Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Paul Rudd bond over fake medieval warfare in "Role Models."

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Paul Rudd bond over fake medieval warfare in"Role Models."

Of the many movies I’ve seen, “Role Models” holds an unusual honor: It’s the funniest movie I almost didn’t see. In fact, you might say it was the movie I’d decided I could almost not see at all. (Mull that over for a moment; it will make sense eventually.)

Allow me to explain. There’s a simple reason for this which involves just three words: Seann William Scott. You see, I gave SWS the benefit of the doubt after “American Pie,” when his nympho rants seemed original if completely unfunny. I did so again after “Road Trip.” Then “Dude, Where’s My Car?” came along and nearly convinced me to lobotomize myself with the nearest sharp object. I was no longer in a charitable mood. Even when SWS is not Stifler, he’s still Stifler.

Then “Role Models” came along, and I realized what SWS had been missing: Paul Rudd. Somehow Rudd (He of the Droll, Piercing Offhand Zinger) and Scott click onscreen in this occasionally shocking, unpredictably touching potty-mouthed comedy. It’s Rudd and Scott’s comic chemistry — coupled with sharp writing and a cast of top-talent actors — that makes “Role Models” something more than an ad for Boys and Girls Club of America.

How do these chaps know each other? Well, Rudd is Danny Donahue, a grumpy, discontent 30something who makes a living selling Minotaur energy drinks that, when consumed in great quantities, turn his urine green. He does all the talking (”don’t take drugs, kids; drink Minotaur”) while his horny, beer-chugging coworker Wheeler (SWS) dons a Minotaur costume. Danny hates everything, including cup sizes at Starbucks (his rant on “venti” versus “large” is classic), Wheeler loves everyone, and so they have nothing in common. Nothing, that is, until Danny runs the company truck up a school fountain and saddles them both with possible jail time. But instead Danny’s girlfriend Beth (Elizabeth Banks, who, it seems, has accomplished a personal goal of being in every movie released in November), a lawyer, gets them 150 hours of community service at Sturdy Wings, a mentoring program run by ex-alcoholic/ex-cokehead Gayle Sweeney (Jane Lynch, perhaps the most underrated comic actress working today).

Here’s where “Role Models” takes flight. Enter Ronnie Shields (Bobb’e J. Thompson), a 10-year-old whose first order of business is accusing Wheeler of “grabbing my junk.” Just wait; the profanity gets better, and it’s shocking every time. Thompson’s a natural. McLovin (that would be Christopher Mintz-Plasse for those who lived under a rock in 2007) finds pain, intelligence and self-awareness in Augie Farks, a teen outcast obsessed with a medieval war game that’s part “Dungeons & Dragons,” part Medieval Times. These young actors accomplish something we don’t expect: They create characters as touching as they are surprising. It’s first-rate work from two relative newcomers, and it goes above and beyond what’s required of the standard Inspirational Teen Movie (ITM).

But back to Rudd and Scott. Rudd makes Danny into a kind of 21st-century Everyman who uses humor not to conceal his anger but to reveal it. He helped write the script, but I suspect that’s not why he has some of the best lines. It’s his delivery that makes every tidbit priceless. (Listen to him transform a misheard lyric in Kiss’ “Rock and Roll All Nite” into a screamingly funny commentary on his life.) Scott has toned down his manic energy nicely, and Wheeler — a sort of grown-up Stifler — makes a nice foil for Rudd’s droll misanthrope. I know not how or why, but it works.

Which, of course, could be said of “Role Models.” There’s a cookie-cutter plot, a see-it-from-miles-away ending, but this sharp little comedy just clicks. It almost makes me want to give SWS one last chance.

Almost.

Role Models – Review

Would you let these two supervise your kids?

Director: David Wain
Notable Cast: Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb’e J. Thompson

Director David Wain is still a relatively unknown name in Hollywood. His two previous directorial outings include the cult hit Wet Hot American Summer and last year’s The Ten. He was also a member of the sketch comedy groups The State and Stella. Now he delivers his first “Hollywood” film with Role Models. Does it maintain it’s quirky Wain style, or does it fall into bland predictable big budget fare?

The story revolves around two lovable losers: Danny Donahue (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott). They work together traveling from high school to high school telling kids to stay off drugs and drink Minotaur energy drink. Wheeler, a KISS obsessed underachiever, loves his job that “he can do hung over” and spends most his time hooking up with chicks. Danny hates his job. In fact, he pretty much hates everything, picking a fight with the girl at Starbucks over Venti vs. large. He realizes he’s thirty-five and has accomplished nothing so far in life. This misery leads to his girlfriend, Beth (Elizabeth Banks), dumping him. This pushes him over the edge. He cusses out a group of high school kids then crashes the company’s Minotaur themed trunk rather suggestively into a school’s bronze horse statue.

Rather than spend 30 days in jail, the guys opt to do community service instead. This brings them to Sturdy Wings, a sort of Big Brother-type program that is run by the not so sturdy Gale Sweeney (Jane Lynch). Gale teams the guys up with two of Sturdy Wings most troubled kids: Augie Farks (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), a dorky loner of a kid obsessed with LARP (Live Action Role Playing), a live action Dungeons & Dragons game, and Ronnie Shields (Robb’e J. Thompson) an uncontrollable, foul-mouthed little brat.

From there the film sort of falls into the predictable comedy pattern, the guys and the kids bond, then both the guys screw up and lose the kids, and are mad at each other and well, you know how these things end. But amidst the familiar story arc are some very wonderful characters, very hilarious moments and enough all around good storytelling for you to forgive the obvious. And the film’s climax that combines live action role-playing and KISS in a way you have to see for yourself is a perfect end to the enjoyable film.

Paul Rudd is his normal, amazing self and Seann William Scott is better than normal, but it is the minor characters that really jazz up this comedy. Jane Lynch shines as Gale. She is totally crazy and absolutely not somebody who should be running a program like Sturdy Wings, spouting inappropriate line after inappropriate line and having a very disturbing obsession with bagel dogs. The State veteran Joe Lo Truglio plays Kuzzik, one of Augie’s LAIRE friends and really sells the role playing aspect of the film. In fact the film is littered with The State and Wet Hot American Summer cast members that bring out the laughs. Also, Ken Jeong, the memorable Dr. Kuni from Knocked Up, is has hilarious as ever as King Argotron in Augie’s LARP world.

For his second film, Mintz-Plasse has certainly chosen wisely. Sure, he’s playing another nerdy character, but Augie is so well developed that Mintz-Plasse with not be labeled “McLovin” for the rest of his life. He shows that has range as an actor and is easily more funny in this film than he was in Superbad. Bobb’e J. Thompson has had a lot of small roles in his short career, but Ronnie is a sidesplitting and unforgettable character that will most certainly launch him to bigger and better things. If not for the superb performances from both these young actors, this film easily could have fallen to pieces.

Of course some attention must be paid to Elizabeth Banks, who plays Beth. With the release of this film that will place her in three films playing in theaters now, the other two being W. (where she plays Laura Bush) and the very hilarious Zack And Miri Make A Porno as the titular Miri. It is also worth noting that one of her earliest roles was in Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer. She’s a great and funny actress and delivers a wonderful performance here and it wonderful to see how far she’s come.

Role Models feels more like a cult film as opposed to a theatrical success, as it has that kind of feel. With its crass humor and language and few moments of nudity, underage teenagers all across the country will be trying to sneak into this film or rent it behind their parents back. It’s a fun, entertaining movie with a good story about friendship hidden beneath all the language and dorky role-playing.

Reshoots continuing until within six weeks of release, test screenings of five different cuts of three entirely different endings: these are the rumours, and great fun they are if you checked out of this asinine cash-grab when Han went for coffee; and was never seen again as he got into a lively debate with some patrons of the Westeros Starbucks about whether he or Greedo shot first. A particularly entertaining rumour has people shouting abuse at the screen as they attempted to walk out of a test screening after a bold artistic decision. Said bold artistic decision synching up with everything that has gone wrong so far it seems almost plausible. And yet… I half wonder if Disney faked footage of a finale so mind-blowingly awful that when by contrast a merely bad finale arrives people will be relieved, and forgiving. Call it the old Prince Hal gambit. If this bold artistic decision is actually real, and in the final cut, it constitutes a piece of cultural vandalism that puts one in mind of Thomas Bowdler correcting Shakespeare by giving King Lear the rom-com ending it so clearly always needed.

Very poor choice of words

I was minding my own business in Dundrum Town Centre the other day when suddenly a large screen started cycling thru shots from the new Charlie’s Angels, before ending with the misguided tagline – ‘Unseen. Undivided. Unstoppable.’ As the Joker aptly put it, very poor choice of words, as indeed Americans have left the movie monumentally unseen. There are a lot of reasons you could proffer about why, but let’s start with the poster. Elizabeth Banks’ name appears THREE TIMES. From Director Elizabeth Banks. Screenplay by Elizabeth Banks. Directed by Elizabeth Banks. ‘From Director…’ usually is accompanied by old hits, like Fincher being dogged by Seven until The Social Network, but not in the case of Banks, for obvious reasons. This is her first credit on a screenplay. This is her second feature as a director. The first was Pitch Perfect 2. Perhaps easing back on the Banks angle might have been wise. Maybe it would have been even wiser to have realised the problem isn’t just her name over and over on the poster, it’s the three people pictured on it. Kristen Stewart and… two other actresses. Think of the combined star power of Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the year 2000 when their Charlie’s Angels was 12th at the North American Box Office for the year. Now look at this poster again, and think of the combined star power of Kristen Stewart and effectively two British television actresses. Things get even worse when you see the awful trailer and it presents Stewart, the star, as effectively being the quirky comic relief to two nobodies. This film needed a poster with Stewart flanked by Emma Stone and Maggie Q to even get to the same starting gate as the Barrymore-Diaz-Liu effort.

Terminator 6 or 24: Day 5?

Terminator: Dark Fate has bombed at the box office, and hopefully this third failed attempt to launch a new trilogy will be the end of that nonsense for the foreseeable future. By the grace of God I did not have to review it, but I would have had no compunction in mentioning its opening shock while doing so. One of the frustrations of reviewing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was that the ending by dint of being the ending was considered unmentionable by good manners, even though it was an ending which made pigswill of much of the entire movie (and history) and it seemed Tarantino was deliberately taking advantage of such good manners in an act of tremendous bad faith. However, Terminator 6 in the opening minutes made an artistic decision that, once I had heard it as a rumour, struck me as entirely plausible given its similarity to the equally obnoxious opening of 24: Day 5. Denis Haysbert famously refused to return as President Palmer just to be killed off after mere seconds in the opening scene as a shock to launch the season until he was guilt-tripped into it by being told the entire season had been written around it. In retrospect he says he should have held out. That decision, to kill Palmer, was indicative of how Day 5 was going to lose its way to the point that I simply stopped watching; abandoning a show I had loved from its first episode on BBC 2 in 2002. The end of 24: Day 4, with Jack walking away into a hopeful sunrise after a phone call of mutual respect with President Palmer, was the perfect ending, for both those characters and for the show. But then the show had to keep going because money, so those character arcs were ruined, and, indeed, Day 1 of 24 (saving Palmer from assassination) became a complete and utter waste of time, and all emotional investment in his character over subsequent seasons was also a waste of time. Bringing back young Edward Furlong in CGI just to kill him off in the opening minutes of Terminator 6 was equally bone-headed. Suddenly the first two Terminator movies, the classics, were now a complete and utter waste of time. The last minutes of Terminator 2, which must rank among the greatest endings in cinema, were old hat to the eejits behind Terminator 6. If you want to make a mark on something you’re new to, it’s inadvisable to wildly antagonise all the fans who are the reason there is something for you to be a new writer or director to in the first place. If you want to create new and exciting characters, you have to write new and exciting characters, not just kill off important and beloved characters as if that magically and automatically made your new ciphers equally important and beloved. Tim Miller and Manny Coto. Sometimes it’s hard to tell them apart.

Music based on themes originally whistled by… Elizabeth Banks

To return to the catastrophic egomania of Elizabeth Banks you wonder if the situation was always doomed with her as director/producer or if a decent screenplay that she couldn’t have screwed up too badly could have been wrung from her pitch had she not donned that hat too, taking it upon herself to rewrite the shooting screenplay as her first ever screenwriting credit. The upcoming Birds of Prey is a paragon of the in vogue but absurd idea that only women can truly write for women. (As a corollary Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers would no doubt be surprised to find their creations Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey cancelled for the sake of consistency.) But, even if you grant the absurd premise that only women can write for women, it doesn’t follow that only this woman can write Charlie’s Angels. Off the top of my head I can think of seven screenwriters whose work I have enjoyed greatly over the years that might have done a splendid job had actress/writer/director/producer Banks stopped hiring herself for every job: Marti Noxon, Jane Espenson, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Moira Kirland, Melissa Rosenberg, Stephanie Savage, Diane Ruggiero. It might be objected that their collective writing experience is largely for the small screen. Yes, it is. But then Banks had no writing credits on any screen.

Demolition

Director Jean-Marc Vallee returns with a considerably less ‘prestige’ tale of mental disintegration and rejuvenation than his previous film Wild.

image-53fdfb05-1e35-4d58-8ce4-15259d646a58

Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a jaded investment banker so inattentive he hasn’t noticed his refrigerator leaking for 2 weeks. His wife Julia (Heather Lind) is reminding him anew just before a fatal car-crash. Work is no escape from his grief because he works for his disapproving father-in-law Phil (Chris Cooper), and also he doesn’t really have any grief. A confession Davis makes in a series of over-sharing letters tangentially seeking a refund from a hospital vending machine. The letters touch stoner customer services rep Karen (Naomi Watts), and soon Davis is hanging out with her and mentoring her troubled teenage son Chris (Judah Lewis). This does not impress Karen’s boyfriend Carl (CJ Wilson). Phil and Margot (Polly Draper) are even less impressed, especially as Davis disdains their plan for a scholarship in Julia’s name; being busy demolishing Julia’s open-plan house.

Bryan Sipe’s script appeared on the 2007 Blacklist of unproduced gems, but it feels like a script that should have doing the rounds in the late 1990s. There are similarities with Fight Club, American Beauty, and, as Joe Griffin pointed out to me, Falling Down. Jay M Glen, editing his first movie, offers some terrific disjunctive cuts but this does not have Fight Club’s bravura nihilism despite Davis’ enthusiastic destruction of all the consumer comforts of his oh-so-modern abode. Instead, with Yves Belanger lighting his third straight film for Vallee and casting a warm sheen over everything, it’s more akin to American Beauty’s concern with the beauty of the quotidian. The slight note of Camus’ L’Etranger in Davis pointedly not crying at his wife’s funeral deceives; this is as philosophically facile as American Beauty’s plastic bag flapping in the wind.

So thank heavens there is another film in Demolition’s DNA: Vallee’s own towering C.R.A.Z.Y. Davis, in preferring to pay contractor Jimmy (Wass Stevens) to allow him destroy condemned properties than engage with Julia’s scholarship recipient Todd (Brendan Dooling), is quite obviously dynamiting his career and life, but Vallee’s skilful use of music magicks this nervous breakdown into a spiritual awakening. And even more importantly the ‘rejuvenation’ of a bored career man by a disaffected teenager would be a tired retread (not just American Beauty but Meet Bill) were it not for Judah Lewis. Lewis, in some shots reminiscent of the young Tina Majorino, gives a star-making performance as the Bowie-adoring androgynous teenager who bonds with Davis. There are notes of Edward Furlong’s John Connor in his bravado, but the notes of vulnerability sing, and Gyllenhaal matches them with nuanced despair.

Demolition is a good, engaging film that you keep hoping will find a higher gear but when it never does its obvious good nature predisposes you to liking it more than it arguably deserves.

Jupiter Ascending

The Wachowskis return, oh joy, in 3-D, more joy, with a tale of a young woman (Mila Kunis) who discovers that she shares the same DNA as the Queen of the Universe, and goes on the run with a genetically engineered former soldier (Channing Tatum), oh, and he’s part wolf… The unloveable Eddie Redmayne is the villain, but the extremely loveable Tuppence Middleton is also in the cast, and, oddly, there’s a cameo from Terry Gilliam, whose work is said to be an influence on the movie. Alongside Star Wars, Greek mythology, and the comic-book Saga it seems…

Fifty Shades of Grey

Jamie Dornan is Christian Grey, Dakota Johnson is Bella Swan Anastasia Steele, Universal are terrible gamblers. Take one novel: which is 100pp of hilariously obvious Twilight homage leading to pornography for hundreds more and an unsatisfactory ending; a sensation because of the ability to secretly read it. Now hire art-house director Sam Taylor-Johnson to make an R-rated film focused on the romance, after 5 Twilight movies of said romance shtick; and force people to say out loud what film they’re seeing, or at least be seen going to it. Sit back, and watch this gamble fail.

o-BLACKHAT-facebook

Blackhat

Michael Mann returns with his first film since 2009’s uninspired Public Enemies. Chris Hemsworth, now officially a god in Iceland again, plays a hacker who gets a free pass from jail to help Viola Davis’ FBI agent liaise with her Chinese counterpart (pop star Wang Leehom) following a devastating cyber-attack in China which led to a nuclear incident. Hemsworth is distracted in his mission by Lust, Caution’s Chen Lien, and, if you’ve read the vituperative reviews, an appalling script. Mann’s been on a losing streak for a while, and his hi-def video camera infatuation only doubles down on that.

In the Heart of the Sea

March sees director Ron Howard take on Moby Dick. Or rather, tell the true story that inspired Moby Dick, rather than try and out-do John Huston. Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson are among the hapless crew of the whaling ship Essex out of New England that runs afoul of a curiously vindictive sperm whale in 1820. Martin Sheen starred in a rather good BBC version of this disaster its grisly aftermath at Christmas 2013. Who knows if Howard will match that, but he’ll definitely throw more CGI at the screen.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Joss Whedon takes off the Zak Penn training wheels and scripts this sequel to 2012’s hit solo. James Spader voices the titular evil AI, unleashed by Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man when fiddling about in Samuel L Jackson’s Pandora’s Box of Shield secrets. The great Elizabeth Olsen is Scarlet Witch, and Aaron Johnson is Quicksilver, but I find it hard to work up any enthusiasm for another ticked box on the Marvel business plan. Why? CGI and Marvel empire-building fatigue, a lack of interest in most of the characters, and great weariness with Whedon’s predictable subversion.

Lost River

What is the difference between a homage and le rip-off? The French should know and they loudly booed Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut as little more than Nicolas Winding Refn and David Lynch meeting up for a whimsical night out. Gosling also wrote this tale of a boy who finds a town under the sea down a river, and has to be rescued by his mother. Matt Smith, Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, and Ben Mendelsohn are the actors roped in by Gosling to flesh out his magical realist vision of a hidden beauty lurking underneath decrepit Detroit.

Far From the Madding Crowd
Bathsheba (Carey Mulligan), a wilful, flirtatious young woman unexpectedly inherits a large farm and becomes romantically involved with three widely divergent men: rich landowner William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), dashing Sgt. Troy (Tom Sturridge), and poor farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts). John Schlesinger’s 1967 film of Hardy’s classic novel is a formidable predecessor for this May release. This version from director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, The Hunt), was co-scripted with David Nicholls of One Day fame; another man whose tendencies are not exactly of a sunny disposition. Can the promising young cast overcome Vinterberg’s most miserabilist tendencies?

Tomorrowland

Well this is a curio… Brad Bird directs George Clooney and Secret Circle star Britt Robertson in a script he co-wrote with Damon LOST Lindelof about a genius inventor and a parallel universe, or something. Nobody really seems to know what it’s about. But then given Lindelof’s resume even after we’ve watched it we probably won’t know what it’s about. Bird proved extremely capable with live-action in Mission: Impossible 4, but explicitly viewed the talky scenes as mere connective tissue between well-executed set-pieces; pairing him with ‘all questions, no answers’ man seems like a recipe for more puzzled head-scratching.

Ant-Man

Ant-Man was in 2015: Hopes until director and co-writer Edgar Wright walked because Marvel shafted him after years of development. I was highly interested in seeing Paul Rudd’s burglar become a miniature super-hero who’s simpatico with ants after encountering mad scientist Michael Douglas and his hot daughter Evangeline Lilly; when it was from the madman who made Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. When this deservedly nonsensical take on a preposterous property is being helmed by Peyton Reed; whose only four features are Bring It On, Down With Love, The Break-Up, and Yes Man; my interest levels drop to zero.

Terminator: Genisys

Quietly brushing 2009’s Terminator: Salvation into the dustbin of history in July is this script by Laeta Kalogridis (Pathfinder, Night Watch) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry). Game of Thrones’ Alan Taylor directs, which presumably explains Emilia Clarke’s baffling casting as Jason Clarke’s mother. That’s going to take some quality Sarah Connor/John Connor timeline shuffling. And this is all about timelines. Arnie returns! Byung-Hun Lee is a T-1000! Courtney B Vance is Miles Dyson! YAY!!!!! Jai Courtney is Kyle Reese … BOOOOOO!!!!!!! Did we learn nothing from McG’s fiasco? We do not need another muscle-bound actor with zip charisma.

Fantastic Four

August sees Josh Trank shoulder the unenviable task of rebooting the Fantastic Four after two amiable but forgettable movies. Trank impressed mightily with the disturbing found-footage super-yarn Chronicle, and scripted this effort with X-scribe Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect). The cast is interesting; Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, and Toby Kebbel as Dr Doom; but this has had a troubled production, and carries an albatross around its neck as it must bore us senseless with another bloody origin story.

The Man from UNCLE

August sees CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB man Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) on a mission to infiltrate a mysterious criminal organization during the height of the cold war. Steven Soderbergh nearly made this with George Clooney from a Scott Z Burns script. Instead we get Guy Ritchie and Sherlock Holmes scribe Lionel Wigram. Sigh. Hugh Grant plays Waverley, while the very talented female leads Alicia (Omnipresent) Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki will highlight the lack of suavity and comic timing of the male leads; particularly troublesome given the show was dry tongue-in-cheek super-spy nonsense.

Black Mass

Poor old Johnny Depp is having something of an existential crisis at the moment. People moan and complain when he does his quirky thing (Mortdecai). But when he doesn’t do his quirky thing people moan and complain that he’s dull (Transcendence). September sees him team up with Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton for Scott Cooper’s 1980s period thriller about the FBI’s real-life alliance with Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger, exploring how  the bureau’s original good intention of running an informant was derailed by Bulger’s clever connivance, ending up as a sort of state-sanctioned take-over of the criminal underworld.

The Martian

Ridley Scott just can’t stop making movies lately, but he’s having a considerably harder time making good movies. November sees the release of The Martian starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars after being presumed dead in a ferocious storm. The supporting cast includes Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, Sebastian Shaw, Kate Mara, and the regrettably inevitable Jessica Chastain. Damon must try to send an SOS forcing NASA to figure out how on earth to go back and rescue him. Drew Goddard wrote the script. There’s the reason this might work.

640_hateful_eight_poster

The Hateful Eight

November sees the return of Quentin Tarantino. The writer/director who never grew up follows his rambling gore-fest Django Unchained with another Western. But this one is shot in Ultra Panavision 70, despite being set indoors, and has more existential aspirations. Yeah… Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Walton Goggins, and Zoe Bell return to the fold for this tale of bounty hunters holed up during a blizzard, while newcomers to Quentinland include Bruce Dern, Demian Bichir, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Nobody’s told Tarantino to stop indulging himself in years so expect endless speechifying and outrageous violence.

Popsmacked!: Who's Chris Pratt? And other Hollywood head-scratchers

Forget John Wayne, Marlon Brando and Clint Eastwood.

They're toast, relics of Hollywood's Golden Age, when actors were larger than life with entire franchises built around their big screen personas.

People worshipped them, mobbed them in the streets, turned up faithfully for their movies, even the stinkers.

But it was not to last. Special effects took over, franchises became king and actors became cogs in a much larger wheel.

Who's the biggest movie star today?

I'll give you a hint: it's the guy who starred in this year's No. 1 hit, Jurassic World, and two of last year's top five: "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Lego Movie."

Come on, you can do it: Chris . Chris .

"This is one of the biggest stars in the world right now!'' comic Billy Eichner, accompanied by, yes, Chris Pratt, informed passersby on a recent episode of his game show, "Billy On The Street."

"Who is it?"

The first woman looks confused: "I have no idea.''

Eichner sighs and directs Pratt to the next person: "Sir, for a dollar, the biggest star in the world right now. Who is this?"

He furrows his brow: "I don't know.''

Next: "Miss, for a dollar, look who it is: the hottest star in the world right now!''

She squeals with delight: "Oh my god!"

"What's his name?" demands Eichner.

She points triumphantly: "Chris Evans!"

"No!'' he shouts, jumping up and down. "Chris PRATT!!!

And so it goes in the new Hollywood, where leading men and women — despite their multimillion-dollar salaries — are no better known to the general public than the guy who collects your trash or serves coffee at your local Starbucks.

Chris Pratt, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine — it's like 1961 all over again, when every second pop singer had the first name "Bobby".

"I said before we ever started shooting "Guardians" that Chris Pratt's the biggest movie star in the world,'' director James Gunn told GQ. "It's just that people don't know it yet.''

Two years later, not much has changed.

People still can't tell Pratt, 36, from Evans ("Captain America"), 34, Pine ("Star Trek"), 35, and Hemsworth, 32, who — I had to look this up — wielded an enchanted hammer in "Thor."

All box office superstars, with their own loyal cults, but do you know what would happen if they appeared in a film that didn't rely on action, effects and the uttering of monosyllabic witticisms?

Not much.

And then there's Shia LaBeouf, Eddie Redmayne, Robert Pattinson, Josh Hutcherson, Andrew Garfield, Lupita Nyong'o, Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender, Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Put these people on a podium in the middle of Times Square and people will stand around, scratching their heads.

Why?

It's not a talent issue, because actors like Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") and Gyllenhaal ("Everest") are in the same class as the De Niros and Pacinos of previous generations.

But the platform to showcase their acting chops before a mass audience has all but disappeared, sucked into the creative vacuum of international marketing campaigns and corporate profit margins.

To put a spin on Norma Desmond's famous quote from "Sunset Boulevard," it's not that the stars have gotten smaller, it's that the movies have gotten bigger. Yikes — too big.

It's like Robopocalypse out there, with superhero franchises and animated kiddie flicks clobbering anything with a defiantly human storyline.

What did Chris Pratt actually do in the satirical superhero flick "Guardians" besides crack a few jokes and look whimsically ironic?

What did he do in "Jurassic Park" besides bond with digital dinosaurs and flirt with Bryce Dallas Howard, another actor no one would recognize in a police lineup.

Things were different 30 years ago, when actors like Michael J. Fox, Sylvester Stallone, Robert Redford, Michael Douglas, Harrison Ford, Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd topped the box office in films that defined them as distinctive personalities we still recognize today.

"Where are today's equivalent of the idiosyncratic superstars of the past?" posed former studio exec Peter Bart in a famous 2011 essay. "The Spencer Tracys, Katharine Hepburns, Humphrey Bogarts or even the James Deans?''

"I would argue the talent is at hand, but the studios don't know how to nurture what was once their most valuable resource.''

"The obsessive drive is to find the next Spider-Man.''

It's hard to argue when you consider this year's top-grossing films star three of the four Chrises plus Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Vin Diesel, Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks Steinfeld, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Rudd.

Who among them will be recalled fondly, if at all, in the year 2045?

Johansson? Maybe. Ruffalo? Possible. Diesel? Don't make me laugh.

To be fair, there are genuine stars out there — those with the acting chops, mystique and box office clout to survive beyond the next trend in digital animation.

But with the exception of 25-year-old Jennifer Lawrence — a titanic talent who breezes between box office glory and critical acclaim — their median age is trending upward: Angelina Jolie (40), Brad Pitt (51), Tom Hanks (59), Harrison Ford (73) and of course, Tom Cruise (53), often dubbed "the last movie star."

Most of their reputations rest, not surprisingly, on crowd-pleasers that emerged long before the digital era relegated intelligent, non-effects movies to the art house circuit.

"It may no longer be possible for a young actor to make it big as a movie star,'' wrote critic J. Hoberman. "Movies can now be consumed on a cellphone. Stardom itself has been further downscaled — or 'democratized', if you prefer — by Facebook and Twitter.''

There are those who would argue that charming, talented Bradley Cooper is a movie star in the Old School mode, paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks been nominated for four Oscars, voted Sexiest Man Alive and enjoying box office success with both The Hangover comedy franchise and last year's galvanizing, un-sequely American Sniper.

But think about guys like John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and ask yourself this: Would you recognize Cooper if he sat next to you in a bar? Does he seem in any way iconic? Other than being nice, what are his distinguishing characteristics as an actor?

And what of the four Chrises?

While Pratt has made no attempt to expand his range since breaking through with "The Lego Movie" — probably a wise move — Evans, Hemsworth and Pine have all strived for the kind of intimate, actorly roles once used to secure long-term careers for action heroes like Tom Cruise.

To sum up the end result:

Pine: "This Means War." Bomb

Hemsworth: "Blackhat." Bomb

Evans: "Snowpiercer." Hit overseas, bomb in North America.

On the plus side, Evans' film got great reviews and indicates a future as a serious actor.

But a household name?

All four of these guys would be better off appearing together on a reality show — Which Chris is Which? — where they could stump contestants, slap themselves on the back and revel in irony.

It means they'll never be taken seriously as movie stars, fedex account number canada who are we kidding? That was never gonna happen anyway.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Paul Rudd bond over fake medieval warfare in "Role Models."

Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Paul Rudd bond over fake medieval warfare in"Role Models."

Of the amazon price tracker movies I’ve seen, “Role Models” holds an unusual honor: It’s the funniest movie I almost didn’t xcel energy fargo bill pay.

Almost.

Film / Role Models

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rolemodels_8634.jpg

Role Models is a 2008 American comedy film directed by David Wain about two energy drink salesmen who are ordered to perform 150 hours of community service as punishment for various offenses. For their service, the two men work at a youth mentoring program designed to pair kids with adult role models. The film stars Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bobb EJ Thompson, Jane Lynch, Ken Jeong, and Elizabeth Banks.

This film provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Augie's are selfish, judgmental, and highly dismissive of their son and his interests. It doesn't help that one is a stepdad who clearly sees him as unwanted baggage.
  • Actor Allusion: Seann William Scott plays a sex-obsessed, rowdy guy who goes on a last name basis, and said last name ends in "-er". Subverted a bit in that Stifler is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, while Wheeler is a pretty good guy at face value (unlike Danny, he tries to make the best of his time with Ronnie from the start) and even likes his job of telling kids to stay off drugs, even if he doesn't abide by it himself.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Subverted. Augie is "king" for about thirty seconds, before Lady Esplin (Sarah) "kills" him and becomes queen instead.
    • Reverted when she asks him to be her king.
  • Batman Gambit: Danny and Augie pull this off during the Battle Royale. Danny pretends to be wounded, knowing King Argotron will want to finish him personally. Augie takes this opportunity to eliminate the rest of Argotron's guards and face him one-on-one.
  • Bland-Name Product: Minotaur, an obvious stand-in for Red Bull.
  • Bromantic Comedy: Not so much between the main characters but moreover between their respective kids they have to look after.
  • The Casanova/Lovable Sex Maniac: Wheeler. Ronnie is a junior version of this.
  • Catchphrase: "Game Face!"
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Gail Sweeney.
  • Character Development: Danny becomes more willing to do stuff he doesn't normally do and starts to enjoy his life, Wheeler becomes more responsible as a person, Augie becomes more confident and Ronnie becomes less of a foul mouthed douche.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Danny. He's played by Paul Rudd, what did you expect?
    • Gail is a wannabe but most of her snark attempts end up as Metaphorgotten.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Paraphrased in an actual line by Gail and her magical bagel dog.
  • Drugs Are Bad: The purported Public Service Announcement behind Minotaur's school marketing campaign. Predictably subverted when we see Wheeler privately smoking a joint.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: One thing Wheeler and Ronnie have in common.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Danny won his girlfriend back after he finally began to enjoy his life, Wheeler has justin h min "little brother" of sorts, Fedex account number canada beat the king of LAIRE and got paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks be with the girl he liked (who throughout the movie has been getting more and more exasperated in her attempts to be with him) and Ronnie finally has someone to look up to who won't walk out of his life like his dad did. Oh, and neither Danny or Wheeler have to go to jail because Gail used to give the judge assigned to their case blowjobs for drugs.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Danny and Wheeler verbally dismantling a kid who heckles them shows you exactly what kind of adults they are.

Kid: Hey nice cow outfit. Where can I pick one of those up at, the gay zoo? Homo.

Danny: No, no. It's not a cow. It's a a minotaur. It's a creature of myth. And he got this one out of your mom's closet.

Wheeler:She let me keep it after I fucked her.

  • Freudian Excuse: Ronnie, somewhat. Wheeler uses this to his advantage to bond with him.
  • Friendship Denial:

    Wheeler: "You ready, pal?"
Ronnie: "I ain't your pal, vanilla."

    • And then later with Danny and Wheeler

Wheeler: "You are a S-H-I-T-T-Y friend.
Danny: "I am not your friend."

  • Hello, Attorney!: Played by Elizabeth Banks. Hello, indeed.
  • Ironic Birthday
  • Insult Backfire: Danny and Wheeler react to Gail's attempts at abuse more with bemusement than anything else.

Gail: Well, well, well. If it isn't Mr. Bullshit and Dr. I'm-Full-Of-Shit?
Wheeler: In what way are we full of shit?
Danny: Which one of us has the Ph.D?

  • Intercourse with You: Wheeler teaches Ronnie what the songs of KISS are all about.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Danny. The "jerk" part is definitely shown in the coffee shop scene, where he insults the barista who undoubtedly didn't come up with the names.
    • Gail as well - despite being arrogant and authoritative, she still sees the best in Danny and Wheeler.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Wheeler dives in front of Danny to save him in the battle royale.
  • Large Ham: Gail Sweeney, the head of Sturdy Wings. She's a pompous, no-nonsense alcoholic who holds her head high and delivers a condescending speech to Danny and Wheeler.
  • Last-Name Basis: Wheeler. It's mentioned when he is introduced to Ronnie that Wheeler's first name is "Anson."
  • LARP: Despite the running cracks by the other characters not involved with LARP until the royale, it is portrayed as a good, if niche and nerdy, way of social interaction, especially for someone like Augie who doesn't fit in elsewhere.
  • Mama Bear: Ronnie's mother describes herself as one of these to Wheeler after Ronnie walked all the way home from a party Wheeler took him to.
  • Manchild: Both Danny and Wheeler are this to some extent.
    • Wheeler is in his 30s and is more interesting in partying hard armstrong bank fort gibson ok having sex than anything else.
    • Danny is an emotionally immature and impulsive slacker whose bitterness over the fact that he's been on a rut for 10 years makes him unable to appreciate his life and those around him.
  • Mouthy Kid: Ronnie, a middle school boy of hilarious retorts and apparently vast cinematographic knowledge.

Danny: Pick us up in two hours.
    Ronnie: Fuck you, Miss Daisy.

  • No Antagonist: While King Argotron is considered an antagonist, at least some of his nastiness is him roleplaying. The other characters in the film all united bank of switzerland near me redeeming qualities too.
  • Only Sane Man: Danny usually plays this role.
    • Unfortunately he abdicates this role in the first 20 minutes and becomes simply Jerkass. For a large part of the movie, he isn't even lovable.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: The Cassadonian armies. Special mention to Davith of Glencracken, The Dragon of King Argotron. He unfailingly follows Argotron's orders, indulges in his King's lies and schemes, and, when in character, is cruel and heartless. Moment he dies, he is immensely affable.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Wheeler and Ronnie are the red to Danny and Augie's blue.
  • Running Gag: "Love take me down to the streets."
    • The constant gay jokes about the guys who play LAIRE.
    • Ronnie repeatedly calling Danny "Ben Affleck."
    • Gail taking every opportunity in every conversation to spuriously work in a reference to her cocaine addiction.
  • Serious Business: LAIRE is the epitome of this trope.
  • Suck E. Cheese's
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Quite a lot during the battle royale.
  • That Came Out Wrong: A running gag is that a character will say something that sounds perverse. Some examples include:

"It's my job to service these boys."
"Let us gently touch our tips."
    "Smell that bush."

  • Watch It Stoned: When Wheeler and Connie overdose on Ambien and try to have sex.
  • Waxing Lyrical: A character trait of Danny's, with movie quotes and songs. While it is used for a few gags, it seems to be something he defaults to when he can't think of something more honest and real to say in a given situation, like when he's trying to win his girlfriend back or apologize to the King of LAIRE on Augie's behalf.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Danny and Wheeler get so many of these it's not funny. The biggest one is when Wheeler took Ronnie to a party and left him with a guy playing Xbox to get laid, then Ronnie left and walked all the way home.

One of the greatest things about being a little kid is that you have happy places and you can be very vocal about these places that make you jump with joy.

“I want to go swimming at Grandma’s!” you’d say on a summer morning and your mom would pack you up after the proverbial “What do we say?” “Please, I want to go to Grandma’s! Yes? Now? Can we go?”

And you’d spend the day jumping off the raft in the middle of the ice cold lake with your cousins, sprouting new freckles, yelling “Race ya!” and dodging the slick fish that swam around your legs and made you kick like a frenzied frog all the way to the old wooden raft that’s been there since your dad was a kid.

There was your best friend’s house where you’d go nearly every day after school because her mom would say to you both “Hello, girls, shoes off, wash hands! (even before she could SEE your hands!) and by the time you got to the table there would be warm Oatmeal/butterscotch cookies and cold, cold milk (How did she get the milk THAT cold?) fixed just for you two and her little brother.

When you were a teenager, it nags head bike rentals basketball games played at Home on Friday night with your best friends eating popcorn and drinking Coke, flirting with the guy that you would eventually go to Prom with.

When I was a little girl my Happy Place was Hampton Beach, New Hampshire where for one week every summer my mom (and depending on the year, her boyfriend/new husband/friends) would take us to the infamous beach we dreamed of all year. We would wake up at 7am, and someone would have been dispatched for Dunkin’ Donuts(a cruller and OJ for me) and we would all head to the beach where we would cover ourselves in Bain de Soleil, (an orange gel that still to this day makes me swoon when I smell it.) The adults would lay on the blanket all day and being an only child I was good at amusing myself, walking down to the jetty that jutted out far into the ocean, seeing how far I could walk out until I got too scared and I ran all the way back, swearing that I saw a shark circling the end of the jetty. (It didn’t help that one year my mom and her friends took me to see “Jaws” while we were on vacation at the beach!)

At the end of the day, sunburned, we would walk back to our hotel, past the giant bandshell across from the boardwalk, take showers and go out to dinner (A fish place, always a fish place.) Then the boardwalk where I would take my $7 that I parceled out for each day and play Skeeball. One year all I desperately hoped to win with my Skeeball tickets was a cobalt blue rabbit’s foot. Another year was a blacklight poster with groovy  swirls of aqua (which may explain my early obsession with this color). Later on our way back to the hotel, we would stop for a fried dough at Blinks Fry Doestand (raspberry jam topping, please.)

In the dead of winter I would think of our one week at Hampton Beach as the happiest place I’d ever known.

I’ve been thinking about Happy Places lately. When I was going through the hell that actually started The Happygirl Experiment, in session, my therapist would ask me “Do you want to go to your happy place? Describe it to me.”

And in the quiet of her office, with a blanket around me, I felt safe. I closed my eyes and thought of my favorite place. I’ve been lucky enough to have traveled almost a million miles. I’ve seen places I couldn’t have imagined as a little girl growing up in a trailer park. I tell her of a place that is closest in my heart- a turquoise pool with palm trees that glow against an orange daiquiri colored sky. It is here that I would sit on a chaise lounge in the morning after running on the treadmill in the fourth floor indoor/outdoor gym and enjoy an espresso while watching the sun rise.

It is a place I have stayed at hundreds of times over the past ten years, mostly for work when I was covering movie junkets and meetings with studios and agencies in Los Angeles. It is a place where I feel at home, a place where I feel my stress leave when I pull into the driveway.

When I hear “Welcome back to the Four Seasons, Miss Johnson” I am chill, I am blissed out, I am in my Happy Place.

As I was thinking about the new Happy Places feature for The Happygirl Experiment, wells fargo bill pay app was no question which place would be the premiere destination. It had to be The Four Seasons Los Angeles on Doheny Drive zions bank founders scholarship Beverly Hills.

The Four Seasons Los Angeles is a place where I spent almost every weekend for 10 years and before you say it, yes I realize I am a lucky girl. This Four Seasons location is well known for their celebrity guests but you'll feel like a celebrity even if you are just a star in your own universe.

Yes, there are some wonderful hotels, even many outstanding Four Seasons around the world, but The Four Seasons Los Angeles has that something special that makes a claim in your heart. Maybe it’s the fact that everyone seems to remember your name even your first time there and they actually seem to care that you are happy. Or maybe it’s the heady smell of lilies when you walk in the entrance or  the beds-- the beds that are so sumptuous that you can actually purchase them.

While the hotel is beautiful and the public spaces like the pool and spa are fun and relaxing and the food is

extraordinary (best matzoh ball soup I've ever had was in room service), it's the attention to detail and customer service that makes The Four Seasons Los Angeles outstanding. Is there something your heart desires? The Four Seasons concierge will make it happen, from coordinating a marriage proposal (I once saw a proposal out by the pool with just a boy on his knees, a crying girl and hundreds of candles) to suggesting a great place for a tattoo (they immediately wrote down their recommendation without blinking an eye at me and they were right!)

It is a place where they serve the most delicate lemon ricotta pancakes (better than my grandmother's). It’s where I have studied my notes in the quiet of my room and prepared my questions for the talent I was about to interview and where I sat across from hundreds (thousands?) of the biggest names in Hollywood as I asked them about their films.

You might think The Four Seasons would be stuffy, fancy. It isn’t. Imagine if you had a very wealthy aunt who invited you to spend a weekend at her lovely home in Beverly Hills. Now imagine her house is REALLY big. With a terrific Italian restaurant and a pool where the pool staff bring you treats while you’re relaxing on a chaise lounge (peanut butter and jelly shakes, frozen grapes, watermelon. .) Too hot in the sun? The pool team will spray you down with a cool Evian mist and even clean your sunglasses.

I’m afraid that there is one downside, however. When you stay at The Four Seasons Los Angeles, ever after you will always compare other hotels to this one.

Here are some tips to help you with your stay:
  • The hotel has recently experienced a spectacular and thoughtful remodel, so expect gorgeous guest rooms with flat screen TV’s, new beds and updated public areas, including a new restaurant, Culina, and a dazzling patio coldwell banker upchurch realty athens ga the Windows Lounge.
  • There is a wonderful, almost secret patio as part of the Culina. Ask to sit here for dinner. The candlelight, fountain and ambience will make it a sublime evening.
  • A guest room on a high floor facing east (garden view) will give you an unsurpassed view of the Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood sign. (Sleep with your curtains open and wake up to the pink sunrise.) Ask for room 1128 with the panaromic balcony.
  • There is a house car that will take you in a two mile radius around Beverly Hills- a Rolls Royce Phantom and on the weekends a Mercedes S2 as well. (First come, first serve)
  • If you are an early riser, there is complimentary coffee and light pastries from 5:30 to 8am in the lobby and until 10am in Culina and the pool cabanas.
  • The gym is outstanding first thing in the morning with floor to ceiling window panels that slide open when the weather is lovely for a fresh breeze as you run on a treadmill.
  • Sunday Brunch is the best meal of the week here. Try the hot donuts (made right in front of you!) and a kid’s area with unbelievable mac and cheese and mini cupcakes.
If you want to be pampered, if you want to know what  world renowned customer service feels like, if you want to taste the best Mojito in the world (in the Windows Lounge), I hope you can book a stay at The Four Seasons Los Angeles and make it your happy place too.

Cheers to the very first Happy Place featured on The Happygirl Experiment- The Four Seasons Los Angeles!

As the title suggests, so forth.

“There are now seven different drafts of the speech. The President likes none of them”

With apologies to The West Wing… It’s been pretty entertaining hearing about apparently unbridled panic in private at Disney as they try to fix Star Wars without ever admitting in public that they broke it.

Elizabeth Banks’ name appears THREE How can i pay my wayfair bill online. Maybe it would have been even wiser to have realised the problem isn’t just her name over and over on the visa costco citi card login, it’s the three people pictured on it.

If you want to create new and paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks characters, you have to write new and exciting characters, not just kill off important and beloved characters as if that magically and automatically made your new ciphers equally important and beloved. Tim Paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks and Manny Coto.

Jay M Glen, editing federal reserve bank services routing number lookup first movie, offers some terrific disjunctive cuts but this does not have Fight Club’s bravura nihilism despite Davis’ enthusiastic destruction of all the consumer comforts of his oh-so-modern abode.

James Spader voices the titular evil AI, paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks by Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man when fiddling about in Samuel L Jackson’s Pandora’s Box of Shield secrets.

The French should know and they loudly americas tire fontana Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut as little more than Nicolas Winding Refn and David Lynch meeting up for a whimsical night out.

This version from director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, The Hunt), was co-scripted with David Nicholls of One Day fame; another man whose tendencies the heritage foundation and obamacare not exactly of a sunny disposition.

Nobody paul rudd elizabeth banks movie starbucks seems to know what it’s about.

Sigh. Hugh Grant plays Waverley, while the very talented female leads Alicia (Omnipresent) Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki will highlight the lack of suavity and comic timing of the male leads; particularly troublesome given the show was dry tongue-in-cheek super-spy nonsense.

johnny-depp-black-mass-05272014-lead01-600x450

The supporting cast includes Jeff Daniels, Foreclosed homes for sale tulsa Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, Sebastian Shaw, Kate Mara, and the regrettably inevitable Jessica Chastain.
