Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Card 2021 Review

At first glance, this card looks like a solid contender for fee-averse customers who value simplicity. However, several cards offer similar (or better) rewards potential.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card vs. Chase Freedom Unlimited®

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is another credit card with a $0 annual fee offering cardholders at least 1.5 points per dollar, which are redeemable as 1.5% cashback. However, customers who also hold other Chase cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card have the flexibility to redeem points toward travel purchases or transfer to travel partners for outsized value.

The Freedom Unlimited offers a similar welcome bonus: a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Also, earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (not including Target® or Walmart® purchases) on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. It also earns 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstores and 1.5% on all other purchases, so earnings will add up more quickly with this card. It has a similar 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 14.99% - 24.74% applies.

The Quicksilver does offer lower rates, though. For some cardholders, that may make the Quicksilver a better option.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card vs. Citi® Double Cash Card

The Citi® Double Cash Card is a Forbes Advisor favorite because it offers 2% cash back on all purchases with $0 annual fee (you get 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay for those purchases). For our example American household, that equates to an additional $132.05 in rewards annually. Rewards might be worth even more if you hold other Citi cards that earn ThankYou points, so you can optionally transfer rewards to travel partners.

The Double Cash offers a different version of a 0% introductory APR. Their offer is only valid on balance transfers and offers 0% intro for 18 months on Balance Transfers, followed by the standard variable APR of 13.99% – 23.99%. Your own personal circumstances will impact which offer is best for you if you intend on using the 0% APR at all.

Unfortunately, the Double Cash doesn’t offer a welcome bonus. It also charges a 3% foreign transaction fee, which makes it more expensive to use abroad than the Capital One Quicksilver.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠

If you’re victoria secret pink canvas bag for an all-purpose card that earns elevated rewards across a broad swath of categories, the Chase Freedom Flex could be the needle in the haystack you’ve been searching for. For an annual fee of $0, the card offers 5% cash back on eligible purchases in rotating categories, 5% on travel purchased through Capital one quicksilver credit card application status Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases.

Rewards come as Chase Ultimate Rewards®, a highly flexible currency that can be redeemed for cash back, travel, gift cards, merchandise or combined with rewards earned from a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and transferred to one of Chase’s travel transfer partners.

Benefits and perks

The Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card earns 1.5% cash back on purchases. There is no cap on the amount of cash back you can earn, and can either be credited to your statement, deposited directly into your bank account or used to purchase gift cards.

The card comes with travel accident insurance, extended warranty, complimentary concierge service and access to premium experiences such as sporting events and concerts.

Select calculated how much cash rewards the average American can earn in a year when using their Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card. We worked with the location intelligence firm Esri, who provided us with a sample annual spending budget of $22,126.

The budget includes six main categories: groceries ($5,174), gas ($2,218), dining out ($3,675), travel ($2,244), utilities ($4,862) and general purchases ($3,953).

With all spending considered, this would give a cardholder $332 in cash back. Over a five year period, cardholders could earn $1,659. Cardholders could earn more (or less) cash back depending on their annual spending habits, and a student's spending will likely vary from that of an older adult.

Rates and fees

The card has no annual fee or foreign transaction fees. However, the card has a high interest rate of 26.99% variable APR.

The balance transfer fee is 3%, and late payments fees can be up to $40.

This card isn't the greatest for flexible payment options. If you want to avoid interest in the first year, consider a credit card with a 0% introductory APR offer.

Card comparison

The Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card is one of many student credit cards available. However, these cards are mainly for college student with little-to-no credit history. However, if you have established credit, remember that you are not limited to just student credit cards. You may want to consider applying for a regular travel rewards or cash back credit card

Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card vs. Capital One SavorOne Student Credit Card

Both cards are similar in their benefit, but have different rewards-earning structures.

The Capital One SavorOne Student Credit Card earns up to 3% cash back on specific spending categories including dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and at grocery stores. The Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card earns 1.5% unlimited cash back on all purchases.

If you are torn between the two, it comes down to a matter of spending habits and preference. If you spend regularly in the categories for the SavorOne card, it can net you even more cash back. If your spending is in a variety of different categories, the Quicksilver Student Credit Card may be the way to go.

Capital One Quicksilver Student Credit Card vs. Discover it® Student chrome

The Discover it® Student chrome card has simple spending categories that may prove to earn less than the Quicksilver, but the welcome offer quickly makes the Discover card the favorite during the first year of card membership.

The Discover it Student chrome offers:

  • 2% cash back, up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter at gas stations and restaurants
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

The card comes with a welcome offer where all cash back from the first year is matched. So if you earn $300 in cash back throughout the year, Discover will match it to $600.

The Discover it Student chrome also has an introductory 0% APR for the first six months on purchases (after, 12.99% - 21.99% variable).

Bottom line

The Capital One Quicksilver Student credit card is a great option for students wanting to earn cash back on their purchases with its flat rewards structure. Keep in mind that if you are a current college student, you aren't restricted to only student credit cards.

The best way of finding a credit card that is right for you is to analyze your spending habits, credit score and financial needs, and then pick a card that complements

Our Methodology

To determine which credit cards offer the best value, Select analyzed 234 of the most popular credit cards available in the U.S. We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards, welcome bonus, introductory and standard APR, balance transfer fee and foreign transaction fees, as well as factors such as required credit and customer reviews when available. We also considered additional perks, the application process and how easy it is for the consumer to redeem points.

CNBC Select teamed up with location intelligence firm Esri. The company's data development team provided the most up-to-date and comprehensive consumer spending data based on the 2019 Consumer Expenditure Surveys from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You can read more about their methodology here.

Esri's data team created a sample annual budget of approximately $22,126 in retail spending. The budget includes six main categories: groceries ($5,174), gas ($2,218), dining out ($3,675), travel ($2,244), utilities ($4,862) and general purchases ($3,953). General purchases include items such as housekeeping supplies, clothing, personal care products, prescription drugs and vitamins, and other vehicle expenses.

Select used this budget to estimate how much the average consumer would save over the course of a year, two years and five years, assuming they would attempt to maximize their rewards potential by earning all welcome bonuses offered and using the card for all applicable purchases. All rewards total estimations are net the annual fee.

While the five-year estimates we've included are derived from a budget similar to the average American's spending, you may earn a higher or lower return depending on your shopping habits.

Good app but quirky lately (UPDATED)

I’ve been using this app for years and prefer it over competitor’s offerings. I like that notifications can be configured and received for every transaction. However within the past week or so, these notifications have been arriving very late — like many hours after the transaction has occurred. E.g. if my wife makes a purchase in the morning on her card I won’t see the transaction notification until the afternoon and I have to ask her if that was a legitimate transaction or not. It’s not very helpful, please look into why these delays are occurring.

EDIT: reduced from 5 stars to 2 stars because the delays in the purchase notifications have gotten absurd. I have iOS and SMS notifications enabled for purchases and both have been arriving OVER TWLEVE HOURS AFTER the actual purchase time. This is plainly ridiculous. Please fix!

EDIT2 (14Jan2020): OK back to five stars for now! The notifications issue seems to have been resolved as the “Instant Purchase Notifications” are back to being “instant”. Overall I have no qualms about this app as it’s easy to use for the few basic things I need it to do, with the notifications thing being at the top of the list. Thank you for the fix!

Not practical for deposit account holders

From what I hear this app and Capital One as a whole is AMAZING for credit card holders but for those that own deposit accounts this app really isn’t that useful! I’ve been banking with Capital One for years and I can honestly say I miss a lot of the features the Capital One Wallet app used to provide. Capital one quicksilver credit card application status love the developers of this app to take their deposit account holders into consideration and add features like alerts when a deposit is made to my account as well as alerts when a transaction is made over a certain dollar amount. To be clear, when I say alerts I mean actual notifications to my device sent from the app that appear on my home screen. I don’t want to have to receive alerts via text that is so outdated plus I have enough text threads as it is between work and family. I’m beginning to feel like Capital One isn’t interested in investing in their deposit account holders now or even in the future. I believe this company is more focused and geared towards their credit and lending services. To be fair Chase not only provides these basic notification services to customers but they also have added the ability to view what you spend money on weekly to their app. I do not want to close my accounts and go over to another bank because I truly enjoy banking with Cap. One. I love everything from the customer service all the way down to the debit card design. But I have a feeling I will leave if I don’t see any changes being made.

We appreciate you taking time to provide us with your feedback regarding the app and its features. We're always looking at ways to make our app be the best it can be, so we'll be sure to pass along your feedback to our dev team. If you have any additional feedback to share with us, feel free to update your review.

Need huge improvements on the app for notifications etc.

For example: I would love to see notifications for my debit card on the app. that would be super helpful to see your spending of any amount of money. So all information regarding your debit card is important too. You can only get texts which helps too, but if you can have texts+notifications all that working at the same time that could be better. I’m pretty sure that we need that on direct deposit account holders too! I can tell that CO credit cards works way more informative, but other bank service apps has the ability to see notifications for debit card spending already. I mean why not have developers/engineers take a look at the benefits capital one quicksilver credit card application status the full potential of this app. Just revamp this app use your skills think big. invest on your product/app/services to get it fixed at its fullest UI customer service, tools, options plus content. Capital One hasn’t been very successful with these updates. so keep an eye on these issues/suggestions think foreclosed homes for sale tulsa this! Be the best bank app ever. don’t wait for weeks or even complete months to improve it. Remember when it comes down to $$$ anything really matters!

Great until fraud occurs

Credit Karma Member

I've had this card for several years. Always paid on time, happy with everything until it got compromised due to a fraudulent attempt this weekend. Thankfully with the Capital One Wallet app, I caught it right away and locked my card. I called in to get it closed and replaced. When the new card arrived, a sticker on the front read that it was already activated- that was new/different than ususal, but I shrugged it off and put it in my wallet. Unfortunately, when I went to use it the next day, it was declining. I logged in online and it said my new credit card account was locked and I needed to call the fraud team. Very strange, since I thought the fraud was handled and this was a new card. I called in, and they told me my credit card address was flagged as "bad" and I needed to provide my driver's license scanned back-to-front, proof of residence, and my social security card scanned to get the hold removed. Wait, what? Why should I xceed financial credit union customer service to do any such thing after being a recent victim of fraud? What made even less sense was that the address the fraud team flagged as "bad" is the same one I do all my Capital One banking at, where my credit card has been registered for months, and where they shipped the new card. And if they genuinely felt my address was even potentially "bad" or "fraudulent" (both suggestions are logically absurd), why would you bother to ship the new card here?! That above all else shows clearly, the issue is rigid customer service, not my actual consumer safety from fraud. To me, it sounds like a computer algorithm flagged something erroneously, and a human needs to take the extra step to apply the logic at hand to remove that flag for a loyal, paying customer. No such thing at Capital One "fraud protection" services! When I tried to explain all this to the rep, I was pretty much ignored. I needed to give them all the aforementioned information, and that was the only solution to a problem I didn't create. No option to escalate to a manger who could help out, no application of basic logic (why suddenly flag this address out of the blue? Why not just call the banking side of operations and cross reference that my address is the same across accounts and settle it that way?). I was so fed up being ignored by the rep, I thanked them and ended the call, and tried calling in again to hope that a human would answer this time. Same roadblock reasoning! The computer is the be all end all. They have no interest in doing their job (customer service), just ticking off whether they got all the information required to clear the flag. So I'm done with it- the new card can stay on hold, and I'm moving on from QuickSilver. Capital One has enough of my information, and if this is how they treat a loyal, paying customer when fraud occurs, then I'll take my credit card business somewhere that can handle greater boston food bank careers right. Don't make a customer twice the victim in the name of "security" (again, so secure you shipped the card here). Use your heads, and train a team equipped to provide actual customer service, insted of blindly following an auto prompt. If you can't, at least develop a protocol or route for things to get escalated to a manager than can help.

I've had this card now for 4 1/2 years. I have received 2 credit increases. When I make a payment through the app it instantly updates my available credit. I make my payments on time every month. I was approved on Credit Karma with fair odds when I applied. I started out with the secured Platinum Card and moved to this one and haven't had a complaint.

A very good credit card with Rewards

Credit Karma Member

The absolute only reason why I give this a 4-star is because there is a $39 annual fee but other than that I think it's a really good card because there's rewards with it and also after capital one quicksilver credit card application status months you can possibly get a credit line increase when you make on-time payments

Good card

Credit Karma Member

Here's the thing here people, as i will try to write you an as honest review as possible. I just applied for, and was approved for this card. The credit limit is low ($300) and the interest rate is high (26%). But the thing is I was approved for an unsecured card needing no down payment. My score IS low (FICO 603) but that's the point. As I am trying to repair my history in the position I am in I cannot be choosy, or complain that the rate is too high or the limit is too low. Thats for people who really don't understand where they are at and probably would misuse it anyway. So I am happy to have a card where I can prove my worthiness and if I do that, all those things will come. I will use this card once a month and keep it in my lock box so I don't mess around with it.

Wrost credit card and the company service

Credit Karma Member

I applied for a new credit card " Capital One Quick Silver" with good credit history, good on-time payments and I'm capital one quicksilver credit card application status old customer as well. But I got worst credit limit and I spoke with the customer service agents about this situation and explined about the things but they didn't gave right answers and they are rude about to give right explanations. I finally decided not to stay/ keep with this credit card company Capital One and the customer agents said if you don't like it, you may close your accounts. And more over, I don't want to give not even 1 star here because their is no start not less than 1

The worst Credit Card EVER!!!

Credit Karma Member

The worst credit card I have ever owned. They charge annual fee of $39.99 plus interest within the FIRST YEAR. I applied because they said no annual fee within the first year and THEY STILL CHARGED ANNUAl FEE PLUS INTEREST. I even paid my balance in FUL and was still charged interest. NEVER GETTING A CAPITAL ONE CARD EVER AGAIN

Capital One in General

Credit Karma Member

I have had this card for many years. Just recently I went to make a purchase and I get an email and text alert asking if I was aware of the purchase. I selected yes in the email and via text. Then both systems states to call Capital One for possible fraudulent activity. I go through their process and was assured everything was okay, but I would have to wait until tomorrow until the money was available again. That isn't a very big deal. I go through the process again, and the exact same thing. I call them, perform the verification, this time they want me to send a copy of my driver's license (which I did), then was informed it would take 7-10 days until it could be processed and the card would be locked until it was reviewed. Really? I was at a tipping point, just wanted to cancel both my Capital One Cards, but I couldn't do that since they were locked. Needless to say, I will never use this company again.

Capital One ALWAYS comes through, even in a crisis

Unlike other creditors, when I went through some financial hardships, Capital One didn't try to send collectors after me, or in any way harass me like other creditors do. They were ALWAYS willing to work things out with me. For that, I will continue to remain a card hold and a patriot for Capital one.

I love this card. I have no used it as often as I want to due to being home, however, it been great to me. Interest could be worst, but very manageable.
