Really looking forward to graduating beyond these sub-prime card companies and their poor customer service.

 

I've been trying my best to pay my credit card balances off each month and Merrick Bank makes it impossible to have a zero balance because they are charging me $3/month for my annual fee. Every month, my credit report shows a $3 balance because they tack on the $3 fee at the same time the statement is generated. This wouldn't be a problem if I could pay $3 more than I owe that month and end up with a zero balance after the $3 fee, but the website won't accept payments exceeding the current balance.

 

I called customer service and first asked if I could have my annual fee waived... I was told that they couldn't do that. Then I asked if I could pay my annual fee in full and explained why I didn't want my balance to be reported as $3 each month. The customer service rep had the nerve to tell me that, "the purpose of the card is to use it."

 

Don't tell me what the purpose of my card is!!! I didn't say that, but his statement isn't even true! If I want to use the card for emergencies only, or to rent a car, or use it to pick my teeth after a meal... that's up to me! Ironically, I do use the card, quite often, and I pay the balance in full each month. Once I explained that, he told me that having a $3 balance wouldn't hurt my credit and the only way I could avoid having that balance show up every month is to send a check to Merrick Bank that would exceed the balance owed.

 

In my opinion, whether having the $3 balance would or would not hurt my credit is not for the customer service rep to analyze. If I don't want that balance to show up for the duration of the time that I'm a cardholder (since I figure they won't be discontinuing my annual fee anytime soon), there should be some way to satisfy me as a customer.  This may work out in my favor once all of my other credit cards are at a zero balance because I've heard that your FICO can actually be higher with one card carrying a small balance, but this month my Orchard Bank card reported a silly $8 balance from accrued interest and I'm tired of my FICO Report breakdown telling me that I have too many revolving account open that carry a balance. I'm pretty sure that notification doesn't account for balance amount, just the fact that there is a balance.

 

Anyhow, the Merrick Bank customer service rep told me to mail a check for $30 more than my current balance. That would create a Credit Balance and solve my issue. I told him, what if I use the card... since that's the purpose of having the card... and bought a $40 shirt next month. Now I will owe $10. I'd be stuck in the same position I was in the previous month. I can't pay $13 online, so every single month I'd have to mail a check to Merrick Bank to create a Credit Balance. The CSR said, "I'm sorry, that's all we can do for you. If you aren't satisfied, you are welcome to close your account."

 

That's what I call "great service"! (not really)

 

I asked to speak with a manager... not because I was angry or even dissatisfied... I just figured that I'd inform someone that could possibly relay my inconvenience to a decision-maker so the company would know how frustrating it is to have an annual fee taken from your account on a monthly basis without even being given the choice or opportunity to pay the whole $36 in one lump sum. I was told that the manager couldn't do anything for me and was going to tell me the exact same thing. I still wanted to let her know how I felt, so I waited on hold. And waited, and waited... until a female manager picked up the phone, didn't care about my concern, told me that I'd have to mail a check every month and then the call dropped. I didn't bother calling back.

 

Perhaps it's much ado about nothing. I've paid my other balances down and the Merrick Bank Visa will be the card that reports the small balance each month for the sake of boosting my FICO score. As I said before, I'm looking forward to applying for some solid cards with great reputations in the near future.

 

Thanks for listening to my rant... any suggestions to circumventing Merrick Bank's silly $3 reporting each month would be much appreciated.

Consumer Financial Services Law Monitor

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has ordered Merrick Bank to pay $16.1 million to settle charges related to the marketing of a credit card add-on product. According to the terms of the settlement agreement, Merrick will pay a $1.1 million penalty and $15 million in restitution costs stemming from violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act.

At issue in the case is a third-party service called the “PAYS Plan,” which was designed to provide monthly credit payments during unexpected life events such as unemployment or hospitalization.  The benefit plan was marketed to Merrick’s credit card customers between 2008 and 2013.  The FDIC charged Merrick with misrepresenting the plan’s protections for consumer credit ratings.  It also accused the bank of failing to disclose the terms and conditions of the plan’s hospitalization benefit.

The $2 billion-asset Merrick, which is based in South Jordan, Utah, serves more than 900,000 cardholders, and also provides financing for boat and RV dealers.

Merrick Bank Backs Secure Vault Payments

Merrick Bank Corp. has signed on to offer Secure Vault Payments to merchants through its ISO network, and sources say the fledgling payment method may become available to 17 million consumers before the end of this month and to 50 million by year’s end.

When consumers click on a Secure Vault Payments button on a retailer’s website, a switch takes them to their own bank’s Web page to complete the transaction over the automated clearinghouse network. After they make the payment on their bank’s site, the system takes them back to the merchant’s site for confirmation. The process does not expose the consumer’s personal information to the retailer.

NACHA, the electronic payments association that sets ACH rules, is working with Denver-based eWise Systems USA Inc. to offer Secure Vault Payments.

“NACHA’s blessing and impetus” are bringing “credibility and structure” to the technology, convincing Merrick to become an early adopter, says Charles S. Crawford, senior vice president of business development for the South Jordan, Utah-based bank’s Merrick Merchant Services unit.

“We’ve seen a lot of interest from both ISOs and merchants” in Secure Vault Payments, adds Travis Soto, Merrick assistant treasurer and a key player in the deal to begin offering Secure Vault Payments.

In November, U.S. Bank, the nation’s fifth largest bank, became the first major consumer bank to modify its technology platform to accommodate Secure Vault Payments, the bank said in press releases.

U.S. Bank plans to complete preparations for the technology and make it available to its 17 million customers this month, says Soto.

Other major banks have committed themselves to offering Secure Vault Payments but have not announced their intentions, says Dean Seifert, eWise senior vice president, network and business development. Their participation will make the technology available to 50 million consumers by year’s end.

Systems that work the same way as Secure Vault Payments account for all online debit purchases in Canada, 60% of online purchases in the Netherlands, 60 million transactions annually in Columbia and a large number of transactions in Germany over the last three years, Seifert says.

Seifert says eWise has not been involved with those efforts abroad but has set up shop in the United Kingdom to bring the system there.

The eWise staff is working on standards that Seifert expects will enable American banks and merchants to make Secure Vault Payments transactions across the border by the end of the summer.

In the United States, the technology has a “long history,” Seifert says. NACHA has been aware of it for 10 years, had a prototype more than three years ago, started testing with universities and municipalities more than two years ago, and began promoting it heavily a year ago, after joining forces with eWise, he says.

The information-technology projects necessary for consumer banks to accept the Secure Vault Payments switch can require a year or more to complete because of backlogged work, says Crawford.

Soon, consumer banks will be touting the technology to the public, according to Seifert, because they will receive a cut of the margin on each transaction. Once consumers learn about the technology, they may take an interest, sources say.

“For a certain type of consumer concerned about online security, it may be worth adopting,” David Fish, a senior analyst for Maynard, Mass.-based Mercator Advisory Group Inc., says of the technology.

Consumers also benefit because Secured Vault Payments transactions require an average of 15 seconds, compared with about a minute to enter credit card data on a site, Seifert says.

How much merchants would pay for such transactions has not been established because the technology has not become widespread, sources say. However the fees appear likely to fall short of credit card fees, especially on big-ticket purchases, sources say. Payments made with the technology to utilities and government agencies could be subject to fees of less than $1 per transaction, says Soto.

The Federal Reserve Board, which has proposed capping debit card interchange fees at 12 cents, could undercut Secured Vault Payment, he notes.

Merchants benefit because they transfer all of the charge-back risk to the consumer banks that authenticate the purchases. That could bring a sigh of relief for merchants on big-ticket purchases, Soto notes.

Getting the word out to merchants could fall to ISOs and agents, a process Merrick Bank says it is launching with its deal with NACHA and eWise.

What sets the Bank Double Your Line™ Secured Visa apart from other secured cards is that you can get a $200 credit limit increase — without making an additional deposit. All you have to do is pay your balance on time for seven consecutive months after you open your account. As far as we know, no other secured card offers this.

On the downside, the card comes with an annual fee of $36 for the first year and then $3 per month, which is also $36 annually. But it will show up within 60 days of your 3rd on-time payment. Applied for the card, i hit submit and the screen wernt blank back to credit karma login page, i log back in and have no idea what happened with the card. I recieved no info whether i was approved or declined. I got hit with a hard inquiry so i know they recieved it, i look today less than 24 hours later and now im a poor chance at approval for the same card. Absolutely ridiculous and it hurts my credit. Call the bank to try and see what the issue is and if i was even approved and ive been on the phone for 25 minutes waiting on hold.

2Collateral Account for the TD Cash Secured Credit Card: In order to establish and maintain the Secured Card account (the “Credit Card Account”), and in consideration of the issuance of the Credit Pay merrick bank credit card Account, you must establish and maintain an individual TD Bank savings account (the “Collateral Account”) that you designate to secure repayment of your Credit Card Account in your name, and you must grant us a security interest in the funds in the Collateral Account. The minimum credit limit for the Credit Card Account is $300, and you must deposit and maintain an amount up to your Credit Card Account credit limit in the Collateral Account within fifteen (15) business days from approval (if your account is approved). The amount you deposit up to your approved credit limit within fifteen (15) business days from approval will be your credit limit for your Credit Card Account. You may not make any withdrawals from the Collateral Account while it secures your Card. If you do not pay your Credit Card Account balance or you or we decide to close your Credit Card Account for any reason, you authorize us to apply all of the funds in the Collateral Account to your outstanding Credit Card Account balance.
