The Amazon baby wishlist: everything you need to know

If you’re pregnant and thinking of setting up some kind of online wishlist to help you keep track of things you need to buy for your new baby, you might want to look into Amazon’s baby wishlist as one possible option.

It’s free to set up and you can choose one free item, from a selection of available products, when you spend your first £20.

The welcome gift is a Tommee Tippee Nappy Bin & Child’s Farm Baby Bathtime Sample Pack OR Philips Avent Snuggle Cuddly Toy with Dummy & Child’s Farm Baby Bathtime Sample Pack, when you use the promo code: GIFT21 and spend your first £20.

Amazon Baby Wishlist Discount

As well as the welcome gift, Amazon is offering an ongoing discount on baby products to everyone who creates a baby wishlist. This is definitely something to take advantage of if you’re buying a big item, such as a pushchair.

Here’s how the discount works:

  • If you spend £200, you get 10% off (use code WISHLIST10)
  • If you spend £500, you get 15% off (use code WISHLIST15)
  • If you spend £800, you get 20% off (use code WISHLIST20)

What details do I need to provide to set up the Amazon baby wishlist?

To get going with your wishlist, you’ll have to provide a few personal details, including your:

  • name
  • email address
  • shipping address
  • due date

And you can include a co-owner for the list, too, like your partner.

Before you sign up, you’ll also be asked if you want to get:

  • news about exclusive discounts
  • alerts when certain items on your wishlist have been bought
  • the Amazon family newsletter.

(You can opt out of any of these if you want).

Why set up an online baby wishlist?

An online wishlist like the Amazon one can definitely help you to keep organised when you’re trying to keep track of things you might want to buy in time for your new arrival.

You can browse products, add them to your list or remove them if you don’t think they’re for you after all.

We particularly like the fact that with the Amazon baby wishlist you can see what other parents have bought and what they thought of their purchase (most products have hundreds of reviews) – particularly good if you’re splashing out on big times like a buggy, and handy to have that info all in one place.

In addition it’s useful that you can share the wishlist with friends and relatives (like a wedding gift list) so that you don’t run the risk of being gifted the same thing twice. You’ll get a link and options to share via social media, and email.

MadeForMums forum member jellybabymumdrum had an Amazon baby wishlist when she was pregnant, and tells us that having it has helped her to control what she buys  – we know that the excitement of a new baby on the way can get you a little bit over-excited on the spending front sometimes! “I have an Amazon Baby wishlist set up,” she says, “so I can normally contain myself when doing a bit of  ‘online shopping’ by putting it in to my wishlist.”

How will the Amazon wishlist help you get stuff for your baby?

As well as being an easy way to keep track of products you like, and share it with people who might want to buy you things for the baby, having an Amazon baby wishlist means you:

  • get different gifts each month (when you spend a minimum of £10)
  • save money with discounts on products
  • get limited time offers

There’s also an inspiration section to give you some ideas if you’re not sure what you need.

There’s a really handy display that shows you how many things from your wishlist have been bought, as well as whether you’ve requested gift cards instead, plus a countdown to how many days until your baby arrives.

If it sounds like something you think you’d find useful you can sign up on the registration page

How to claim your free gift

You’ll need to go to the product page of the free gift and add one to your baby wishlist.

Next, you’ll need to add at least £20 worth of eligible baby products to your basket. These must be products sold by Amazon and not one of their partners.

Proceed to checkout, where on the Review Your Order page, under Order Summary, you’ll see the promotion has been applied to your total.

In order for the promotion to apply you’ll need to make sure you choose the same delivery option for all items.

And with the variety of products available on Amazon, you can get the essentials you need all from one spot.

Take advantage of the Completion Discount. This benefit provides a one-time discount on certain items remaining on your registry. You can redeem it 60 days before your due date and only you, as the registrant, can receive it. You will get a 10 percent discount, but if you are an Amazon Prime Member, you can receive up to 15 percent off.

Your senders get discounts too. Just like when purchasing regular merchandise for themselves, your senders can receive discounted shipping for your registry items. Free Super Saver Shipping is available on orders over a specific dollar amount and express shipping for Amazon Prime Members may also apply. Your senders just need to check the items for shipping eligibility and restrictions.

Enjoy a universal registry. If you have ever used the Amazon 1-Button App browser extension to add products to your Wish List, you can do the same for your registry. For example, maybe you found the exact car seat you want on a site other than Just click that little button and add it to your Amazon Baby Registry. If you do not already have it, this convenient tool is available for most browsers.

A Flurry of Features

Now that you know the benefits of creating an Amazon Baby Registry, it's time to move onto those fun features. With a simple setup, checklist to get you started, helpful ideas, and registry sharing options, you will be filling up the nursery with goodies in no time.

Baby Registry Settings

When you first create your baby registry, you will enter basic details such as name, email address, and due date. But after the registry is created, you can adjust additional settings to tailor it to you and your little one.

Select Registry Settings from the top of your registry and pop open the About You section to verify your basic information. Then, head down to the About Your Baby section.

Here you can enter the baby's name and gender if you like or just leave everything as a surprise. You can also adjust your due date and choose if this is your first baby as well as if you are having multiples. Next, add a nice greeting for your friends and family to see when they visit your registry. The greeting is a terrific way to welcome your registry guests and thank them in advance for visiting.

Finally, open the Registry Settings section. You can choose gift and email options and enter a baby shower date if you have one. In the Who can see your registry? area, you must choose from Public, Shared, or Private and each displays a brief description.

Your registry settings can be changed at any time. Just remember to click the Save Changes button when you are finished.

The Starter Checklist

It can be tough for new parents to think of every, single item that they will need for their baby. And even those who are expecting their second or third child can benefit from the registry's handy checklist feature.

The checklist takes you through categories of baby items. Browse and add products for bath time, diapering, feeding, health and safety, and decorating the nursery. This is a great way to make sure you have what you and your baby need every day. The checklist is displayed on your main registry page, so you can jump right in.

Ideas and Inspiration

At the top of your registry, you will see a link to the Ideas and Inspiration section. Here, you can check out additional checklists for bargains and grandparents, see the most popular products, and browse brand or video guides.

So if you are interested in which video monitor is on most people's registries or how to pick out the right crib, this is a helpful section to visit.

Add Items Easily

Once you create your baby registry, adding items to it could not be simpler. When you land on a product description page, just click the Add to Baby Registry button on the right. Just remember to choose options such as size or color first.

If you would like to edit items you have added, just click the Edit link listed for the item. You can then adjust the priority, category, and quantity as well as include comments.

Sharing Options

Amazon's Baby Registry offers convenient sharing options. These are displayed at the top of your list of registry items. You can share a link to your registry with friends on Facebook, followers on Twitter, or via email. Your registry setting for visibility must be set to Public or Shared to display these Share With Friends options.

Most people assume that expectant parents will create and share a baby registry. But if you prefer to go a different route for sharing, other than the built-in features, here are a couple of suggestions.

  • Create an ecard. Maybe you would like to send a cute ecard to your friends and family announcing your new addition. Pop open the email icon from the Share With Friends option, copy the link provided for your registry, and then insert it into the ecard you create.
  • Include it in your shower invitations. If your friends or family are throwing you a baby shower and mailing invitations, they can write that you are registered with Amazon Baby Registry. Then, set your visibility setting to Public and others can search for your registry. They just click the Gift Cards & Registry option in the navigation and select Baby Registry to start their search.

The Thank You List

You will notice a link to Thank You List & Returns in your registry navigation. If you want to start those Thank You cards early or need to return something from the registry, this is where you will go.

Just keep in mind that this area contains items that are being purchased along the way. So, if you are still adding products to your registry and do not want to know who has bought what so far, you may want to hold off on visiting this section.

Helpful Tips and Details

  • To access your Amazon Baby Registry, select Account & Lists from the top navigation. Under Your Lists, click Baby Registry.
  • You, your friends, and your family can access your registry from the Amazon mobile app.
  • You cannot track items purchased by others from your registry. Only purchasers can track the packages.
  • To delete a registry you no longer need, return to the Baby Registry Settings section and click the Delete your registry button at the bottom.
  • For additional information or questions, click the Baby Registry FAQ from the top of your registry.

Prepare to Welcome Your Little One

If you are an expectant parent, whether birth or adoption, the Amazon Baby Registry is a super way to pick out baby items. You can browse an enormous selection of products, receive discounts, share your registry with loved ones, and reduce the risk of receiving duplicate items.

The Minimalist Baby Registry Checklist

Putting together your baby registry is nothing if not overwhelming.

There are over 60,000 options on alone.

You already know you don't need everything marketed to parents-to-be.

As soon as you enter the world of, say, the "baby" category on Amazon, you're bombarded with things you may have never even considered, along with marketing messages preying on your fears and concern for your baby's wellbeing.

After all, throughout pregnancy, you're biologically primed to "feather your nest" with anything and everything you may need to keep your baby safe and comfortable.

Plus, you may have conversations with other well-meaning parents in which they mention things you never even though about, things like "pee-pee tents," and "diaper genies."

(Scroll down to see the "What to Skip" list for more on this.)

Having been there, done that, twice (and come out on the other side with a six year old and a one year old) I can tell you definitively that you don’t need most of what is suggested.

My husband and I created our minimalist baby registry six years ago for our first baby. We were planning to continue our low-stuff nomadic lifestyle, so everything we purchased needed to travel with us or be easy to pass along when we were done with it.

I'll share the results of hours of pre-purchase research and road testing. I have recently updated this list with what I've learned years down the road, including what I did the same — and differently — for baby #2.

The checklist will be helpful for you or any friends or family members you have who are expecting a baby and are on a budget or living a minimalist or low-clutter lifestyle.

Traveling with a baby

This list will also be helpful for nomadic families or travel lovers who don't want to give up those weekend getaways and vacations abroad just because they are having baby. If you travel frequently, it's important for your baby’s comfort (and your own!) that you can easily create a similar environment on the road as the one at home. Therefore, you don’t want too many specialty items at home that you can’t easily take with you to be part of your baby’s daily routine.

time range covered

The list is intended to provide for newborns and babies up to 6 months old, but many things will serve long past that 6-month mark.

This post contains links that may be affiliate links. As always, all opinions are 100% my own and not for sale.

1. The sleeping situation: a play yard with mattress, protector, and 3 fitted sheets

We use a portable play yard for a safe and comfy place for our baby to sleep all the time. No crib. Our version from Graco (not an affiliate link) came with a removable bassinet that hangs inside it and can be used in the early months for sleeping.

Once he passed the weight limit (listed on the product), we removed the upper bassinet and he sleeps in the bottom, an on additional mattress purchased separately. It’s fine for babies to sleep on the thin mattress that comes with the play yard, but I wanted something a bit thicker on top of that for every day sleeping. Make sure the mattress fits very snugly so you don’t have gaps between the mattress and the sides of the bed. Get fitted sheets that fit your play yard added mattress.

If I were going to be in the same place for years, I might buy a traditional crib, but a foldable play yard is a great option for full-time sleeping for us. It travels well, and our first baby slept well when we traveled since it was the same environment he was in at home. Now it’s the same with our second baby.

A play yard is also light in weight and has two wheels, so it can easily be dragged into another room, if say, you want to catch up on your email while the baby naps next to you in your office space. I did this for a while back when our baby was napping in a different room than where he sleeps in at night.

2. Baby carrier for baby wearing

I made a decision to avoid strollers for the first four months and I'd make the same decision again. Having only the carrier was great for bonding with my baby, gaining strength, and losing the pregnancy weight. But mostly it's about bonding with baby and keeping that little cherub's ear right on your heartbeat, skin to skin, as often as possible.

There are a lot of options, so here I’ve saved you the hassle of looking through every one. It's really important to get one that suits newborn up to 40 pounds and that you can choose from lots of placement options. Meaning you’ll want to have the option do front inward-facing carry, front forward-facing carry, rear forward-facing carry (backpack style), and side hip carry.

I bought an Ergobaby first, but later replaced it with the EVEN more adjustable and ergonomic LILLEbaby. I felt a bit fooled by Ergobaby into buying a special infant insert that I then had to store, unused, because he quickly grew out of it. I couldn't donate it because it's such a specific piece. Also, the one I bought couldn’t do front forward-facing carry. Turns out they have one that does it all, I just bought the wrong one.

The LILLEbaby doesn't require any extra accessories. There's a strap inside that easily folds away when you don't need it; you put a folded blanket over the strap to support your newborn. (You could do this with Ergobaby but LILLEbaby actually suggests it instead of offering a pricey insert that will only last a couple months).

The LILLEbaby also has other advantages over Ergobaby, including a few small but very thoughtful design improvements, such as a pad to protect your chest from the front strap when doing a backpack style carry. Overall, my sense was that the LILLEbaby designers care more about moms and dads because the product is slightly more adjustable, a touch better designed. And just a little better makes all the difference.

One more mistake you can avoid because I made it for you: purchase one that is 100% cotton, and avoid options listed as “airflow” material. It simply isn’t. That layered mesh material is harsher against baby’s skin, and the tiny holes catch any curd-textured effluvia, including cotton cheese, poop, and throw-up, locking them deep in the fibers where they are hard to wash out. Yes, I know this from personal experience. Look closely at the photos as they change and update often. Despite my mistake, I totally love my LILLEbaby. Heartily recommended.

3. Car seat

Always a must. And please, please, get one that is easy to uninstall and reinstall. Especially if you travel a lot.

You may want to get one that is part of a travel (stroller) system. See below for a recommendation on a stroller travel system.

4. Stroller

We didn't get a stroller until our baby was more than 4 months old. When we did buy a stroller, we got away with a nice umbrella stroller.

Later, I bought a used BOB running stroller which I have mixed feelings about. (The feelings: they are not allowed in airports due to their large size, but that size is useful sometimes for protection in a crowd, and it's certainly nice to run with your baby, but on the other hand, running is important alone time if you can get a sitter, friend, or partner to care for your baby while you take care of yourself.)

If you want to make a travel system stroller part of your registry, someone I trust just did a whole lot of research and settled on an UPPAbaby travel system which works from newborn up to preschool age and includes a car seat. It’s a pricey option but you may be able to squeeze it into the budget since you’re going quality over quantity as a minimalist. it is really nice to have a system that works seamlessly.

For baby #2 I was gifted a pre-loved travel system and I have really enjoyed it.

5. Video or sound monitor

This was not on my original list and I regret it. I spent too much time anxious about my baby when he was napping. I didn't have a way to check him without going into his room, which would potentially wake him up. I'd recommend a video monitor so you can do a quick visual check every time your "mommy anxiety" kicks in.

However, I've heard that it's best to avoid the monitors that go with you when you're running errands or on a date night. Get someone you trust to watch over your baby, and trust them. Otherwise you'll be on the monitor the whole time you're out.

1st Update - So far I have NOT used a monitor with my 2nd babe. We’ll see if that changes. This list is an ongoing experiment. I think what I’ve learned is I have less anxiety baby #2.

2nd Update - I’ve come to the conclusion that a baby monitor is not necessary if you are low anxiety (anxiety may be lower with a second baby) and live in a home where you can hear your baby cry from any room. Those of you with higher anxiety and/or a large or soundproof home may want a sound or video monitor so you can hear or see when you baby wakes up from a nap or at night if you’re not room-sharing.

6. Diapers and wipes

We started with size newborn diapers and we had to size up about once a month, so don't buy too many. Those little bums grow fast! We used about 100 per month in general, and maybe more those first couple months when we changed him more often than was necessary since we were learning his habits (and the amazing capacity of diapers). We used disposable.

For baby #2, we’re using disposable diapers and cloth diapers. I use disposable when it’s easier (traveling, night time, and out of the house) and cloth diapers occasionally — around the house or when I want to keep a few diapers out of the landfill and save some money.

I bought a few second-hand cloth diapers from a friend whose kids are all now potty trained. I found that it wasn’t quite enough. They were a few different brands, and some had Velcro that had worn out, so I couldn’t use all of them.

So, for the last four months, I’ve been testing these Alva Baby cloth diapers with my second kid. And I really like them. I like that they come in a set, and they are easy to clean. The only thing I’d change about the Alvas is I wish they had hook and eye (Velcro) closure. The snaps take about 1.5 seconds each to close, and there are three on each side. One of the other brands I have (pre-owned) has a hook and eye closure that takes about one second on each side. Two seconds vs nine seconds to close up a fresh diaper may not seem like a lot, but when your baby is wiggly and eager to get back to exploring, it is a long time.

I’ll keep using the well-rated ones I have, linked above, but if I were to do it over again, I might try something like the Bambino Mio Onesize, although they are significantly more expensive. Update: At about fifteen months my little one figured out how to undo the Velcro on our one hook-and-eye cloth diaper, so now I say, stick with the strong snaps of the Alva Baby diapers.

7. White noise machine

We love this this white noise machine. It's small and portable. It has lasted us for years. We used the one machine with both babies and it is still going strong, five years later. It has helped me get great sleep in a city hotel under construction. It helps our kids sleep while we’re watching Netflix. Highly recommended.

8. Easy clothing

Sometimes I think the designers of baby clothes don't actually have children themselves. I was shocked by how difficult many baby clothes are to use. Seriously. I get sweaty just dressing my baby. This is an area that a good designer needs to take on.

In the meantime, buy a few onesies, rompers, pants, soft hats, and socks. Make sure everything is soft. Your friends are: zippers and minimal snaps. Your enemies are: buttons and too many snaps. Also, easy access to the diaper area is key. Kids grow really fast (and in spurts) so clothing is a buy-as-needed area.

Update: My sister introduced to me to this brand and I love it. They are the easiest and cutest organic baby clothes I have discovered so far. The two-way zipper on the romper makes diaper changes easier.

9. Large washable underpads (4)

I didn’t know these existed until I went to the hospital to give birth. Then we sort of not exactly accidentally stole one from the hospital. (It was my bed pad giving me a little extra security of not staining the sheets during recovery. ) When I called the hospital to confess our crime, they told me, understandably, to just keep it.

It has been amazing for so many things. For changing diapers on, we just placed it on the floor or bed and changed the baby there. We’d throw it in the washer and dryer and it would always come out clean and like new. Oh, it's also good for tummy time. It travels well too, folding up to the size of a light jacket. Now it doubles as a "in case" pad under our older kid’s sheets for night potty training. We bought more to use for our new baby.

It’s likely the hospital sourced it from a medical supply company. However, I think I found it on Amazon for you. Check out this 4-pack. AMAZING. Also good for pets? What? How many uses does this product have? And they are SO washable.

10. Packaged snacks stashes and (very specific ) water cups with lids. (for you, breastfeeding mom)

Those first few weeks of breastfeeding were tough. When I'd finally get my baby latched on, I'd settle back into the chair, couch, or bed, and immediately get hit with undeniable, dying-in-the-desert thirst along with hunger pangs. But I couldn't move because that would disrupt the latch we'd just worked so hard for. So usually I'd yell for my husband to bring me water and snacks. But sometimes he couldn't hear me or wasn't home.

So hide PACKAGED SNACKS around your house. Before you go into labor, put them under your mattress, between couch cushions, inside of decorative pottery, EVERYWHERE!

And you'll usually only have one hand available, so don't sit down with a bottle of water. (I can't open a bottle of water with one hand. Just me?) And don't sit down with an open top cup because like me, you might be clumsy from sleep deprivation and that water will spill. You need a jumbo cup with a lid and straw.

When baby is hungry, first fill your cup. Literally. You won't want to, because when your baby is crying all you can think about is making your baby feel better, but learn from my experience, please, so you don't spend that precious breastfeeding time feeling thirsty and deprived.

11. Breast pump

In some places your insurance company is required by law to provide one to you. This is vital to have before the baby comes, as you'll want to have it on hand during those first few days and weeks of learning how to breastfeed – when you're engorged and the baby hasn't learned how to effectively nurse on a very full breast.

(Again, learn from my mistakes. My pump hadn’t yet arrived I was one udderly miserable dairy queen that first week. I had to bring a specialist in to help me get the milk to come out the first time. A pump would have solved the problem in a few seconds.)

When my pump finally arrived, I loved it. You want to go for a “hospital grade” machine. While I didn’t try other pumps, (so I can’t compare it to others) I do highly recommend the one I chose from my insurance company’s offerings. I gave it away after the first baby and purchased a new one for the second. It is available on Amazon here.

12. 2-4 bottles with nipples for pumped breast milk

If you’re going back to work full time, and plan to pump, you may need a cooler and more than four bottles.

However, for starters, 2-4 bottles should be fine until you get a feel for things.

If you get the above recommended breast pump, it comes with two bottles. You can also register for this bundle which comes with four bottles and a tote bag.

13. Bottle brush for cleaning bottles and nipples

Specialized baby bottle brushes come with a larger brush for inside the bottle and a smaller part for cleaning nipples.

14. Breast milk freezer bags

It’s nice to have special bags that look different than regular freezer storage bags. Breast milk bags are tall and narrow, making them easier to pour into a bottle than your standard zip lock bags.

15. 4-10 lightweight swaddling blankets

These are for swaddling and burping and cleaning random baby messes. These won't last long for swaddling but will be vital for many months for those sudden spills that come out of babies.

16. Sleep sacks

The swaddling days don't last long for most babies, and blankets get kicked off or become hazardous. Get several sleep sacks for chilly nights when your baby’s sleepwear won't provide enough warmth on its own.

As a bonus, a sleep sack keeps the kid safe in bed after that age (about a year) when they start trying to put a leg over the edge of the bed to climb out.

17. Baby soap or wash

I haven’t formed a preference for one particular baby wash. I tend to buy something locally that seems as mild, gentle, and natural as possible.

18. Something for sore nipples

Lanolin is the recommended product. I tried it, but then switched to coconut oil. I prefer the smell, and that it's from a plant rather than an animal. And it seems to heal my skin fast. Whatever you choose, have it on hand before you give birth because sore nipples are as bad as they sound.

19. Baby oil/moisturizer

I prefer a natural plant oil like olive, coconut, almond, or jojoba. These seemed to do the job just as well as a cream specifically branded for babies. Moisturizers marketed to parents for babies tend to have long ingredient listings. It seems simpler and healthier to me to put one ingredient at a time on your baby.

20. Diaper rash cream (a tube per month)

If you are lucky, your baby will respond well to coconut oil to heal and prevent diaper rash, thus items # 18, 19, and 20 can all be covered with a jar or two of organic coconut oil. For our first baby, coconut oil ended up being more effective than the leading diaper rash cream, if a bit messier. It smelled better too!

21. Pacifier (maybe a couple with different types of nipples for baby to try)

I remember being worried that giving my first son a pacifier would make him addicted to it, or confuse him and make it more difficult for him to breastfeed. If I remember correctly, I tried a pacifier after he’d learned to latch on to the breast. And then it made my life so much easier. At some point around 7 or 8 months old he started dropping the pacifier out of his mouth frequently and I took that as a cue that he was done with it. There were a few days of adjustment but then he no longer missed it. Same with my second baby.

We used the ever-popular Philips Avent Soothie pacifiers. I think someone gifted us the one attached to a plush toy animal, and that was a big hit because it was hard to lose and gave our baby something to hold onto.

22. Super seat/stuck seat

The gist is: somewhere you can stick your kid nearby and you know they're safe and occupied while you take a shower. It's a peace of mind thing.

We started using the super seat once baby could hold his head up on his own. Our version was called a super seat because it is a supportive chair, a booster seat, a snack tray, and a toy-holder all in one. Later, he used the booster part in place of a high chair. It came with straps to safely attach to a regular kitchen chair.

We bought something very similar to this (same brand, different toy theme). However, were I to do it again, I’d probably try to find one with higher ratings. There were a few buggy things that could be better. I don’t think toys need to be attached. Babies quickly tire of the attached toys and want to play with something else (see below section on skipping toys). Also, over time the hard-to-clean toys get undeniably… gunky.

23. A napper or co-sleeper.

It's nice to have something safe you can put your baby down in when you want them napping near you, but you don't want to put them in a crib or drag a play yard to your space. They'll quickly grow out of a napper, so make it affordable or get it pre-owned. In Finland they use a cardboard box! It really just needs to be a flat, safe, comfortable place for your baby to sleep. Do your research and get something that suits your lifestyle and parenting style. Ukraine, where I had my second baby, has started doing the Finnish box thing, and I used the box the hospital gave us for that purpose in the early weeks.

24. Forehead thermometer

I had to pick up one of these in a hurry after our son was born. Although the hospital actually gave us a thermometer in a baby gift pack, it was a standard insertion thermometer.

An insertion thermometer is the last thing your baby wants to deal with when she or he is feeling ill. And I can’t blame a baby for not wanting cold metal stuck in any orifice, at any time, sick or healthy. So I found myself delaying taking my son’s temperature when I suspected he had a fever. As soon as we got a forehead thermometer my parental anxiety decreased quite a bit as it made taking his temperature, and usually finding out there was no fever, easy.

I purchased mine in a CVS store, but if you, wise planner that you are, want to put one on an Amazon Registry, here’s a suggestion.

25. Baby Movement Monitor

I almost left this one off the list. It had a tendency to slip off my baby’s diaper, which meant that there were a few false alarms that had me up in the middle of the night, heart racing, before I checked on him and saw he was fine.

However. Last night I had a vivid dream taking me back to those early days of caring for my newborn. I remember how hard it was to actually get restful sleep because I was worried he would stop breathing in the middle of the night. So this item is going back on the list.

I should also tell you I didn’t suffer from anxiety before having a baby. Parenthood changes you in unpredictable ways, and for me there was a huge increase in anxiety.

So my final verdict is that if this device (we bought twice, once for each baby, and recommend the Snuza Hero Baby Movement Monitor) will help you have peace of mind so you can snatch some good sleep when your baby is sleeping, get it.

I think it’s worth it in those very early weeks if you have a little anxiety or tend to wake up at night just to check that your baby’s breathing is fine. (Which, just FYI, is normal new parent behavior.)

Now that you know the 25 essentials, here’s what you can save your money on.

1. Toys

Babies are entertained easily. Crinkling paper. A spoon. Their own ear. Toys are really not necessary until later. Plus you'll unavoidably collect toys as gifts because they are fun for friends and family to buy for you.

2. Specialized baby moisturizers

As I suggested earlier, these can contain nasty chemicals. Just stick with pure plant oils like coconut, olive, and jojoba. Always check your baby for signs of an allergic reaction when putting something new on their skin.

3. High chair

I never understood high chairs. They're huge. Why buy such a big thing when you can get a small booster seat and the baby can sit with the family at the table? Plus their height, higher than a normal chair, means a fall would be more dangerous. And, here’s a parenting secret no one talks about: every baby falls. There’s gonna be a fall. All you can do is your best. But they’re gonna fall. Make sure it’s from as low a point as possible.

4. A changing table

A huge piece of unnecessary furniture. Also a falling risk. Floor or bed changes are easy and safer.

5. Pee pee tent

Alert: if you have a boy, he might pee on you when you change his diaper. Pee pee tents are little tents you put over his penis during that brief window of risk while you change his diaper. Just put your hand over the stream so it doesn't hit your face. Otherwise, let the guy get some airflow during diaper changes.

6. Wipes warmer

Nope. Get used to the refreshing coolness of wipes in their natural state, kid.

7. Diaper genie

Just put those dirty diapers in a bag and tie it off. Maybe get a trash can with a lid if the smell is really bad. You don't need a specialty trash can (with moving parts liable to break and specialty supplies to be purchased at regular intervals).

8. Anything with buttons or beads

Buttons on clothes take too much time and can pop off and become a choking hazard. Beads, which can also become a choking hazard, are generally obviously avoided for babies. However, I’ve noticed a trend of making babies wear a necklace of amber beads for supposed pain-relieving benefits. Amber may be soothing to look at or touch, but has no other helpful benefits when worn, and your baby will be safer without the potential choking and strangulation hazard of wearing a necklace.

9. Complicated wraps for baby wearing

Don't buy anything that needs a tutor, class or more than one person to put on. Just go with one baby wearing product. The already-mentioned easy, highly adjustable, works-for-mom-and-dad LILLEbaby.

10. Crib accessories

Some crib accessories like bumper pads can put baby at risk.

Other accessories to avoid include those light up, large, plastic things that play lullabies and have colorful visuals and usually attach to the side of a crib. Remember that whatever becomes part of your baby's going-to-sleep ritual must be repeated every single night and nap, sometimes for years.

You really don't want anything that is so specific that it can't be easily replaced or repeated. You likely wouldn't travel with the light-up plastic thing, so I'd recommend skipping it if you want to travel easily with your baby.

11. Bottle/pacifier sterilizer.

Buy things that are dishwasher safe or clean them with hot soapy water and a specialized brush like the one recommended above. Over-sterilizing may rob your baby of a healthy microbiota.

12. Infant bath tub.

You don’t need a bathtub or special insert for your baby. They may make things a bit easier, but they may also increase the risk to your baby by adding a false sense of safety when your baby is in the bath. Use the kitchen or bathroom sink (sanitized first, of course) to bathe your baby. Never leave them unattended, even for a moment, and always keep their face out of the water. Use a cloth or wipes for cleaning the face. In the early days, babies do not need frequent baths, and can be wiped down with a warm, damp cloth. Once they can sit unaided, you can let your baby sit in a very shallow tub to bathe, or even take baths with them.

Bonus, babies getting sink baths are so sinkin’ cute. Seriously, I dare you to go search #sinkbath on Instagram. Bad day? It just got better.

13. And... everything else not on the above list of essentials.

That’s right, you don’t need special baby combs or brushes, breastfeeding pillows (which are remarkably similar to regular pillows), or any of the other 60,000 items in the Amazon baby store alone. Stick with the 25 essentials listed on the checklist above and you should have everything you need for your baby to thrive.

Here’s a quick summary of what to put on your registry (in image form):

Best Baby Registries of 2021

All perks and features of each baby registry are updated for 2021!

To find the best baby registries of the year, we sat down and discussed the baby registries with over a dozen moms, with combined experience having over 35 babies! We took notes, and they gave ratings for each registry. All of the parents had tried at least one registry, and provided us with thorough baby registry reviews, including Babylist, Target, Buy Buy Baby, Amazon, WalMart, Pottery Barn Kids, Ikea, Crate and Kids,, and some smaller registries such as Giggle and Magic Beans.

Below we tabulate all of the final results from our research. Note that we update this list every month, in response to changing terms and conditions of each registry, and in response to changing experiences in our community of parents. After our table of results, we give fuller reviews of the top-rated baby registries, using five primary criteria for selection: range of available items, competitive prices, fast shipping, easy returns, and overall customer service experience.

If you're wondering what to put on your baby registry in the first place, check out our baby registry checklist for some hints! If you have any questions or comments about our reviews of the best baby registries, find us on Facebook and leave a comment! We always appreciate reader feedback, and want to keep all of our reviews accurate and timely!

The Top 7 Baby Registries of 2021!

Winner: Baby Registry

best baby registry amazon

Everybody knows that has the largest selection of products on earth. Looking for full nursery sets? Got it. Gliders? Got em. Dressers, changing tables, cribs, toys, small appliances, books? No problem. You can add anything from a small set of receiving blankets to large furniture items, all at extremely competitive prices and with fast shipping (free if spending over $49, or if they have Amazon Prime, and who doesn't!?). Moms who used the Amazon baby registry loved that they could get anything under one roof, and didn't have to make several baby registries to cover all the different things they wanted. They also reported that Amazon customer service was excellent and the return or exchange process (within 365 days) was free and easy, and the gift giver does NOT find out that the gift was returned or exchanged (you can get Amazon credit to use toward other things). There are also a few other great features. First, Amazon uses what's called a universal baby registry, which means that you can add a button to your browser that will allow you to add products to your registry from any other website you might find. For instance, if you find something at Buy Buy Baby that you can't get at Amazon, you can add that item to your Amazon registry with a click of a button. Second, they offer a substantial completion discount of 10-15%. If you sign up for Amazon Prime you'll qualify for the full 15% discount; otherwise, you'll get the default 10% discount. The completion discount is eligible on remaining baby registry items within 60 days of the baby's due date (before it or after it), for up to $2000 worth of items (can be combined into one purchase, or divided into two purchases).

This can amount to hefty savings: with Amazon Prime, you'll get a $300 discount on purchases totaling up to $2000 of remaining registry items. Note that this discount doesn't apply to items added through the universal registry (i.e., added from different stores than Amazon). There is also usually a sweepstakes that you can enter for a chance to win your entire registry for free; obviously not a huge likelihood that you will win, but nice to have the chance. And they will send you a little welcome box with some product samples, usually like $30-35 worth of goodies. Amazon also has one of the most comprehensive and unbiased item review systems on the internet, with many products having thousands of candid user reviews, so you'll know what you're getting yourself into before deciding on an item. And of course, you might be able to find our own reviews of over 500 popular baby products (see our full list of reviews here). Overall, Amazon's baby registry is a clear winner of our best baby registry list for many reasons. Negatives? The moms who used Amazon's baby registry didn't report any major problems. One did note that not all items on Amazon are eligible for free 2-day Prime shipping, and sometimes it's nice to be able to visit the store to touch and see actual products rather than ordering only online (which I think is solved by the universal registry system, which allows you to add items from any store). First Runner-Up: Target Baby Registry

best baby registry target

According to our research, this is the second best baby registry option out there. It was a close second to Amazon, mostly because moms really appreciated that friends and families could buy online or in the store. They also could stop at a Target on the way to visit you (or on the way to your shower) to buy that last minute gift! So Target is definitely a good baby registry option if you have a lot of absent-minded friends and family members who need a convenient option. Target, just like Amazon, has a very wide range of products available for registries: they have the little things, like receiving blankets and towels, up to the larger things like dressers, changing tables, cribs, and gliders. Their range of options isn't anywhere near as wide as Amazon, their range of baby-specific options isn't as wide as Buy Buy Baby, and their reviews aren't as comprehensive as Amazon. Regarding selection, Target has recently started the "Add from Anywhere" which allows you to add items to your registry from other websites, which helps with some of the limited selection. But they do have fast shipping and your friends and family are likely familiar with Target and comfortable shopping there. In terms of negatives, if your friends and family buy baby registry items in-store, moms report that the return and exchange process (up to 365 days after purchase) is easy and fast, and the customer service folks are usually very easy to deal with. However, if the items are purchased online, some parents report difficulty with returns. We tried a few online purchases recently and didn't run into any issues with returns; there was an easy online return processing system, with easy prepaid label shipping. Like Amazon, Target also offers a completion discount of 15% off items remaining in your baby registry within 8 weeks of your due date. That discount is 5% higher than the basic Amazon discount (without signing up for Amazon Prime), and starts 2 weeks sooner than the Amazon discount. However, keep in mind that the Amazon prices on many items might actually be lower, and 2-day shipping is free with Amazon Prime, so the net cost might be similar. Also, Target sells many items online-only, which some moms report can make in-store returns difficult or impossible (though this is less of an issue with a pandemic!). Second Runner-Up: BuyBuy Baby Registry

best baby registry buybuy baby

Did you know that Buy Buy Baby is the baby version of Bed, Bath, & Beyond? You might be wondering why you should care. Well, you know those 20% off coupons you get in the mail but rarely use? You can use those at Buy Buy Baby, giving you a potential discount much larger than some of the other baby registry options (but this is only eligible for a single item). Don't get those coupons? Sign up here at Bed Bath and Beyond and they will send you a coupon via email the next day (they'll also send one to your house). Also, when you load the buybuyBaby registry page for the first time, it will usually prompt you to enter your email to get the 20% coupon right to your inbox. In our experience, Buy Buy Baby offers a slightly larger selection than BabyList, and tends to have excellent customer service (as do most registries on this list). Though gift wrapping is an added fee when using the website, Buy Buy Baby does provide free wrapping paper and tape in the store (and the stores are back open as of September 2020!) so you can wrap your own gift purchases. Of course, BuyBuy Baby doesn't have anywhere near as many locations as Target or Walmart, though most shopping is being done online nowadays given current world events. Their prices can run a bit higher than some other stores, thought they do price match with other sites or stores, so keep that in mind!

BuyBuy Baby does have a good completion discount (15%), and they will send it to you a couple weeks before your baby's due date. This is new - the BuyBuy Baby completion discount used to start on your due date, so this is a nice new perk. One common trick is to simply shift your due date earlier by a few weeks when you sign up, to give yourself more time to purchase some final things before your new family member arrives. They also recently updated their policy to include free shipping for items over $39 (used to be $99, then $49, and now $39). As of March 2021, BuyBuy Baby also includes a group gifting feature that allows several gift-givers to contribute a small portion of a relatively expensive gift. Moms report that the return process is easy, and customer service is generally excellent. The only real drawback is that this is not a universal registry, you are limited to the products available at buybuyBaby and Bed Bath & Beyond; of course, now that Babies R Us is gone, they have the largest in-store baby selection in the world! Third Runner-Up: Babylist Baby Registry

best baby registry babylist

This is the second year that the Babylist registry has made it onto our list, and we're excited by its selection, flexibility, discounts, shipping options, free gifts, and clever non-material gift options like dog sitting, baby sitting, and home-cooked meals. It's definitely one of the overall best baby registries available, and it takes a more personal approach to your needs, and we love that. Regarding selection, the Babylist website has direct access to hundreds of the most popular baby products, including the vast majority of products featured on our best-of lists. They even have some products you can't get on Amazon, like the Nuna Pipa and Nuna Rava car seats, which your friends and family can purchase directly from the Babylist website, and usually for the same price you find at the larger stores. If there's something you can't find on the Babylist website, you can access products from all the big box stores, and all the little ones, including Etsy and other Indie shops. This technically makes the selection one of the largest on our list. Regarding flexibility, you can add items from any store, big or small, to your registry, using the browser bookmark add-in (which was very easy to use!), or their Android/iPhone app. The majority of baby products available on the Babylist website have free returns within a 270-day window. But if you add products to your registry from other sites (e.g., Amazon, Buy Buy Baby, etc), you are bound to the return policies of those specific sites. Already registered at other sites? Babylist can easily link or transfer them to your account so they're all in one place! Like Buy Buy Baby, there is a 15% discount on remaining items available in the store, which is offered 60 days prior to Expected Arrival Date. The majority of baby products available on the Babylist website have free shipping over $45. But if you add products to your registry from other sites, you are bound to the shipping policies of those sites. This is store-specific; wherever the gift is purchased, that is the gift wrapping policy you are bound to. So it's unlikely, but you might luck out. There are some additional perks to the Babylist registry worth mentioning: The free Hello Baby Box welcome gift for qualified new registrants, the ability to add "help & favors" rather than just products - need babysitting, dog sitting, home-cooked meals? Put them on your registry! Want to start saving for college? Ask for gifts to your baby-to-be's college fund! Parents without paid parental leave also find the cash fund helpful to offset the strain of taking an unpaid leave. Also able to asked for hand-me-downs like books & clothing. Extensive resource and guide section, including sample registries and a lifestyle quiz to help you select what is best for your family. Their customer service is also great, and their "Happiness Heroes" are available via email, chat, and phone to help you build your registry and to help less tech-savvy gift givers make online purchases! Luke-warm Baby Registry: Walmart Registry

best baby registry walmart

Our experience with the Walmart baby registry was limited by their flexibility and discounts. The selection at Walmart is amazing, nearly as good as other large online retailers like Amazon, so you're likely to find most baby products you're interested in putting on your registry. And they have an awesome price-match guarantee so that you make sure you're getting a competitive price relative to most other online retailers, like Amazon or BabiesRUs. The list of stores they will price match with is available here. In the increasingly competitive landscape of online retailers, Walmart is second only to Amazon, but you wouldn't really know that based only on their registry. While it has some perks, like the price-matching, free returns within the 90-day window, and a welcome box of sample baby products (like they have at Babylist), they are also pretty limited. First, unlike every other baby registry we reviewed, Walmart does not offer any completion discount, so you won't get any discounts on remaining registry items as your due date approaches. Second, Walmart does not offer any gift wrapping options that we could find; we did figure out that you could set up a gift list outside of the registry and choose wrapping, but we couldn't figure out how to get registry gifts wrapped. Third, one of the biggest limitations is that they don't allow you to add products from other stores, only Walmart. So if it's not available on Walmart, then you're out of luck, unless you make more than one registry. The only sites that offer multi-store flexibility for their baby registries are Amazon, Target, and Babylist. So overall, we're only luke-warm on Walmart, and think there are better options out there. But if you're a die-hard Walmart customer, or you have a store very close to home, then it might be worth giving it a shot. To learn more about the Walmart registry, click here.

Crate & Kids (Crate & Barrel): Not so Hot

best baby registry crate and kids

This is a pretty high end baby registry that is perfect for parents looking for high quality nursery furniture (cribs, gliders, chairs, dressers, changing tables), personalized gifts (like embroidered dolls or cushy chairs), wooden toys like a rocking horse or wooden walker, or several other adorable toys and gifts. Crate and Kids is the boutique kids department that appears in about 50 different Crate and Barrel stores across the country. While there isn't a very big selection of baby gear, what they do sell is hand-selected, stylish, and high quality. Examples include patchwork activity mats and tummy time toys, Land of Nod chairs and bean bags, pull-behind wooden trains, and more. Toys and smaller gifts are usually in the range of about $50 to $200, and cribs range from $400 to $800. So definitely less expensive than Pottery Barn, and they have some of the major crib brands like Babyletto and Jenny Lind (both of which appear in our best cribs list). Crate and Kids is perfect for filling up your nursery with adorable and high quality products, all the way down to the rugs and artwork hanging on the wall. But they do not have all other baby gear you're probably looking for: no bottles, baby monitors, car seats, strollers, carriers, baby gates, or other things that appear in our best baby gear list. If you choose this baby registry you will likely need to get a second registry at another store; that's fine for many parents, but some find it to be a bit too much. In fact, many of the products we found at Crate and Kids are also available at Amazon, so keep that in mind. The Crate and Barrel baby registry does have some decent perks. First, for more expensive items like cribs, you can use the "group gifting" feature that allows several people to pitch in for a single gift. We really liked that feature! Second, the registry completion discount is 10% and you have up to 6 months after your baby arrives to use that discount on any (or all) remaining items in your registry. Third, there is free shipping, but only on orders over $99. Finally, we downloaded their app and found it pretty easy to use, both for adding products to the registry but also for tracking what has and has not been ordered. Cons? Well, it's pretty niche; while Crate and Kids has some awesome and adorable products that were designed by local artists and designers, and you can definitely find some awesome baby gear, you'll likely need to supplement with a secondary registry. Also, the completion discount isn't very high (10%, same as Pottery Barn), and the free shipping is only offered on orders over $99. Gift boxing (not wrapping) is $5.50, and they will include a note for you. With all that said, there are definitely some pros and cons here. While we think it wins out over Pottery Barn, we also think it's definitely not on par with some of the bigger options. To learn more about the Crate & Kids baby registry, click here.

Pottery Barn Kids: Not so Great

best baby registry pottery barn

Here's an option that is very highly reviewed by the relatively few moms who have actually used it. It's not that it's not a fantastic baby registry (it is), but rather that it tends have more expensive options than our other recommended baby registries, and some moms aren't comfortable asking their friends and family to spend $1300 on a dresser or $1000 on a glider. However, moms note that if your friends and family are comfortable with these relatively steep prices, the products are definitely very high quality. Pottery Barn Kids does a good job of keeping only options that are soft (blankets, swaddlers, sheets, etc), durable, and have very high customer satisfaction and low returns. In other words, the increased price might be worth it - and in this case, you typically get what you pay for. With Pottery Barn Kids you're paying for higher quality and usually cuter styling. Most moms agreed that Pottery Barn Kids has some of the cutest and most stylish baby registry options out there. So how does it compare in terms of features? Customers can buy online or in store, just like the others. Of course, there aren't as many Pottery Barn Kids stores out there as there are Target or Buy Buy Baby stores (which feel like they're in nearly every town), so it might not be quite as convenient for friends and family. They have a 10% completion discount for a 6 month period, but it only begins AFTER your baby's due date (not before it like the others). If you are having more than one baby (twins, or triplets!) they offer a 10% discount on multiple registry items (so if you ask for 2 of the same blanket, there's a discount). They also have an ongoing $1500 monthly drawing, and your name will be automatically entered into the drawing and you might win that amount towards your registry purchases. Of course, none of the 4 moms who used this registry actually won the monthly drawing, but you gotta be in it to win it, right? To learn more about the Pottery Barn Kids baby registry, click here.

Gone Baby Gone! The Babies R Us (BRU) Baby Registry No Longer Exists!

best baby registry

The BRU Registry is no longer operating, the registry was shut down along with the vast majority of their stores. Fortunately, one of the other baby registries is offering perks for people who might be interested in transfering their BRU registry to their site: As of early last year, Babylist was offering an extra $10 for people who want to transfer their registry to Babylist, which is a decent incentive. In our original review of the BRU registry, the moms we interviewed showed very high appreciation for it, and as many who recommended Amazon and Target also recommended BRU for the best baby registry of the year. Amazon won by a small margin, mostly because their selection and prices are unbeatable, they simply have far more options, and offer free 2-day shipping and free returns which moms noted are both "amazing" and "very reliable." To compete, BRU offered a ton of incentives for new baby registries. These included: endless earnings cash back, with 5% earnings on the first $300 of purchases, and 10% earnings purchases totaling over $300; and earnings were unlimited, and were given to you in the form of store credit. For instance, if your registry had purchases of $2000 total, you would get $185 in store credit that you could use to purchase almost anything at BRU (some exclusions apply, like gift cards, special orders, etc). They also had a completion discount program; you would receive a postcard in the mail about a month before your due date, and the card had a 10% discount code that you used to purchase remaining registry items. Not quite as high as the Amazon 15% discount completion program, and moms noted that it's annoying to wait for the postcard and have to do it manually (Amazon and Target automatically activate the discount once you hit a specific date). There were also some limitations to what is actually eligible for the completion discount: no diapers, formula, furniture, and a few other things. But BRU did offer the best return policy on our list: returns were accepted up to 1 year after purchase! Maybe that's one of the reasons they went out of business - a return window that long makes it difficult to predict revenue. But moms did report very little trouble returning things to the store or online. So there were a lot of positives here, making it a great option on our best baby registry list. There were also some more specific negatives: some items were online-only and not available in stores, and some items were the opposite. Online-only purchases returned through the mail get credited to the person who purchased the item (not to you!), so definitely return in-store for credit. In any event, the this registry is closed down, as have all of the stores already, and we expect more to close over the next few years. Fortunately, there are many other top rated baby registries to choose from!
