Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express Benefits & Review 2021

These cards can be a better fit for your spending habits or rewards preference.

Chase Freedom Unlimited®:

The Chase Freedom Unlimited earns at least 1.5% cash back on purchases:

  • 5% back on travel purchases made on Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3% back at restaurants (includes meal delivery apps) and drugstores
  • 1.5% back on all other purchases

There is no redemption minimum for cash statement credits and bank deposits.

You can also redeem your rewards for gift cards and award travel for 1 cent each. That’s the same redemption value as the cash payouts.

The annual fee is $0 but the foreign transaction fee is 3%.

Chase Freedom Flex℠:

The Chase Freedom Flex is another cash back card without an annual fee.

You can earn up to 5% back on purchases:

  • 5% back on $1,500 in combined purchases on quarterly bonus categories
  • 5% back on travel purchases on Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • 3% back on dining, meal delivery apps, and at drugstores
  • 1% back on non-bonus purchases

There is no redemption minimum for cash back, gift cards, or award travel.

The annual fee is $0 but the foreign transaction fee is 3%.

Blue Cash Preferred Card:

If you’re comfortable paying an annual fee and want cash rewards, the American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card is the bigger sibling to the Blue Cash Everyday Card.

Card benefits include:

  • 6% back at U.S. Supermarkets (on the first $6,000 then 1% back)
  • 6% back on select streaming services
  • 3% back on transit
  • 3% back at U.S. gas stations
  • 1% back on all other purchases

The redemption minimum is $25 for cash statement credits.

The annual fee is $0 for the first year and then $95. International purchases incur a 2.7% foreign transaction fee.

This card makes sense if groceries (up to 6%) and the 3% bonus categories are your most prominent credit card expenses. The extra rewards may easily offset the $95 annual fee.

Capital One SavorOne:

The Capital One SavorOne has similar but slightly different rewards categories to the Blue Cash Everyday Card.

You will earn unlimited 3% cash back on these purchases:

  • Dining
  • Entertainment
  • Groceries
  • Popular streaming services

All non-bonus purchases earn 1% back.

There are no annual fees or foreign transaction fees.

Citi Double Cash Card

The Citi Double Cash Card earns 2% back on purchases (1% when at the purchase time and 1% when you pay your balance).

The redemption minimum is $25 for cash statement credits, paper checks, and linked Citi bank account deposits.

This flat-rate rewards card can be the better option when most of your monthly spending doesn’t earn bonus points with the Blue Cash Everyday rewards tiers.

The annual fee is $0, although it has a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Capital One VentureOne:

If you still yearn for travel rewards, the Capital One VentureOne earns 1.25x points on every purchase. You can redeem your points for travel statement credits on recent travel purchases, book upcoming trips, or transfer to airlines and hotels.

The card doesn’t have an annual fee or a foreign transaction fee.

You can get more out of your everyday purchases with the right cash-back credit card. Some cash-back credit cards offer flat-rate perks, like 1% to 2% cash back on all purchases, while others reward you at higher rates, between 2% and 6%, when you spend money on groceries, at gas stations or even with certain retailers. And, cash-back credit cards can help you earn a little extra back every time you purchase a holiday gift.

When you earn cash back, your rewards usually show up as a statement credit that can be used to pay your bill or be deposited into your bank account. Every time you use your credit card on eligible purchases, you'll earn real dollars and cents back. It's that simple. Check out our picks of the best cash-back credit cards below. We update this list continuously to make sure you stay informed of the best opportunities available.

Our Take

Most cards that offer category selection for maximized cash rewards limit these selections to a single quarter. But the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card* allows you to select "online shopping" as an indefinite rewards category where you can earn 3% cash back rewards. Note that you must manually choose this category via online banking or the mobile banking app, as the default category is "gas."

You can also earn 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (earn 3% and 2% cash back on up to $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club purchases each quarter, then 1%), and 1% cash back on all other purchases. The welcome bonus doesn't hurt, either.

Our Take

While there are a few contenders for the best grocery credit card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a grocery deal that's hard to beat. Not only does it offer one of the highest cash-back rates for grocery store purchases at 5% (not including Target or Walmart purchases), but it has one of the highest spending caps for this category as well, at $12,000 on these purchases for the first year. So you can earn up to $600 cash back in the first year, just on groceries -- that's without mentioning the other cash back rewards categories this card offers.

While there are a lot of other quality gas cards available, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express boasts simplicity with straightforward cash-back rewards and no annual fee for the first year ($95 annually after that). With 3% cash back at US gas stations, it gets one of the highest returns on the market for gas purchases.

Even for city dwellers and commuters, this card offers great transportation benefits with 3% cash back on transit (trains, buses, parking, rideshare services, taxis, tolls and more). There are plenty more cash-back categories to enjoy with this card, as well. Cash back is received in the form of Rewards Dollars that can be redeemed for a statement credit.

Our Take

With the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card*, you can earn an unlimited 4% cash back on dining and takeout. The $300 welcome bonus (when you spend at least $3,000 within the first 3 months of account opening) can essentially cover your annual fee ($95) for the first three years.

You can even earn more cash-back rewards when you make purchases on entertainment (4%), popular streaming services (4%) and grocery stores (3%). For everything else, a 1% cash-back rate covers you. If you want to avoid the annual fee, or don't have a very large dining and entertainment budget, you may also want to consider this card's sibling, the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card*, or some of our other best picks for restaurant credit cards.

Our Take

It doesn't get simpler than the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card*. This card boasts a 2% flat cash rewards rate on purchases -- the highest flat cash-back rate on the market. You don't have to worry which card you're going to use for which purchase. And while there are other cash-back credit cards that'll net you 2%, the sign-on bonus, $0 annual fee and introductory APR make this card stand out among the competition. This is also a great option for an emergency credit card.

FAQs

How do cash-back credit cards work?

Cash-back credit cards offer cardholders rewards on their spending in the form of statement credits or cash. A statement credit is a reduction in the amount due to the credit card company on your monthly bill. Note that rewards are not always available the month you earn them -- they are usually applied to your balance by credit card issuers after one or two billing cycles.

The redemption process for cash-back credit cards is either automatic or very simple. Some cards automatically apply cash rewards to your statement balance each month. Others require you to log in and redeem available rewards points for statement credits. Most points don't expire, but you will lose them if you close the account before redeeming them.

What types of cash-back credit cards are there?

Cash-back credit cards generally fall into four primary categories: flat-rate, tiered, rotating or choose your own.

Flat-rate cards offer the same rate for every purchase. Tiered cards offer a different rewards rate for different categories of spending. Rotating category cards offer different rewards each quarter, determined by the card issuer. Choose-your-own category cards allow you to choose your rewards category.

How do you choose a cash-back credit card?

To choose the best cash-back credit card for you, the most important thing is to have a clear idea of how you're already spending money each month. Once you identify the categories where you have the highest, most consistent spending, use the charts in our list to determine which card will net you the highest return. Consider other features of the cards, too, such as APR, sign-on bonuses and foreign transaction fees -- make sure you get something that fits with your lifestyle and spending habits.

Your credit card choice may also be affected by your credit score. Most of the cards we recommend require a good or excellent credit score, which is typically around 670 or higher. If you don't meet the credit criteria required, there are credit cards available that are specifically for those trying to rebuild credit, like secured credit cards. Alternatively, you can look into the best credit cards for no credit and the best credit cards for bad credit.

How we picked the best cash-back credit cards

We prioritized the cash-back credit cards that reward broad spending categories where Americans tend to spend significant amounts of money, instead of narrow categories like streaming services or "home improvement." Then we compared reward offerings with potential returns based on typical spending budgets derived from Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

In the end, we chose five high-value options from the crowded market. Some are no-annual-fee, flat-rate credit cards that earn the same amount on all purchases. Some require you make a certain qualifying purchase to start earning cash-back rewards. Some credit cards offer a sign-up bonus reward as well as cash back. Some are limited to specific spending categories (such as whether it's a grocery purchase, gas purchase, dining, transit or travel) but have a higher rewards rate, while others charge an annual fee. We then outlined important information for each card, including whether it has a transfer fee, bonus redemption thresholds or introductory APR. We also specified general credit requirements for eligibility (if you find you aren't eligible for a card that offers cash-back rewards, try a student credit card first).

Both credit cards offer valuable rewards on U.S. supermarket purchases without charging an annual fee. The right one for you largely depends on how savvy you are at maximizing rewards value and whether you even want to do it.

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card: Best for savvy credit card users

On the surface, The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card sounds like it offers less value — you earn just two points per $1 on up to $6,000 you spend annually at U.S. supermarkets (then one point per $1) instead of the 3% cash back you can earn in the same category with the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express.

But the card has some aces up its sleeve to make those points more valuable. For starters, you’ll earn 20% more points each billing period when you use the card 20 or more times on purchases.

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card also offers a welcome bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months. Depending on how you redeem your points, you could earn up to $100 worth of travel or gift cards.

The rewards come in the form of Membership Rewards points, which give you more flexibility and potential value. You can earn up to 1 cent per point if you redeem them with American Express for things like travel through AmexTravel.com or some gift cards.

But if you transfer your points to one of the card issuer’s hotel or airline partners, you could get a much better redemption rate.

Rewards aren’t the only reason to get the card, though. It also offers an introductory 0% APR on purchases for 15 months. Just keep in mind that after the intro period is up, the variable APR for purchases goes to 12.99% - 23.99%.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express: Best for people who want simplicity

While the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers more potential value, it can take a lot of time and research to maximize your rewards through transfer partners. If you prefer a simpler approach, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express may be the ticket.

The card offers a $200 bonus as a statement credit after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 6 months.

You’ll also earn 3% cash back on up to $6,000 you spend each year at U.S. supermarkets (then 1%), 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

You can redeem your cash back as a statement credit.

As you can see, the card’s rewards program is a little less complicated, and you don’t have to do a lot to maximize the value of your reward dollars. The card also offers an introductory 0% purchase APR promotion for the first 15 months after account opening. After 15 months, the variable purchase APR goes to 13.99% - 23.99%.

Want cash back rewards? Compare Cash Back Cards Now

The average American household spent $4,643 on groceries in 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. So having a credit card that offers great rewards on grocery spending is an excellent idea.

If you do, though, it’s important to balance the value of the card’s rewards program with its simplicity. If you don’t want to do a lot of legwork, it may be better to go with a straight cash back credit card. But if you’re an optimizer and enjoy the hunt for more value, a card that offers flexible points or miles may be a better choice.

Along with considering rewards, it’s also important to look at a card’s annual fee, as it may eat into the value of the cash back or points you’re earning. Also, consider other features you may want, like an introductory 0% APR promotion, a welcome bonus or other rewards and perks.

There’s no single best everyday credit card out there, so know what you want out of a card before you start shopping around.

Both of these credit cards are solid choices for consumers who want bonus rewards on U.S. supermarket purchases. But there are other cards that may be a better fit for what you need. Here are a few to consider.

You Can Get 20% Back at Amazon With the American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card Welcome Offer

*Editorial Note: The content in this article is based on the author’s opinions and recommendations alone. This article was accurate at time of publishing and terms and conditions may have changed. For the most accurate information, please consult the issuer website.

Even in challenging economic times, the credit card industry remains intensely competitive. So much so that you can still earn very generous welcome bonuses, even for cards with no annual fee. The best offers include cash back rewards for hundred dollars or even over $1,000, and sometimes even valuable promotional financing.

A perfect example of this kind of card is the Blue Cash Everyday® from American Express. It has an especially good cash back offer for purchases at Amazon — which is perfect timing because Prime Day is coming soon, and Black Friday and the rest of the holiday season follow.

Источник: https://money.com/american-express-blue-cash-everyday-review-amazon-bonus/

Our Take

While there are a few contenders for the best grocery credit card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a grocery deal that's hard amex blue cash everyday vs bank of america cash rewards beat.

The redemption amex blue cash everyday vs bank of america cash rewards for cash-back credit cards is either automatic or very simple.

Are you looking for a cash back credit card that offers both a set cash back reward and bonus categories? The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is among the popular cards you’ll find in this competitive space.

With this card, Amex offers 1% cash back on everyday purchases with bonus rewards attached to some popular spending categories. And there’s no annual fee (see rates and fees).

But are those bonus categories and the perks associated with this card enough to compete with other cash back credit cards that offer 2% on everyday purchases?

In this review, I’ll seek to answer that question by diving into the features of this card and comparing it to other popular cash back cards on the market.

Table of Contents

Team Clark has spent time evaluating the credit card market in several categories including the best cash back credit cards. We’ve compared the Blue Cash Everyday® Card to the best cards in this segment of the market. And we’ve determined that it’s a viable choice — thanks to its bonus cash back categories and lack of an annual fee.

As you’re deciding whether this card is a fit for you, please use this review in conjunction with Clark Howard’s 7 Rules for Using Credit Cards.

What Is the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express?

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a cash back rewards credit card that carries no annual fee.

This card offers a standard cash back return of just 1% on everyday purchases. So it relies on bonus purchase categories (at places like U.S. supermarkets, gas stations and department stores) to lure users away from cards that offer a higher “fixed” rate of cash back compensation such as the Citi Double Cash and the Paypal Cashback Mastercard.

Amex Blue Cash Everyday® Card: Specs and Perks

Let’s take a look at the fine print to examine some of the card’s perks and drawbacks:

Cash Back Categories

While 1% cash back is the baseline reward for this card, there are opportunities to earn more than that in some popular spending categories.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • 3% Cash Back at select U.S. Supermarkets: American Express likes to use this term as a way to rule out purchases at superstores like Walmart and Target and warehouse membership clubs such as Costco and Sam’s Club. This bonus is limited to $6,000 in purchases per year. But still, 3% on groceries at your local supermarket is a nice win. If you want to double down on this cash back perk, you may want to consider paying the $95 annual fee for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express (see rates and fees): It offers 6% cash back at select U.S. Supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year in purchases.
  • 2% Cash Back at U.S. Gas Stations: This bonus category does not have a spending cap, but it does have some restrictions on where you purchase your gasoline. For instance, gas purchased at superstores (Walmart) and warehouse clubs (Sam’s Club and Costco) also are restricted from this promotion. Instead, Amex gives examples of gas stations such as Shell, Mobil and Exxon as acceptable for this promotion.
  • 2% Cash Back at “Select” Department Stores: This language is confusing, and clarification on which department stores qualify for the 2% are well-hidden on the American Express website. But, never fear— I found the list here. Some notable department store names included: Bealls, Belk, Bloomingdale’s, Bon Ton Stores, Boscov’s, Century 21 Department Stores, Dillard’s, J.C. Penney (JCP), Come and take a look at me now lyrics, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Stein Mart.

It is worth noting that American Express pays out cash midland states bank routing number rockford il rewards in the form of “Reward Dollars,” which can be redeemed as statement credits.

Cardholder Benefits

  • Welcome Bonus: The standard welcome bonus for this card is a $200 statement credit if you spend at least $2,000 with the card within the first six months of membership. You can expect to receive the reward from this fairly easy-to-achieve bonus within 8-12 weeks after you meet the threshold.
  • Introductory 0% APR Period: This card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases for 15 months from the date of account opening (see rates and fees). This rates pretty well among cards in the cash back category, but money expert Clark Howard would caution you against spending exorbitantly on promotional APR offers. If you’re not careful, you may spend money you actually don’t have.
  • Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance: You can get secondary coverage on select car rentals if you use your Amex card to pay for the full balance of your rental and decline the insurance offered by the car rental company.

Cardholder Fees

Here’s a quick look at some of the fees you may encounter with this American Express card (see rates and fees):

  • Annual Fee: None.
  • Balance Transfer Fee: This card does not offer balance transfers as of this writing.
  • Cash Advance Fee: 5% of the total cash advance or $10, whichever is greater.
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to U.S. dollars.
  • Late Payment Fee: Up to $40 per instance.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card vs. Citi Double Cash and Blue Cash Preferred® Card

If you’re considering a cash back credit card, you’re likely looking for a card that is going to optimize your rewards based on your spending habits.

To determine if the Blue Cash Everyday Card is actually your best option, I decided to do a little comparison between two cards that are likely alternatives for the consumer who is considering this card.

Citi Double Cash

If your spending is sporadic and spans many different spending categories, a 2% cash back card like the Citi Double Cash may be the simplest way for you to get a good return on your purchases.

In this scenario of the Blue Cash Everyday versus the Citi Double Cash, the 3% supermarket reward is the only area in which the Amex card will consistently out-earn the set 2% that you’ll get with the Double Cash on all purchases (1% when you buy, 1% when you pay your bill).

To help understand the impact of a steady 2% return vs. the Blue Cash Everyday’s category bonus approach, here are a few monthly spending samples:

Sample Monthly Spending Scenarios

Sample A: If you spend $500 per month at supermarkets, $100 at department stores, $100 on gas, and $1,300 on miscellaneous spending:

  • Blue Cash Everyday: $32 cash back
  • Citi Double Cash: $40 cash back

Sample B: If you spend $300 per month at supermarkets, $50 at department stores, $200 on gas, and $1,000 on miscellaneous spending:

  • Blue Cash Everyday: $24 cash back
  • Citi Double Cash: $31 cash back

Sample C: If you spend $200 per month at supermarkets, $100 at department stores, $100 on gas and $1,500 on miscellaneous spending:

  • Blue Cash Everyday: $25 cash back
  • Citi Double Cash: $38 cash back

As you can see, the Double Cash pretty consistently outperforms the Blue Cash Everyday, even when you focus on spending in Amex’s bonus categories.

That’s why money expert Clark Howard carries the Citi Double Cash in his wallet as a cash back credit card and would endorse it over the Blue Cash Everyday.

Blue Cash Preferred® from American Express

If you’re considering the Blue Cash Everyday on the merits of its top rewards category (3% cash back on U.S. Supermarkets), it’s probably fair to consider whether or not you’re actually better off paying $95 per year to double that reward. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers that opportunity.

Both cards limit the grocery reward to $6,000 in annual spending. That means you’ll cap out at $180 in potential cash back reward bonus with the Blue Cash Everyday Card and at $360 with the Blue Cash Preferred Card. That $180 spread in rewards easily covers the $95 annual fee attached to the Blue Cash Preferred, but you’ll need to do the math to see if you’re actually going to max out this reward with your annual grocery bill.

The Blue Cash Preferred also offers 6% cash amex blue cash everyday vs bank of america cash rewards on select U.S. streaming purchases, as well as 3% cash back on U.S. gas and transportation purchases. So there are other areas in which you could pay off that $95 annual fee.

Final Thoughts

Are you considering adding the Amex Blue Cash Everyday® Card to your wallet? Let’s review some of the major pros and cons of the card before you make your final decision:

Amex Blue Cash Everyday® Card: Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Bonus spending categories can earn you up to 3% cash back on purchases at supermarketsOnly 1% cash back on everyday purchases
Easy-to-achieve welcome bonusCan’t claim grocery or gas bonuses at popular retailers like Walmart and Costco
15 months of 0% APR on new purchases from date of account openingWelcome bonus offers are targeted and may vary

Bottom Line: It’s hard to pinpoint the perfect consumer for this cash back credit card. If you’re serious about dedicating yourself to a supermarket cash back card from American Express, you may want to consider spending the extra $95 in annual fees to get 6% back from the Blue Cash Preferred. And if you are looking for straightforward cash back rewards, you may be better off with the steady returns of a 2% cash back card.

Both the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Expressand Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express recently introduced great welcome offers. Plus, people are more budget-conscious than they’ve been in a while, so I thought it’d be good to compare Amex’s two Blue Cash cards: the Everyday and Preferred.

I hold both cards — and will explain why in a couple of minutes.

Blue Cash Everyday® vs. Blue Cash Preferred: Differences and Similarities

Both cards earn Reward Dollars (which can be redeemed toward statement credit) and have base earnings of 1%.

The cards also appear on the CardRatings “Best Credit Cards of 2021” list — with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earning the “Best Card for Families” award.

That’s pretty much where their similarities end.

Take dr berk look.

Let’s compare and contrast!

A Quick Word About Rewards Dollars

Both cards earn Reward Dollars. You can apply them against your balance whenever you have at least $25 worth of Reward Dollars stored up.

And that’s really my only beef with the cards.

A minimum of $25 Reward Dollars is needed to apply statement credit to American Express Blue Cash card.

I have $1.31 in Reward Dollars just kind of sitting there with my Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express. And because I rarely use the card, who knows if I’ll ever hit $25. Although, the welcome bonus and Amazon promotion more than make up for it. I’m not losing sleep. Still, it’s sort of the principle of the matter.

But as long as you have at least $25 Reward Dollars, you can apply however many you want — whenever you want.

This is one area where Chase’s Ultimate Rewards cards are superior to Amex’s cashback cards — because you don’t need to sit around until you have 2500 URs in order to redeem them.

Save money with Amex Offers and cashback portals!

Annual Fee

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express has no annual fee (which is always nice!) (See Rates & Fees.)

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express runs you $95 a year. But the current promotion waives the first year’s annual fee. So if you’ve ever wanted the BCP, now’s the time. (See Rates & Fees.)

Smiling child holding a pineapple while grocery shopping in a supermarket

U.S. Supermarkets

This is the reason my wife and I have the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. It awards 6% back on purchases made at U.S. supermarkets. That benefit is capped at $6,000 in annual spending, though.

After that, we move to either my American Express® Gold Card (4X at U.S. supermarkets, up to $25,000 in annual spending) or use another card with any grocery promotions. (Chase’s Pay Yourself Back has been helpful for us.)

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express offers 3% back at U.S. supermarkets and is also capped at $6,000 yearly on those purchases.

And here’s where your decision could be made. I know annual fees stink. But if you max out the Preferred‘s 6% perk, you’ll earn a total of $360 back — or $265 after factoring in the annual fee.

If you max out the Everyday‘s 6%, you’re earning only $180.

So if you spend six grand at supermarkets every year, getting the annual fee card actually awards you $85 more than the no annual fee card.

Select U.S. Streaming Services

Here’s another great feature of the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. It awards 6% back on purchases made with select U.S. streaming services. And plenty of them qualify.

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express offers its 1% base on these purchases.

Cars and gas pumps are seen at a Shell gas station in Los Angeles, California.

U.S. Gas Stations

Both cards bonus purchases made at U.S. gas stations. This can be extra nice when you take advantage of Amex Offers featuring gas stations.

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express has the edge here: 3% back compared to the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express‘ 2%. (We use our Citi Costco card for gas purchases unless there’s a great Amex Offer.)

Samara, Russia - June 8, 2019: Uber taxi goes down the street in the afternoon. Modern city taxi

Transit

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express earns a respectable 3% on purchases made with taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses, etc. (I use my Chase Sapphire Reserve for these; it offers 3X, which I can redeem at 4.5 cents per point when booking travel through Chase.)

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express awards only 1%.

Macy's Westfield Topanga Plaza near Woodland Hills in Canoga Park, CA

Select U.S. Department Stores

I’ll be honest: unless there’s an Amex Offer at a store where I actually need something, this benefit does nothing for me. But it may be great for you.

The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express awards 2% back on purchases made with these retailers:

  • Bealls
  • Belk
  • Bloomingdale’s
  • Bon Ton Stores
  • Boscov’s
  • Century 21 Department Stores
  • Dillard’s
  • J.C. Penney (JCP)
  • Kohl’s
  • Lord & Taylor
  • Macy’s
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Sears
  • Stein Mart

The Preferred awards only 1%.

Introductory APR

Both cards offer an introductory 0% APR for new approvals. The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Expressgives the perk to new cardholders 15 months from the date of card membership approval. But the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express comes in three months shorter 12 months.

So Which Card is Better?

This all comes down to your spending habits and budget.

American Express Blue Cash Preferred Credit Card

If you spent a lot of money at supermarkets and have a bunch of streaming subscriptions, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express is the way to go.

If you’re absolutely against annual fees, then consider the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express. But remember the math from the U.S. Supermarket section above — and don’t cheat yourself out of extra money simply to make a point.

Why I Hold Both Cards

My wife and I have had the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express for several years. It’s our go-to card for grocery shopping (until we hit the $6k limit) and streaming. We easily earn back the $95 annual fee — and several hundred dollars on top of that.

I never really planned on holding the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express. The Blue Cash is, for my spending, a superior card.

But a promotion last fall awarded 20% cashback on Amazon purchases (up to $200 back) and carried a $150 welcome bonus. So I got the Everyday card simply to help pay for a new MacBook Pro (and related accessories) I bought through Amazon. That shaved almost $400 off everything. And the card gave me 15 months with no APR.

Unless you really want the Everyday card right now, consider waiting. I’m hoping Amex runs a similar Amazon promo later in the year.

Final Approach

The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express and Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express are two solid options for cashback cards. The Preferred is, in my estimation, much better. Its annual fee is easily negated thanks to its 6% and 3% bonus categories.

Take a look.

American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card Review

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

In my opinion, American Express is the best credit card company out there in terms of perks (I’ll highlight some in this post). One of the best cards in their lineup is the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. This post will highlight it’s best features to help you decide if this is the right card for you.

American Express Blue Cash Everyday Cash Back Program

The Blue Cash Everyday Card replaces American Express’s retired Blue Cash card. The old card was OK, but good rewards did not kick in until you hit $6,500 per year in spend. The Blue Cash Everyday card has a much simpler and likely higher reward system.

american express blue cash everyday cardHighlighting the cash back rewards program is 3% at U.S. supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%). On top of that is 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations & select US dept stores, and 1% cash back on other purchases. Terms and limitations apply.

Another big benefit is that cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.

With gas and groceries costing what they have and being the two biggest non home-related expenses for most people, this could be a great cashback card.

The Blue Cash Everyday card is also offering the opportunity to get a$150 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months!

There is no limit to the amount of rewards you can earn, no spend minimum, and no rotating categories.

No Annual Fee

In order to be considered a personal use credit card keeper, in my opinion, the card has to have no annual fee. The Blue Cash Everyday card receives a check mark for meeting this criteria.

Introductory APR Period

Another nice benefit of this card is that you get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, then a variable rate, which is based on your creditworthiness and other factors. I would recommend paying your monthly balance in full EVERY single month.

Other American Express Benefits

American Express has a ton of perks with their cards. All material purchases with the card get a 1-year extended warranty. This is a huge benefit on large purchases.

The American Express purchase protection plan protects your purchases against theft or accidental damage for up to 90 days.

There is free roadside assistance and free rental car insurance.

And last, but not least, I’ve always been impressed with American Express’s customer service. They are available 24/7.

Final Thoughts on the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express

I’d put the Blue Cash Everyday Card up there as one of the top five personal use credit cards, along with its cousin and the best grocery rewards card, the American Express Blue Cash Preferred® Card.

It offers very generous rewards in some of the most popular categories with no spend minimums – and no annual fee. Not many credit cards can say that.
