6 Things Know Before Starting a Chase College Checking Account

Whether you’re just starting college or have been hitting the books for a few years, if you don’t have a checking account, it’s a good idea to set one up. Checking accounts make it easy to handle your personal finances, including check deposits, bill payments and making online purchases. It’s also safer to carry around a debit card instead of cash — if the former gets stolen, you can immediately shut down the card to prevent further losses.

Having a checking account also makes it easier to track your spending since you can view your account balance and all of your transactions and debit card purchases online or on your monthly statement. If you decide you’d still like some cash in your pocket, it’s easy to withdraw money from your account at any time with an ATM machine or by getting cash back during purchases.

Since college students often have very different financial habits and concerns than adults who have entered the workforce, many banks offer checking accounts designed for college students. The Chase College Checking account is just one example. In this article, we cover six things you need to know if you’re considering opening a student checking account through Chase bank.

Eligibility Requirements for Chase College Checking Accounts

Chase College Checking is for college students who are 17 to 24 years old. (Note that if you are still in high school, you can instead opt for a Chase High School Checking account, which you can convert to a college checking account once you matriculate.)

The basic eligibility requirements for a Chase College Checking account are as follows:

  • Account opening online requires your Social Security number, a driver’s license or state-issued ID, and your contact information.
  • To open a new account at a Chase branch location, you will need to bring two forms of ID, such as a Social Security card, taxpayer identification number (TIN), driver’s license with photo or a student ID with photo.
  • You’ll also need proof of your college/university student status and expected graduation date. Something like a transcript or an acceptance letter works.
  • If you are not a U.S. student, you can still open a Chase College Checking account in any Chase branch as long as you have a passport with photo and the Student INS I-20 or ICE I-20 form or DS-2019 form. Non-U.S. students still need to supply a residential address (U.S. or foreign) and proof of student status.

If you’re unsure whether the documents you have can be used as proof of identification or student status, contact your local Chase branch and ask for clarification. There are no credit score requirements. When you open your account, you will be given an account number information, a visa debit card and a pin number.

Pros and Cons of Chase College Checking Accounts

Like all banking options, there are pros and cons that may make more or less of a difference depending on your situation, needs and so on. For example, you’ll want to consider if there are any monthly fees, overdraft fees and ATM fees that might apply when using a non-Chase ATM, minimum deposit requirements and more.

The following outlines some specific pros and cons of a new Chase College Checking account, which you can use to compare Chase’s offering with other banks.

Pros of Chase College Checking

Aside from being a checking account designed with college students in mind, Chase College Checking includes the following additional benefits and perks:

  • Chase bank branch offices are easy to find. There are more than 4,700 branches nationwide and a Chase bank ATM network that is 16,000 machines strong.
  • The monthly service fee for Chase College Checking accounts is $0 for up to five years if you are a student between the ages of 17 and 24.
  • Chase offers online and mobile banking, including the ability to deposit checks via the Chase mobile app, which means you can bank from just about anywhere.
  • You can open a linked Chase savings account for free and use it to save money and as overdraft protection.
  • Customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, not just during business hours or on business days. This makes it easy to get help with your account on your schedule.
  • Opening a Chase College Checking account helps you establish a banking history with Chase bank. This can come in handy down the road when you apply for loans or want to apply for a Chase credit card.
  • Other services offered with a Chase College Checking account include free online bill pay and text banking.

Cons of Chase College Checking

Because there are two sides to every coin, there are some negatives to consider when considering a Chase College Checking account, including the following:

  • Although Chase bank has thousands of branch offices located around the country, it isn’t located in every state. Chase bank has branch offices in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
  • If you want a checkbook to make check payments, this comes with an additional fee.
  • Chase College Checking accounts don’t pay interest.
  • If you use a non-Chase ATM, you will be charged ATM fees, and Chase bank doesn’t offer ATM fee reimbursement like some banks do.

Chase College Checking Service Fees

In banking, service fees or account fees are fees charged to your bank account to cover services offered by the bank. For example, you might be charged a service fee for using an ATM, transferring money or setting up an account. Some banks also charge monthly service fees, sometimes called maintenance fees, that might be waived if certain conditions are met.

While Chase College Checking charges no fees on a monthly basis for up to five years while you’re in school, after graduation, your account will convert to a Chase Total Checking account, and a monthly maintenance fee of $6 applies. However, this fee can be waived for each month that the following conditions are met:

  • You make at least one direct deposit during the month.
  • Your average daily balance is at least $5,000.

While there are no monthly service fees while you’re in college, you might be charged fees at non-Chase ATMs, or for money orders or cashier’s checks. You will also be charged an Insufficient Funds Fee of $34 each time you overdraw your account, unless you set up overdraft protection with a linked Chase Savings account.

Chase College Checking Minimum Balances

Some banks require that you maintain a minimum balance in your checking account to keep the account and avoid additional fees. There are many reasons a bank might require a minimum balance.

For example, requiring minimum balances on accounts ensures the bank has a certain amount of cash at its disposal, which allows it to fund withdrawals, lend money and meet certain financial regulations. The bank may also invest this money to add to its profit margin. When minimum balances are not maintained, banks can also profit from the fees charged.

The good news about Chase College Checking accounts are that they have no minimum balance requirements. This makes them perfect for students who may have limited financial resources while attending school.

Chase College Checking Signup Bonuses

New customers who open a Chase College Checking account may qualify for a $100 signup bonus. That’s free money you don’t have to pay back. There are some stipulations, however.

To qualify for the bonus, you must complete 10 qualifying transactions within 60 days of account opening. Qualifying transactions include the following:

  • Chase debit card purchases
  • Online bill payment
  • Paying with a check
  • Using Chase QuickDeposit to make a deposit
  • Using the Zelle app to send or transfer money
  • Paying with ACH credits

This offer is only good until 7/14/2021, so if you’re reading this after that date, check the Chase College Checking website to see if any new offers are available.

Is Chase College Checking Right for You?

Only you can decide if you’d like to become a Chase customer. You may want to take some time comparing different college checking accounts before making a final decision, but many college students choose Chase College Checking because Chase is a well-known and trusted banking institution, their accounts have no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements, and they are convenient and easy to use.

How Counter Checks Work

Checks don’t fit in well with today’s instant-access world: When you're running low, you must order them several weeks in advance so they can be printed with your information on them. But if you’re in a pinch after having run out of checks before your new ones arrive, you can often get several instant counter checks from your bank to meet your temporary need.

A teller or personal banker can print counter checks for you. They will have your account information on them, so they work just like regular checks. Your ABA routing number and account number appear on the bottom of each check in that familiar computerized MICR font. Some banks include your name and address as well, but for the most part, these checks are very basic, and merchants can usually tell when you’re using a counter check.

When you first open an account at a bank, you will probably be given several counter checks to get you started before your official checks arrive.

Pros and Cons of Using Counter Checks

What We Like
  • Get paper checks right away without waiting for an order to arrive

  • Easy to get by visiting your bank branch

What We Don't Like
  • Banks may charge a printing fee of up to $2 per check

  • Banks often issue only a few counter checks at a time

  • Merchants might be suspicious of counter checks because the check number must be written in by hand

Instant access: The main benefit of a counter check is that you have what you need—a check—with a trip to the branch. Instead of waiting for a shipment of checks, you can start writing checks right away.

Cost and limits: Banks usually charge a small fee to print checks at the branch, so expect to pay roughly $1 to $2 dollars per check. Also, you can only get a few checks at a time; you’re not going to walk out with 50 checks.

Suspicious merchants: If you’re planning to make a payment with one of these checks, be aware that merchants don’t always want to accept counter checks as payment. Even if the bank prints your personal information on the check, counter checks usually don’t have a check number, which is a strong signal to merchants that the check is a counter check. Merchants might fear that you’ve opened a brand new account (which signals greater risk for them) or that you’re using a poorly made counterfeit check.

How to Get Counter Checks

Visit your bank or credit union’s branch to request a counter check. Before you make a trip to the branch, call and make sure counter checks are available there. Find out what the process is and whether you need to use any particular branch. Of course, if you use an online-only bank, you can’t get counter checks because there is no branch to visit.

Once at the branch, ask the teller or personal banker to print the checks, show your ID, and complete any other steps required by the bank. You should have your checks in-hand in just a few minutes.

How to Fill Out Counter Checks

Writing a check with a counter check is the same as using any other check:

  1. Write the date in the upper-right corner.
  2. Write the name of your payee on the line next to “Pay to the order of.”
  3. Write the amount of the check in numeric form in the box on the right.
  4. Write the amount using words on the line under the payee line.
  5. Include a “memo” or any reference information if you like.
  6. Sign the check near the bottom-right corner.

You might also need to write your personal information on the check, usually in the upper-left hand corner. Again, some banks print those details for you. If not, whoever you’re writing the check to will probably want to know how to contact you if any problems arise. For example, they may require you to provide your name and phone number at a minimum. Retailers often want your address and driver’s license number as well.

How to Use Fewer Checks

If you’re out of checks, and you find yourself in this situation often, try to use fewer checks.

Although counter checks are helpful, it takes time to go to the branch, and it’s less expensive to order checks from a printer.

To use fewer checks, take advantage of technology:

  • Sign up for automatic payments via ACH for recurring monthly payments like utility bills and insurance premiums.
  • Use your bank’s online bill payment system. Your bank will pay electronically or mail a check so you don’t have to.
  • Spend with your debit card instead of writing checks at merchants. Better yet, use a credit card and pay it off every month.
  • Repay your friends with online services and apps for sending money.

Cashier's Checks

Counter checks are not the same as cashier’s checks, which are also checks that your bank prints on demand. Cashier’s checks are for “cleared” or guaranteed funds, and they have payee information printed on them. Counter checks are not for guaranteed payments, and the payee information must be filled in.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does a counter check cost?

Fees vary, but you can expect to pay a few dollars for counter checks. For example, Chase charges $2 per page of three checks.

What is the fastest way to get checks?

Counter checks may be the fastest way for you to get checks. If you have the proper type of printer and paper, you may be able to print them from home. If you don't live near a bank branch, local printing companies can also help.

Here is a basic rundown of the types of fees charged for savings accounts, checking accounts, overdraft and more:

Savings Accounts

The basic monthly fee for a Chase saving account is $5. However, saving account fees are waived if you have a savings account that is tied to a Premier Plus or Premier Platinum checking account. You can also get the saving account fees waived if you have a minimum daily balance of $300 or more or if you have an automatic repeating transfer of $25 or more into the savings account each month. If you have a Chase savings account and you are under 18 years old, there is no monthly service fee.

Checking Accounts

Chase Total Checking accounts have a $12 monthly fee for everyone except students. Students pay a Chase monthly checking account fee of $6. Total Checking account fees can be waived if you have a daily balance of $1500 or more. You can also get the monthly fee waived if you have more than $500 in Direct Deposits each month into the account. The third way to avoid paying the monthly fee is to maintain $5000 or more in deposits or investments across several Chase accounts.

The Chase Premier Plus checking account comes with a $25 monthly fee. Customers can get that waived by maintaining a daily balance of $15,000. The monthly fee can also be waived if you have a Chase first mortgage and you are enrolled in automatic payments on that mortgage.

The monthly service fee for a Chase Premier Platinum account is also $25. That fee is waived if you maintain a daily balance of $75,000 or more.

Chase ATM Fees

Chase doesn’t charge an ATM fee if customers use any of the 16,000 network ATMs. There is a $2.50 fee per transaction to use any ATM that isn’t in the Chase network within the United States. Using an international ATM that isn’t in the Chase network will cost $5 per withdrawal and $2.50 for a balance inquiry or to transfer money. Those are on top of any fees that the ATM owner charges. The ATM withdrawal limit is $1000 per day.

Overdraft And Insufficient Funds Fees

Chase overdraft fees are $34 per item that is returned or has insufficient funds. Items that are less than $5 or overdraw the account by less than $5 won’t be charged the $34 fee. Up to three overdraft charges can be assessed per day. In addition to the $34 overdraft fee per item if the account stays overdrawn for more than five days there is an additional $15 charge every five days called an extended overdraft fee.

Penalties and Withdrawal Limits

If you have a Chase savings account there are withdrawal limits you need to know about. If you make more than six withdrawals from your savings account in a month, Chase will charge a $5 fee, and they will also automatically change your savings account to a checking account.

Money Basics: Managing a Checking Account

Lesson 8: Managing a Checking Account

/en/moneybasics/banking-options/content/

Managing a checking account

illustration of a debit card and a tablet showing a bank app

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Explain how to open a checking account
  • Demonstrate how to write a check
  • Demonstrate how to fill out checking account deposit and withdrawal slips
  • Demonstrate how to use an automated teller machine (ATM)

What is a checking account?

Having a checking account at a bank or financial institution allows you to write checks to pay for goods and services or to get cash. A check is a written order instructing your bank to pay money to an individual or entity.

To use checks, you must first open a checking account and make regular deposits into that account. Banks offer several types of checking accounts. Here are some of the most common checking options:

  • A basic checking account is for someone who primarily wants to use checks to pay bills or everyday expenses. To avoid fees, some banks require a low minimum balance.
  • An interest-bearing account requires a higher balance, and interest is usually paid monthly. A minimum deposit is typically required to open this type of account.
  • A joint checking account is for two or more people who are typically in the same household.

Visit banks to learn more about the types of checking accounts they offer, and decide which one best fits your needs or the needs of your household.

Opening a checking account

Compare services at different banks before opening a checking account, and decide which account best meets your needs.

To open a checking account:

  1. Visit the financial institution of your choice, and speak to a customer service agent about opening a checking account.
  2. Bring with you:
    • Two forms of identification, including one with a picture
    • Your Social Security Number
    • Money for your first deposit in the form of cash or a check
  3. Be prepared to fill out information on a signature card that will remain on file at the bank. The bank uses the card to verify the signature on checks that bear your name. Signature cards typically include:
    • Your name
    • Your current address and length of time at the address
    • Your previous address and length of time at that address
    • The type of account, such as single or joint
    • Your signature
  4. Once your account is approved, you can make your first deposit.

Getting your checks

illustration of a check and a debit card

When you open a checking account, the bank will provide temporary checks until you order permanent ones. You can order checks from the bank or from a third-party provider. Plain checks are generally less expensive than those with fancy designs.

You may have various styles of checks from which to choose. For example, some checkbooks come with a duplicate feature. This allows you to keep a carbon copy of the checks you write for your records.

The box(es) of checks you order will be sent to you in the mail. Several checkbooks, or groups of checks, are in each box.

Your checking account number—the number your bank assigns to your checking account—and your bank's routing number appear on your checks. Your checking account number is important as you make deposits to and withdrawals from your account. The routing number simply identifies your bank.

Writing a check

Checks are convenient when you don't want to carry around a lot of cash or when you need to pay bills through the mail. Take a few minutes to review the parts of a check:

check with parts labeled

To write a check:

  1. Enter the date at the top of the check.
  2. Write the name of the company or person you are paying money to in the Pay to the Order of line.
  3. At the end of the Pay to the Order of line, write the number amount of the check (for example, $25 or $48.28).
  4. On the dollars line, write the check amount in words. This confirms the number amount (for example, forty-eight dollars and 28/100). Note that you can write the cents as a fraction.
  5. If there is blank space left after you write in the amount, draw a line out to the end—stopping before the word "dollars"—so no one can add to the amount (for example, forty-eight dollars and 28/100-----------------------dollars).
  6. Write your signature on the line at the lower-right corner of your check.
  7. In the Memo or For section in the bottom-left corner, write what the check is for (for example, "jeans for John" or "rent").

Print out a blank printable check and practice filling it out.

Deposit slips

A deposit slip is a written order to your bank instructing it to put funds into your account. You can use a deposit slip to put money such as cash, checks, and money orders into your account.

Be sure to endorse or sign any check that had been made payable to you before you deposit it. On the back of the check, there is a place for your endorsement, or signature.

Deposit slips vary from bank to bank. Here's an example:

deposit slip with parts labeled

To fill out a deposit slip:

  1. List the amount of money you want to deposit. Most slips have separate lines for cash and checks.
  2. For example, add $30 (cash) and $450.55 (check).
  3. Enter the subtotal. In this case, it's $480.55.
  4. Enter any amount you want back. In this case, it's 0.
  5. Enter the Total. In this case, it's $480.55.
  6. Sign the deposit slip.
  7. Take the slip and the money you want to deposit to a teller at your bank. You also can make deposits using an ATM if you have an ATM card. You'll learn about using an ATM later in this lesson.

Print out a printable deposit slipto practice filling it in by hand.

If you want to cash a check and not deposit it, remember to sign the back of the check.

Visit Deposit in our Everyday Life section to practice endorsing a check and filling out a deposit slip.

Withdrawal slips

A withdrawal slip is a written order to your bank instructing it to withdraw funds from your account. Withdrawal slips vary from bank to bank.

Here's an example:

check with parts labeled

To fill out a withdrawal slip:

  1. List the amount of money you want to withdraw (for example, $50).
  2. Sign the withdrawal slip.
  3. Take the slip a teller at your bank, or withdraw money using an ATM.

Print out a to printable withdrawal slip to practice filling it in by hand.

Keeping track of your account

As you write checks or make deposits, keep track of the amount of money remaining in your account. Your bank or financial institution will send you a monthly statement or list of the various withdrawals and deposits made on your account. If you have an ATM card, you can also access this type of information at an ATM. You can also access your account status at any time if you bank online.

To keep a current record of your checking account, use your check register. This tool usually comes with your checkbook.

When your bank statement arrives, compare it with your check register. Balance or reconcile your account by figuring out the amount of money you deposited, the amount you spent, and the amount you have left. Basic accounting software such as Quicken can also help you balance your checkbook.

Avoid writing bad checks

Don't write checks if you don't have enough money in your account. The consequences can be damaging.

  • Your bank and the business you wrote the check to may each charge you a fee of about $25.
  • You may be placed on a bad check list, and businesses may refuse to accept your checks.
  • Your bank may close your account, and other banks may be alerted.
  • You could face criminal charges if authorities can prove criminal intent.

Automated teller machines and ATM cards

An ATM card looks like a credit card. Because it is linked to your bank account(s), you can use it to get cash, deposit funds, and check account balances at an automated teller machine (ATM). ATMs are convenient because they are available 24 hours a day at different locations.

A debit card combines the functions of an ATM card and a check. It can be used like a check. Most banks issue a combination ATM/debit card. Aside from an ATM card or debit card, you can also use a credit card—which is linked to your credit card account—at an ATM.

To use an ATM, you need a personal identification number (PIN). A bank or financial institution issues this four-digit number to you to protect against anyone else using your card. You must have a PIN and password to access online banking services. Always safeguard such information.

Visit ATM in our Everyday Life section to practice using an ATM.

Operating an ATM

illustration of an ATM card being inserted into an ATM

ATMs may differ in appearance. However, they operate in the same basic way.

To use an ATM:

  • Insert your ATM, debitcard, or credit card into a slot on the machine.
  • You may be asked to select English or Spanish.
  • Using the machine's number keypad, Enter your PIN.
  • Press Enter.
  • Select your transaction—for example, Withdrawal, Deposit, Transfer Funds, or Account Balance.
  • Another list of choices appears based on your transaction. For example, you may need to select which account you want to withdraw or deposit funds to, or which account you want to transfer money from and which one you want to transfer money to.
  • You will also need to select or enter the amount of money you want to withdraw or deposit. If you are making a deposit, you will have to put the amount into a deposit envelope and insert it into a slot on the machine.
  • Your transaction will be processed. For example, if you made a withdrawal the machine will issue you cash.
  • Your card will be returned to you, and a receipt will be printed if you requested one. Don't forget your card!

How To Order Checks From Chase

Banking / Checking Account

Although Americans make an increasing number of payments electronically, it doesn’t mean the use of checks has disappeared. Many checking account holders — including those at Chase — still use checks to pay bills and still need to order new checks when they run low. Fortunately, Chase customers can order checks through a simple process online. The information below should guide you through the process and answer many of your questions:

How To Order Checks From Chase

As with most banks, the quickest way to obtain Chase checks is online. Chase offers a simple process no matter which method you choose.

Customers who want to order checks online should first log in to their accounts at Chase’s website. Once you have access to your account, click on “More…”. Under this menu, select “Order checks and deposit slips.”

One thing to keep in mind is that Chase uses Deluxe as its check provider. Chase encourages customers with business checking accounts to visit Deluxe’s website directly.

How Much Does It Cost To Order Checks?

The cost for ordering checks depends on the type of account you have at Chase as well as the check features you choose and where you choose to buy them. Read on for a closer look at costs.

How Much Does It Cost To Order Checks From Chase?

A box of 100 checks starts at $20 for customers with a Chase Total Checking account. The cost might also depend on the type of checks ordered. According to Chase Customer Service, it takes 10 to 14 days to receive checks, though some types of checks can be delivered faster for an additional fee.

Customers also have ways of receiving free checks. The Chase Premier Plus Checking account provides free checks if you choose Chase design checks. If you opt for the Chase Sapphire Checking account, the company provides checks free of charge for both Chase design and personal design checks.

Customers should note that these free checks come with requirements. Those with a Premier Plus account must have an average beginning day balance of $15,000 across all linked Chase accounts or a linked qualifying Chase first mortgage with automatic payments. Customers who fall short of these requirements must pay a $25 per month fee. Sapphire account holders must have $75,000 deposited across all linked Chase accounts or face a similar $25 monthly charge.

Alternative Providers

Though Chase and other banks don’t encourage doing this, you can also buy checks from other sources.

Companies such as Costco, Vistaprint and Walmart offer check printing services. All offer a wide variety of designs at various costs. To ensure your order is safe and protected, check for security features such as the “Padlock icon” developed by the Check Payment Systems Association.

Here are a few additional details:

  • Costco: If you’re interested in large orders, Costco offers 492 checks for as little as $18.96 ($15.17 for executive members) through Harland Clarke check printing.
  • Vistaprint: Costs start at $4.00 for a set of 25 checks.
  • Walmart: Costs start at $8.46 for a pack of 150.

Technically, you can also print your own checks, but these must meet a strict set of criteria such as using paper stock and dimensions that conform to industry standards. The checks must also include the Magnetic Ink Character Recognition line that bears all of the information of a Chase MICR line, including your routing number and account number. They must also represent your information accurately and bear the legend stating, “This is a legal copy of your check.”

Checks that don’t conform to these standards will bounce. For this reason, you should consider buying checks from Chase or a reputable check printing service.

What You Should Know

Since a separate company handles Chase check orders, the information you request on the checks won’t change your account information on the Chase website. In other words, if you print checks using a different address, the old address will remain in Chase’s system unless you contact Chase directly. To make address changes to the system, go to the “Change of Address” section in the “Customer Center” page.

Familiarizing yourself with Chase’s check ordering process and rules can help ensure your checks are accurate and secure.

How can I get free or discounted checks for my bank account?

First, if you live in/around a reasonably populated urban area, and you're in the United States, I can't see why you would choose to bank with Chase, B of A, or another large commercial bank. I think you would be much better served by banking at a reasonably large credit union.

There are many differences between banks and credit unions, but in a nutshell, credit unions are owned by the members, and operate primarily to provide benefits to their members, whereas a bank is owned by the shareholders, and operates primarily to make profits for the shareholders (not to benefit the customers). The banking industry absolutely hates the credit unions, so if you've ever been nickeled-and-dimed with this fee and that charge by your bank, I have to ask why you're still banking with a company that irritates you and/or actively tries to screw how to set up pin for wells fargo debit card out of your money?

I live in California, and I've banked at credit unions almost exclusively since I started working nearly 30 years ago. Every time I've strayed and started banking at a for-profit bank, I've regretted it.

For example, a few years ago I opened a checking account at a now-defunct bank (WaMu) just for online use: eBay and so forth. It was a free checking account. When Chase bought WaMu, the account became a Chase account, and it seemed that every other statement brought new fees, new restrictions, and so forth. I finally closed it when they imposed some stupid fee for not carrying enough of a balance. I found out by logging in to their Web site and seeing a balance of zero dollars; they had imposed the fee a few statements back, and I had missed it, so they kept debiting my account until it was empty.

At this point, I do about 90% of my banking at a fairly large credit union. I have a mortgage with a big bank, but that was out of my hands, as the lender/originator sold the mortgage and I had no say in the matter. My credit union has a highly functional Web site, permits me to download my account activity to Quicken, and even has mobile apps which island in the keys has the best beaches allow me to deposit a check by taking a picture of it, or check my account activity, etc.

They (my credit union) are part of a network of other credit unions, so as long as I am using a network ATM, I never pay a fee.

In sum, I can't see any reason to go with a bank.

Regarding checks, I write a small number of checks per year, but I recently needed to reorder them. My credit union refers members directly to Harland-Clarke, a major-league player in the check printing business. Four boxes of security checks was around $130 plus shipping, which is not small money. However, I was able to order the very same checks via Costco for less than half home loan investment bank providence ri amount. Costco refers members to a check printing service, which is chase order checks free front/subsidiary of Harland-Clarke, and using a promo code, plus the discount given for my Costco membership, I got four boxes of security checks shipped to me for less than $54.

My advice would be to look around. If you're a Costco member, use their check printing service. Wal*mart offers a similar service to anyone, as does Sam's Club, and you can search around to find other similar services.

Bottom line, if you order your checks via your bank or credit union, chances are you will pay full retail. Shop around, and save a bit.

I've not opened a new account at a credit union in some time, but I would not be surprised if a credit union offered a free box of checks when you open a new account with them.

It’s also safer to carry around a debit card instead of cash — if the former gets stolen, you can immediately shut down the card to prevent further losses.

Having a checking account also makes it easier to track your spending since you can view your account balance and all of your transactions and debit card purchases online or on your monthly statement.

(Note that if you are still in high school, you can instead opt for a Carlisle food bank volunteer High School Checking account, which you can convert to a college checking account once you matriculate.)

Chase bank has branch offices in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Checkbook lets you email anyone a digital check and deposit it free

If you’re sick of running out of paper checks and stamps or hassling with routing numbers to send zero-fee payments, you can bank on Checkbook. The startup today launches its digital check service where you can send anyone a check with just their email address, and they can deposit it immediately online to get their money or even print it out.

What’s remarkable is that it’s totally free for individuals to send up chase order checks free 50 checks a year, and for businesses, it’s just $1 per check. That’s exceedingly cheap and easy.

Checkbook Receive Check

With paper checks, you have to keep a deck of them on hand plus pay for envelopes and postage. Credit card payments can cost 2.9%. And for businesses it can cost between $7 and $16 to send a check, and $1.50 just to receive one, according to Aberdeen Group, Bank of America, and the AFP Payment Cost Benchmarking Report.

With over 19 billion checks for over $30 trillion sent in 2013, B2B checks cost businesses $25 billion a year. Yet conducting the money transfers over the traditional banking backend costs Checkbook merely pennies each time. It’s one of those classic startup businesses where you just wouldn’t expect that tech could cut prices so low.

Ditch Routing Numbers And Fees

“I was sending you a check while you were talking” Checkbook founder PJ Gupta tells me. Sure enough, I open my email, and there it is. I can login with my bank and deposit it instantly, or print it out and deposit it at the bank or ATM like any normal check. Checkbook effectively makes sending checks as quick as Venmo or PayPal, but without fees even when you pay large amounts to businesses.

How Checkbook works

Gupta figured out how to build Checkbook on top of the existing ACH payments and Check21 infrastructure because he was the chief architect of Visa’s network. “This is a 100-year old problem no one was solving”Gupta insists.

The business model works a bit like Dropbox in the sense that Checkbook gives away its service to consumers in hopes of infiltrating businesses that it will charge. Rather than try to sell Checkbook’s convenience to companies one at a time, it hopes to gain viral traction and parlay that into real customers. That opportunity attracted a seed round from Boost.vc, Rocketship.vc, AngelList’s founders, and a slew of angels including Tim Draper.

While there are ways to send checks online already like eChecks, they’re cumbersome because you can’t easily deposit them online instantly too. You’re essentially passing the chore on to the recipient. Checkbook deposits can clear as quickly as a day, but are sometimes delayed to four days if there is any suspicion about the sender and their funds.

Mixing Consumer Ease And Business Security

Keeping security locked tight will be critical for Checkbook. A breach could be disastrous. The somewhat janky design doesn’t scream “Legitimate!”, so that should get a refresh. Checkbook will also have to convince businesses it’s not just a consumer service, but one robust enough for them too.

Checkbook Dashboard

The startup is adding to its integrations for shopping carts on Magento and major accounting packages like QuickBooks as it raises a Series A. It also has a business API for those pushing and pulling tons of checks. Next, Checkbook wants to build plugins for accounts payable and accounts receivable.

If Checkbook does its job, no one will ever have to pay their rent late because there’s no dead tree to sign, or demand someone’s banking info just to send them cash.
