Emergency Assistance

ICS partners with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona to distribute over 3,500 emergency food bags each month to low-income seniors, individuals and families in need. Registered households community food bank country club receive one food allotment a month containing Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) items, and are then allowed to visit one more time during the month to pick up extra food items provided by the food bank. As supplies are available, ICS allows recipients to select supplemental food items to stretch their resources. This extra food comes from community food drives and from people like you. The ICS Food Bank also stocks a small supply of personal hygiene items and provides emergency food bags for homeless individuals or households who have run out of food and are in crisis.

The ICS Food Bank is the second largest provider of emergency food in Southern Arizona. We are dependent upon community food drives and donations to help keep the shelves stocked and to offer a selection of healthy foods to households in hardship. Volume purchasing arrangements with area food suppliers enables ICS to multiply every dollar donated many times over.

ICS serves clients from all across Pima County at its Food Bank. Those who turn to us are often in temporary crisis and need a little help to get over the hurdle.

Organizations Filed Purposes: We change lives in the communities we serve by feeding the hungry today and building a healthy, hunger-free tomorrow. To solve hunger, we must work to alleviate the symptoms of poverty and work over time to address the inequalities that allow it to persist. To do this, we structure our work into three interacting approaches.

Health and Food Programs: Our Health & Food initiatives are broad efforts to increase access to healthy and culturally-relevant foods in order to prevent negative health outcomes and to strengthen regional food systems. In the past fiscal year, we distributed 69,892,340 pounds of food sacramento food bank clothes closet within and outside of our service area. Over 46 million pounds of which was fresh fruits and vegetables. 39 million pounds of food was distributed in southern Arizona alone. 54% of that distributed in southern Arizona was through our mobile distribution sites and our locations in Tucson, Amado, Green Valley, Marana, Willcox, and Nogales, while 46% was distributed through our network of 385 partner agencies. 292,435 senior meals and 99,985 community meals were distributed through our Caridad Community Kitchen, 16,491 unique children were served through our child nutrition programs, and 166,698 unique individuals were served through our two major USDA programs: The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).Health disparities can largely be attributed to unequal access to healthy foods, in which socio- economic factors such as race, gender, income, and location of residence play a role. In the past fiscal community food bank country club, we gave over $90,000 in monetary grants to partner organizations to improve their services related to food distribution. For food insecure populations, lack of access to healthy food often results in a wide variety of negative health outcomes like increased incidence and prevalence of diabetes, poor management of certain behavioral conditions, and social isolation.Our health and food efforts work across our service area to provide nutritious, culturally relevant foods to those who are experiencing hunger and adverse health outcomes. Our community health care partnerships help advance regional policy and has the potential to inform national policy.

Educational Programs: We believe resources and opportunities are inequitably distributed between communities, and that education can help build a bridge out of poverty toward improved socio-economic conditions. Our education initiatives promote learning and social connection through the facilitation of skill building, engagement, career readiness, and leadership development. In the past fiscal year, we gave over $268,000 in monetary capacity-building grants to partner organizations. 26 culinary students were trained in our culinary kitchen, totaling 7,086 hours. Our Marana Resource Center has taught 335 students in areas such as cooking, GED, and gardening. Our Farm to Child program has educated 780 children to create and tend to school gardens, and has trained over 31,500 hours in the area of garden and nutrition.Our education efforts, based on the expressed needs of the community served, build confidence and teach skills that are technical, communicative, and transformative. Our efforts are grounded in the principles of cultural relevancy, self-determination, and social inclusion. 1,939 adults and 520 families participated in nutrition and health education and school pantry nutrition education projects, we provided 2,300 hours of skills and leadership education to 200 partner institutions, and we provided 34 cooking demos at our weekly farmer's markets.

Community Development Programs: We believe hunger and poverty are outcomes of broader systems and local policies that create a sense of powerlessness, resource inequity, and issues of under or over representation. Our community development work focuses on groups, organizations, and governments to create opportunities for change in these systems. We use initiatives that increase the capacity, engagement, and self-determination of community members and organizations to determine, enact, and sustain solutions to systemic problems and local issues. We recognized $15,000 in SNAP-match sales at farmer's markets and assisted 150 local producers to engage in economic opportunities. We saw $311,000 generated through local food sales, which equated to $580,000 generated in the local economy.Within our community development efforts, we engage in three key tasks: empowerment, capacity building, and resilience. Through funding, technical assistance, and leadership development, we help to build resilient groups that are better able to weather storms and maintain healthy communities as new leaders develop and new needs arise.

    I would love to say thank you, BUT: All the milk was expired by a day. All (like 6 packages) of hot dog buns were expired by a month or more. and the 2 big bags of potatoes were ALL mushy. if you need food for humans, look community food bank country club

Tulsa Chef Leaves Country Club Behind To Feed The Hungry

It's hard to imagine a higher calling than helping feed hungry children. One local man was so inspired by the work done at the community food bank, it's changed his life.

Jeff Marlow started his career as a chef training at a country club in Duncan then worked his way to Tulsa's Forest Ridge.

"From there, I worked over at Pinnacle bank atm near me Hills Country Club, under Devin Levine, and he's the living legend," said chef Jeff Marlow.

That experience landed him his dream job as executive chef at yet another Tulsa country club, The Oaks.

"All I've ever done is private country clubs before I came here to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma," Marlow said.

That's right. Marlow traded in the country club life for a job at the Food Bank.

"My heart's always been here, and the opportunity came to where a position opened up here - and I said, why not," said chef Jeff Marlow.

But after almost two months on the job, Jeff Marlow has no regrets. In fact, community food bank country club bursting with ideas to help get more healthy food into the hands, and stomachs, of those in need.

"We're going to start packaging fresh vegetables and sending them to pantries so people can take these frozen vegetables home and create a meal themselves," he said.

To supplement the fresh veggies donated to the Food Bank, Marlow's expanding the garden and filling up his freezer space.

"We've got 40 tomato plants; we have okra, squash, zucchini, bell peppers," he said.

He's even working on a cookbook to help people put together easy, healthy, low cost meals.

"My goal here is to just feed more and more people," said Community Food Bank chef Jeff Marlow.

Life at the food bank may not be as glitzy as a country club - and the pay check may be not be as big - but Jeff Marlow is confident that what he receives, is something even more important.

"At the end of the day, I think its not all about the money, it's about what you get out of life, what you're doing," he said. "I'm saving the world one tomato at a time, you know?"

Food Pantries

Our food pantries have served thousands of families in communities throughout the San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties. Since March of 2020, more than 10,000 households in San Francisco rely on our 17 food pantries for their weekly groceries as well as the connection with our staff and volunteers. 

Seniors, families and any individual struggling with food insecurity have one less thing to worry about when they receive a bag of groceries and supplies at one of our Food Pantry locations. We serve more than 6,970 at our Food Pantries each week.

Throughout San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties our most vulnerable youth, adults, families and seniors are facing an increased threat of food insecurity. For many of our neighbors, increased joblessness and suspended access to food support services like free school lunch programs mean more mouths to feed with fewer resources. Now more than ever, our food pantry services are in high demand. To meet this increased need, we have expanded our food distribution programs to serve more than 2800 community members and families at 11 locations.
