Not only did we lose Maddy’s very first homework packet over here in the chaos of the first few weeks of school; we also only spent only a fraction of the time we should have on her first spelling word list.

Needless to say, that first test wasn’t pretty, and Maddy really didn’t learn the words like she should have–or could have. So we’ve been trying new ways of tackling the spelling word beast over here.

This teachy-mama has done a little research and has come up with some very exciting Fun Ways to Learn Spelling Words for my sweet Maddy so that she doesn’t look at it as homework–she looks at it as fun.

So here’s what we found:

With spelling word flash cards:

  • Flash Cards: I’m a flash card fan–not to endlessly flip in front of a kid’s face–but to use in games, activities, and sneaky-learning ways. I’ve created flash cards for each of Maddy’s lists but I’ve also created a Blank Spelling List for those weeks I just can’t type one myself (or for anyone else to use). spelling list-blank sheet is here as a pdf.

  • Word Scramble: Scramble up the letters of each word and have student put them in the correct order.(Don’t forget to point out patterns and families!)

What are word sorts?

Instead of receiving a list of 15-20 spelling words, children receive a group of words in table format.  They cut them out and arrange them in columns according to pattern.  Here are some sample sorts, progressing from easy to hard:

  • sort the -at (cat) and -an (pan) word families
  • sort short vowel words that end in ck (-ick, -ack, -ock, -uck, -eck)
  • sort short a words (mat) , long a words spelled with a silent e (cake), and long a words spelled ai (rain)
  • sort the long i patterns: i-consonant-e (kite), igh (might), and i-consonant-consonant (mind)
  • sort words with diphthongs: oyoi, owou
  • sort words that have the ed ending: by doubling the final consonant (robbed), doing nothing (walked), or dropping an e (amazed)

The word sort is the heart of Word Study – without it, Word Study doesn’t exist.  Word sorts allow children to make generalizations about words which they can apply to new words as they read and write.  Instead of being passive learners, students are active: they are comparing, contrasting, and analyzing.

Where to find word sorts

You can find a list of word sorts (in order from easy to hard according to the levels of spelling development) at the back of Words Their Way.  You choose the list based on your students’ level of development (which we talked about in Part 3).  Then type up the sort yourself or purchase companion volumes which do the work for you.

One caveat: you are the judge as to what your students need to learn next.  If a group is struggling, add a review week.  If a list feels like too much too soon, save it for later.  That’s one of my favorite parts of Word Study: you are not a slave to a curriculum — you, who know your students best, choose what to teach – not a group of curriculum developers who’ve never met your spellers!

How to introduce a word sort

1. Once you’ve chosen your sort, you’ll decide how many words to include and type up the list in a table format.  As a teacher I made every list 20 words — even for my first graders. I felt that since the students were learning patterns and not simply memorizing 20 words, this was not unfair.  But there is nothing sacred about a 20-word list.

2. Have your students cut apart the words and save them in an envelope or bag.   Here’s the first word sort I taught my daughter. Since her spelling inventory told me that she’s at the beginning of the Within Word Pattern stage, I started with the first list in that stage.  In a classroom you’d want to prepare word lists for each group of instruction.  When I taught Word Study I would assign each group a letter (the lowest group would be Group A).  I would write “Group A” (or “Group B,” etc.) in the center box on the top of the table.

3. Introduce the pattern and assign header words.

Here’s how it might sound: “You know that the letter a makes different sounds.  Sometimes it makes the short a sound, and sometimes it makes a long sound.  We spell  words differently when the a makes different sounds.  Today we’re going to sort words that have short a and a-consonant-e.  You’ll also find some words that don’t follow either pattern.  We’ll call them our oddballs.   Here’s our first header word: hat.  Does that have a short or long a sound?  Where should we put it?  Here’s our other header: cape.  Can you tell me where this one will go?”

4. Guide your student to finish sorting the words herself.  Some students will need more guidance at the beginning, but let them go when they’re ready.  In my teaching I usually found that my students did not need me to do this initial step after several months of sorting.  They were able to discover the pattern themselves.

5. Have your students read the words aloud.  Focus on the sounds the words make.  At this point your speller may find that a word was sorted incorrectly.  At first my daughter did not catch the oddballs “what” and “have.”  But as she read the sort aloud I was able to show her that have does not make the sound you would expect — so it’s an oddball.  And what looks like it should be wat.  So that’s an oddball too!

6.Explain any unfamiliar words.  This list is pretty straightforward, but I might ask my daughter how any different meanings she can think of for “jack.”  As the lists progress in difficulty, there will be more challenging vocabulary.

7. Form generalizations.  In the case of the above sort, the generalization would sound something like this: “When you hear a short a sound, you spell it with just the letter a.  When you hear a long a sound, you put an e at the end of the word.”

 A more complicated generalization – which is above my daughter’s head – would sound like this: “When you hear a short a sound in a single syllable word, use just an a between the consonants.  When you hear a long a sound in a single syllable word, spell it a-consonant-e.”

A rule of thumb: Word generalizations according to what your students can understand.

8. Have your students shuffle and resort the words themselves.  Before I dismissed a student from a word study meeting, I required him to sort the words all by himself and read them aloud one last time.

9. Have your students record (or paste) the word sort into  a Word Study notebook.  I had each of my students copy the word lists into their spiral notebook. I checked for spelling errors, which they corrected.  Looking back, it might have been better to have first graders glue the words into the notebook at the beginning of the year.  Copying 20 words was a real chore for some of those little ones!  I chose the pasting option for my daughter.

Word sort activities

1) Teacher-directed closed sort (as described above): You define the categories, model the sort, and and then have your child complete it.  (This sort is for short a words and long a-consonant-e words.  I’m going to start with hat and cape.  My next word is glad.  It will go in the short a column under hat.  Can you finish the sort?)

2) Student-directed closed sort: As kids are ready, they create the categories and sort.  You check for accuracy.  (Can you tell me how you sorted?  That’s right – this week is short a words and long a words.  What do you notice about the long a words? Yes, they use a silent e at the end.  Tell me about your oddball words.)

3) Blind sort: A friend or parent reads each word to the child.  The child points to the column (on a clear desk or table) where each word should go.  Mistakes are addressed as they occur.

4) Writing Sort: Follow the same procedure as with a blind sort – but this time, students write each word in its appropriate column.  This is a good one to use toward the end of the week when preparing for the weekly test.

5) Speed Sort: Some students will enjoy using a stopwatch to time how quickly they can sort their words and work toward improvement as the week progresses.

6) Draw and Label / Cut and Paste: Young spellers are given drawing paper that has been divided into columns headed by a key letter.  They cut out pictures that begin with each letter and glue them into the appropriate column.  Some students may be able to draw the pictures instead.

7) Word Hunt: Sometimes I would assign a word hunt as homework.  Students would hunt through reading and writing, in books, on signs, etc. for additional examples of the sound or pattern they were studying.  They would write the words they found in the appropriate columns.

    Developmental Spelling Routine for 2nd Grade

    Have you been struggling through how to teach developmental spelling? Did you school adopt this method of instruction, and you’re feeling a little lost? Or does your school still teach whole group spelling lists, and you want to make a shift but don’t know how to organize things so it makes sense?

    Today I’m sharing the developmental spelling routine I used with my 2nd grade class. Following this rhythm made things so much simpler for my weekly teaching life, while also growing my students as spellers and writers. My data from the beginning of the year to the end of the year showed that keeping things neat, organized, and structured really helped things click for my students!

    How to Get Started with Developmental Spelling

    My experience with developmental spelling has always been Words their Way. So, everything I’m talking about in this post is based off of that experience. But, I know that there are other programs out there, and some reading curriculums now that differentiated spelling lists that you may opt to use. These steps will also work for other programs.

    The first thing that needs to be done is determine what your students’ developmental levels of spelling are. This decision is data-driven. If you use Words Their Way, there is a spelling assessment to give at the beginning of the year to determine groupings. Give the assessment, score them, and place students into groups.

    In second grade, the majority of your class will likely fall in the ‘within word’ spelling range. This is on level for this age group, so having a developmental spelling group below this range is approaching grade level, and scoring above within word is considered above grade level.

    Weekly Routines

    Monday

    We start the week with our new sorts. The kids walk in on Monday mornings with two copies of the sort lying on their desks. One copy goes straight into their backpack to take home and practice. The other gets cut and sorted on their desks during morning work. At this point, I haven’t taught the students their new patterns for the week, so they simply are sorting the words on their desks and trying to determine what patterns link the words together. After morning work time, they store the words in a plastic ziplock bag that I keep stapled into the front cover of their word work notebooks.

    During small group instruction that day, I pull spelling groups briefly before I dig into reading groups. These groups don’t always align, but sometimes they do. My lowest and highest spellers were sometimes in the same reading groups, so I could simply kick off their small group lesson with a quick intro to their sorts for the week. The middle-ground spellers were sometimes higher readers, so I may have to take a few minutes to pull those spelling groups independently of reading. This meant that on Mondays, my small group reading instruction was reserved for my lowest groups, while my highest groups may only get a spelling lesson that day.

    Tuesday

    My morning work on Tuesdays was always for students to pull their words out of their plastic bags, re-sort, and glue them into their notebooks in the correct groups. After they had finished that, they could use extra time to think of and add words that fit the same patterns to their lists.

    On Tuesday-Thursday during centers, students have word work in their weekly rotation. You can read about how I organize my center rotation HERE. The activities and manipulatives are the same throughout the year. I simply rotate them out to keep the novelty alive. This keeps them working with their words in different chunks throughout the week.

    Wednesday

    Morning work on Wednesdays is for students to write 10 sentences using different words on their list. The ‘words in context’ piece is important to me. The purpose of developmental spelling is of course for students to move through different tiers of understanding when it comes to word parts. So they aren’t simply memorizing spelling with no understanding of why spelling happens the way it does. That alone helps with retention. But using the words in sentences helps a lot, too!

    Thursday

    Morning work on Thursdays was for students to rainbow write their words in their notebooks. They liked this because of all of the different colors of markers and crayons they could use. But for me, it’s simply a repetition exercise. I wanted the rainbow writing to happen in the proper groupings, because the point of their lists is for them to notice the patterns.

    Friday

    Friday was spelling test day! We kicked off the reading block with the weekly reading test from our curriculum. I talk about this routine a bit in my grading post HERE. After all students were complete with the reading test, students would move into ‘center catch up’, and move on to an activity they did not finish that week.

    While students were spread out in their centers, I would call spelling groups to my small group table and administer the test. This was just done on looseleaf paper, and I would grade and instantly pass back for students to log in their data folders. This testing time took the place of small group instruction on this day.

    • Karaoke: That karaoke machine can double as a super-fun spelling machine if you turn it on and allow your child to spell her words into it!
    • Use Puzzlemaker: Have your child type in all of the week’s spelling words and then let her search for them using this cool resource from Discovery!
    • Use Let them Sing it: Type in a spelling word on this site, and the word is sung back to your student.(This one is bound to get giggles!)
    • Use Spelling City: Head over to Spelling City, have your child type in the spelling words, and then he can learn the words, play games with them, and be tested. This site is a gem!

    With space to run, jump, and play:

    • Chalkboard Race: Form two teams, with one player from each team holding a piece of chalk and standing at a designated spot about 10 feet from a chalkboard.Teacher calls out a word, and players run to the board and write the word correctly as quickly as possible. The winner finishes the word first and spells it correctly.
    • Ball Toss: Players stand in a circle with a Nerf ball or something else safe to toss.Teacher calls out a word, tosses the ball to a student, and that student spells the word.If the word isn’t spelled correctly, the student tosses the ball to another person who will try to spell it; if it is spelled correctly, the player tosses object to another student and teacher gives her a new word to spell.
    • Swing and Spell: Teacher gives the student a word to spell, and the student says a letter of the word with each back and forth movement of the swing, much like you can do when teaching syllables.
    • Run the Bases: Student starts at home plate, gets a word to spell and for every word correctly spelled gets to make a move around the bases, beginning with hitting the ball, then running from first base, second, third, and home.

    With anything and everything else:

    • Spelling Word Hunt: Look for those spelling list words in the newspaper or in another book, magazine, or text!Circle them or use a highlighter to highlight them.
    • Scrabble, Boggle: Use these cool game pieces to ‘build’ spelling words on the on a cookie tray, on the table, or on the floor.
    • Crazy Words: Put something ‘crazy’ (like jell-o mix, shaving cream, sand, or rice) on a cookie sheet, and have your child use his finger to ‘write’ spelling words on the tray.
    • Paint bag Writing: Put poster paint in a gallon-sized ziplock bag and seal it tightly! Then have your child use her fingertip to write the letters of each word on the paint bag.
    • Stamp It: Use alphabet letter stamps to ‘stamp’ the spelling words, first by looking at the words and then on your own!

    fun ways to learn spelling words  <div><h2>How to teach spelling words</h2><div><p>Most children begin to learn English spelling words and spelling rules in the first and second grades, at the same time as they are learning how to read and write. And while being able to spell is not necessarily a reflection of a child’s intelligence, it’s a skill that is important to master.</p><p>That’s because poor spelling habits will follow a student as they move into higher grades and their vocabulary grows. Misspelled words are distracting for teachers who are correcting assignments and can be embarrassing for adults who still make mistakes in professional communication.</p><p>More importantly, problems with spelling can alert teachers and parents to the presence of an un-diagnosed learning difficulty, such as dyslexia.</p><p>In a language in which there can be multiple ways to represent the same sound in writing, knowing the correct way to spell a word is not always evident. There are some general patterns that have enabled educators to write lists of rules.</p><p>However, there are also exceptions to these rules and plenty of notoriously hard to spell words. Adult learners who did not master spelling at a young age will have fossilized errors they need to unlearn. ELL students also have the difference between British and American spelling to consider.</p><p>For educators charged with introducing spelling words, explaining the rules, motivating learners and correcting a child’s early written work, teaching spelling may prove challenging. But with fun teaching strategies in place, spelling instruction is less tedious and can even be enjoyable, particularly when learners excel to the point of participating in whole school competitions and regional spelling bees.</p><h3>How do kids learn spelling?</h3><p>Kids learn how to spell in the first and second grades. Most early spelling words need to be memorized. This is particularly true of high frequency service words. Teachers will often group them in sets and provide weekly quizzes.</p><p>Rules will be explained and terms that follow the same rule may be taught together, to help learners recognize patterns. As students become stronger readers, they encounter familiar words more often. This helps them with spelling.</p><p>The more students use their words in writing activities, the greater the chances they will learn them by using the correct form, referencing it or making a mistake which they must later correct.</p><h3>Sound-letter mapping</h3><p>Children spend the first few years of life learning how to speak their native language. They acquire a certain amount of words in their vocabulary and then begin learning the alphabet and phonics.</p><p>In this way, they can identify the sounds words contain and match them to letters and letter combinations. These are essential pre-literacy skills that every child needs in order to start reading and writing.</p><p>As spelling involves sound-letter mapping, some words can be spelled by ear.</p><p>However, this requires learners to be able to hear every sound the word contains. Not everyone can do this. Children who have a hearing impairment, which often occurs in kids with Down syndrome, may struggle with spelling because they simply cannot pick out all of the sounds in a word.</p><p>Identifying phonemes is also a particular challenge for children with dyslexia.</p><h3>Dolch words</h3><p>Many early spelling words come from the Dolch list, a selection of terms that make up 50-75% of all of the text in children’s books and school materials.</p><p>Also called Sight Words, learning to recognize and spell these words makes it easier for kids to focus on harder and less frequent terms in reading and writing activities.     Tips for teaching spelling

    Let them get creative

    Break out the construction paper and markers. Alternatively, have students cut out letters from magazines and make a ransom note style collage of words. Learners might even create posters containing different illustrations of the words on their list. The more cognitive attention given to the task and the more fun they have, the more likely a word will be remembered.

    Write words out by hand

    Rote practice and memorization may be boring but they can do the trick when it comes to focus on form. Having students copy a word multiple times helps. However, if a student struggles with handwriting, such as is the case in dyspraxia and dysgraphia, it may be better to have them type the words on a computer.

    Encourage reading 

    The more learners see a word spelled correctly, the easier it is for them to transfer knowledge of form into long-term memory. Find stories that contain repeat examples of the words on your spelling list. You might even write up a worksheet and have kids underline or star the terms they recognize.

    Spell the word out loud

    Say words out loud and spell them out loud too. This encourages students to do the same. When kids spell out loud it helps them internalize the correct order of the letters using their ears as well as their eyes. This is also a good strategy for children who struggle with learning difficulties and helps in preparation for competitions like spelling bees.

    Keep words on display

    Put up as much print as you can manage in the classroom. Words that are in a child’s environment will be received as passive input, which over time will transfer to active knowledge.

    Play games to practice

    Crossword puzzles and worksheets are great for homework or quiet activities but getting the whole class involved in games such as hang-man, is even better. Why? Because students will be motivated to spell the word correctly in order to win. Delivering answers will also necessitate both written and spoken responses. Some games will also give them a chance to evaluate their fellow students’ responses and correct any misspelled words.

    Teach touch typing

    A great way to practice spelling is through a touch typing course. Students type and spell words over and over again until they learn how to reach the keys for letters they represent. It will give learners a chance to revise words they’ve already learned and log the spelling of new words, with the help of muscle memory in the fingers. A multi-sensory approach like TTRS’s will also help with grapheme-phoneme mapping and strengthen reading skills.     Explain mnemonics

    Some hard to spell words can be made easier for students if they use a mnemonic device to remember the spelling. This may entail inventing an anecdote where characters in the story stand for the letters in a word. A student may also want to use images that correspond to letters, to help them remember the spelling.

    Knowing how to recognize dyslexia

    It is crucial to catch learning difficulties early on to prevent a child from falling behind his or her peers and help kids reach their full potential in the classroom. Students with dyslexia may have a hard time spelling words their classmates find easy.

    They may reverse letters in handwriting activities or spell a word correctly one day and incorrectly the next. While spelling is impacted, dyslexia can also have serious implications for reading.     Students who struggle with spelling

    Having excellent spelling skills doesn’t necessarily mean a child is smarter than other kids. Nonetheless, learning good spelling habits from the start is important.

    For students who struggle with spelling, working through a touch typing course can be just the ticket to improving their skills and gaining self-confidence and motivation in the classroom. That’s because it can be done outside of class and won’t necessarily call extra attention to the problem, which can cause the student to be embarrassed in front of his or her peers.

    A modular course, like TTRS, is made up of individual units that students can repeat until they have learned the material. This gives learners the chance to overlearn spelling, which may be exactly what they need. They can also learn at a pace that is just right for them.

    No prep, no materials:

    • Spell and Eat: While making breakfast, lunch, or dinner, have your child spell a word, and after each word is spelled correctly, reward her with a small, healthy “treat” from your meal prep.
    • Examine the Word: Really look at the words, talking about the tough parts and analyzing patterns.Make up silly ways of remembering the ‘tough’ parts: ‘president’ has an ‘I’ in the middle because one day I’ll be president, OR ‘setting’ has two t’s in the middle just like two tall trees in a fairyland forest.

    Not only did we lose Maddy’s very first homework packet over here in the chaos of the first few weeks of school; we also only spent only a fraction of the time we should have on her first spelling word list.

    Needless to say, that first test wasn’t pretty, and Maddy really didn’t learn the words like she should have–or could have. So we’ve been trying new ways of tackling the spelling word beast over here.

    This teachy-mama has done a little research and has come up with some very exciting Fun Ways to Learn Spelling Words for my sweet Maddy so that she doesn’t look at it as homework–she looks at it as fun.

    So here’s what we found:

    With spelling word flash cards:

    • Flash Cards: I’m a flash card fan–not to endlessly flip in front of a kid’s face–but to use in games, activities, and sneaky-learning ways. I’ve created flash cards for each of Maddy’s lists but I’ve also created a Blank Spelling List for those weeks I just can’t type one myself (or for anyone else to use). spelling list-blank sheet is here as a pdf.
