the URL in your Word for the web document. The pasted URL automatically becomes embedded content.

Terms of Use and Privacy policies

When you use an online video in a Word document, please be aware of the terms of use and privacy policies of the web site where the video is stored. Word supports the insertion of online videos from the following sites:

Your browser does not support video.

  1. Click Insert > Online Video.

  2. In the Insert Video window, you can search for videos on YouTube or insert a video’s embed code. (You get the embed code from the page where the video lives.)

  3. When you find the video you want, just click Insert.

The online video that's inserted can only be played when you're connected to the internet.  

If the Online Video button appears grayed out, make sure you’re not in Compatibility Mode. You know you’re in Compatibility Mode if [Compatibility Mode] appears after the document name in the title bar at the top of the Word window. To convert the document, click File > Info > Convert. To learn more about Compatibility Mode, see Open a document in an earlier version of Word.

If you want to add videos from YouTube and you don’t see it as an option, click the YouTube button at the bottom of the Insert Video window. If you don’t see a YouTube icon, make sure you’re Signed in to Office.

Note: This feature is currently being rolled out for Word for the web and will be available soon for all users.

You’ve probably been caught off guard by videos that play automatically on Facebook, Twitter, or just across the internet in general. They begin playing as soon as you load a page or (if they’re more deviously implemented) when you start scrolling through a page.

Automatic video play is a feature that, while nice to have when it’s surfacing content that’s related to your interests, can be pretty annoying. Autoplay videos can be harmful, too, exposing you to violent, offensive, or otherwise unwanted content that you shouldn’t have to see by default.

Whether you just want to put an end to autoplay videos on social media platforms or are looking for a more comprehensive fix, we’ve got some tips. Keep in mind that you’ll need to adjust these settings for every device that you use, since your preferences on, say, your phone do not automatically push to your PC.

Facebook

If you’re using Facebook on your browser, you can turn off autoplay videos this way:

  • Go to the drop-down menu at the top right of the page.
  • Select “Settings & Privacy” > “Settings.”
  • Look for the “Videos” listing on the left-hand menu. Inside of that option is a toggle where you cheap piggy banks turn off autoplaying videos.

Facebook has similar options available for its iOS and Android apps:

Using the iOS app

  • Click the menu button on the bottom of your screen.

    Using the iOS and Android apps

    Instagram

    Instagram doesn’t allow for autoplay videos to be turned off, so you’ll have to tread carefully here. Videos won’t autoplay with how to embed a youtube video in your tweet if you use Instagram on your browser. Stopping autoplay on mobile devices is possible, but a little roundabout.

    Using a mobile app

    • Go to your profile page and tap on the three lines in the upper right corner
    • Go to “Settings” > “Account” > “Cellular Data Use”
    • For Android: toggle the “Data Saver” on and tap on “High Resolution Media.” If you then select “Never,” then media such as videos won’t load in advance.
    • For iOS: toggle on “Use Less Data”

    Reddit

    Reddit, like most sites that host video, autoplays videos by default. However, it’s pretty easy to turn it off.

    Using the newest design

    • Click your username in the upper-right corner and select “User settings” in the menu.
    • Select the “Feed settings” tab at the top of the page, and toggle off the “Autoplay media” switch.

    Using the legacy version

    • Click “Preferences” next to your username in the top right of the window.
    • Under “Media,” look for and uncheck “Autoplay Reddit videos on the desktop comments page.”
    • You’ll need to hit “save options” at the bottom of the how to embed a youtube video in your tweet to put the changes through.

    Using the mobile app

    • Tap the icon next to the search bar, then hit “Settings.”
    • You’ll see “Autoplay” near the top of the page, and you can easily choose to turn it off.

    Desktop browsers

    Using Google Chrome

    If you use Google Chrome and want to turn off video autoplay — you can’t. There used to be an experimental command-line flag that allowed you to turn them off (you can find the flags by typing chrome://flags/ into Chrome’s address field), but it’s disappeared.

    • Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner
    • Select “Settings” > “Site settings” > “Sound”

    Interestingly, Microsoft’s Edge browser, which is also based on the Chromium open-source design, does let you turn off — well, at least, limit — video autoplay:

    • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select “Settings.”
    • In the left-hand column, click on “Site Permissions,” and then scroll down to and select “Media autoplay.”

    You can either allow audio and video to play automatically or limit it. According to the instructions, whether autoplay will work or not will depend on “how you’ve visited the page and whether you interacted with media in the past.”

    Using Firefox

    Firefox has a similar feature that lets you turn off autoplay, for the most part.

    • Click on the three lines in the upper right corner of the browser and select “Preferences.”
    • In the left-hand column, click on “Privacy & Security.”
    • Scroll down to the section headed “Permissions” and look for “Autoplay.” Click on the button marked “Settings.”

    A drop-down menu will let you allow audio and video, block audio, or block audio and video. You can also specify sites that you want to differ from your defaults — for example, if you block audio and video as a default, but you want to allow it for, say, The Verge.

    Using Safari

    Safari makes it simple to disable autoplay. In fact, it assumes that you want the feature disabled to begin with. However, if it hasn’t been disabled — or if you want to make some exceptions to the rule — here’s what you do:

    • While in the app, go to Safari > Preferences in the top menu.
    • Click on “Websites” in the top menu.
    • Look for and select “Auto-Play” in the side menu.
    • Look for the drop-down menu at the bottom right of the window and select “Never Auto-Play.”

    As with Firefox, you can whitelist any sites that you want to be an exception to the rule.

    The embed tool allows you to search for and add content from Flickr, Slideshare and YouTube to your modules/organisations.

    Embed YouTube Video

    • From the module/organisation menu navigate to the appropriate content area; Learning Resources has been used for this example.
    • Ensure that Edit Mode is switched ON from the top right of the screen, if it isn’t already.
    • Select the Add Content action link and click YouTube Video.

    Search & Select

    Enter your terms into the search box then click Go.

    Tip

    You can link to Minerva support video guides that are hosted on YouTube, they can be found by entering the terms "vleservice leeds" using All of the words as the search option. Our videos are best viewed in full screen mode, see the Watch and Edit section of this guide for more information.

    You will be presented with a list of search results. Preview can be used to check that you are embedding the correct video. When you have found the video you want to add click Select.

    Options

    You can change the name displayed
    • Name - This field is how to embed a youtube video in your tweet populated with the video name, but you can change this to something more relevant if you wish.
    • Colour of Name - You can use the picker to alter the text colour.
    • Description - You can enter any optional descriptive text.
    • View - You can choose from the default Thumbnail, Text Link with Player and Embed.*

    • Show YouTube URL - Display a hyperlink to the video.
    • Show YouTube Information - This includes the video duration, the uploaders username and date published.

    Attachments

    Attach local file - You can add a file by clicking Browse My Computer or Browse How to embed a youtube video in your tweet Collection.

    Standard Options

    • Permit Users to View this Content - You can make the content available immediately, or select No if you wish to work on the item and release it at a later date.
    • Track Number of Views - This records who and when the item was accessed.
    • Select Date and Time Restrictions - You can display the item after and until a specific time and date.

    Click Submit to embed the video.

    Click Watch Video to open the player window, then select the play button to start the video.

    Some videos are best viewed in full screen, this can be done by clicking the full screen icon at the bottom right hand corner of the video.

    To close the player window click X at the top right.

    Edit

    Once you have embedded the video it isn't possible to change the display options, if you want to do this you will need to embed it again.

    You can still change the name, add a file or restrict who has access to it by selecting the action link to the right of the name then click Edit. When you have made your changes click Submit to confirm.

    1. I understand your reluctance, however the information required for a bank transfer is usually the same as the information that appears on a paper cheque... so if you use (or have used) them, it's about the same amount of risk (quite low).
